Dixie takes on a snake :(
« on: March 18, 2006, 10:45:21 am »
This girl is going to give me a heart attack yet!  When we went on our afternoon walk today Dixie found a water moccasin by the lake.  She is always out front, I am in the middle, and Sugar Bear in back when we walk the fence line of our property.  Well as soon as she gets on the dam over the south end of the lake she start barking like crazy, some times it is a cat or a turtle so I walk over to check it out.  Dixie growls at me so I stop a few feet away.  I look down at Dixie's paws and there is about a 2 1/2 foot snake.  I try to call her away and all she will do is stand there and bark at it.  I rush Sugar Bear in to our shop so he is out of the way and then I run up the hill to get the hubby to get a gun and kill the snake.  I know some people love snakes but after the loss of Rosie they make my blood run cold.  So as soon as Dixie knows that Daddy is there she runs to check on me since I can can not get my breath from running up to the house.  Anyway hubby kills the snake and Dixie runs around like she is 10 foot tall and so very proud of herself.  I keep checking every inch of her body to make sure it did not strike her anywhere.  They both just got a big bully stick; after all she did save me from a snake.

I am thinking of changing her name to steel magnolia!

That is two this week, one on the dam and one in the back yard.  I am starting to hate the lake!  Hubby is back to doing "snake watch" two time a day!  He wont let me have a gun, something about me shotting myself. ;)

Lisa

Holy crap! Another one?????

ACK!! Dang, what about a little 410 for you? They have no kick and not very noisy compared to a 12 gauge.

These are great little guns, I don't know if this is the model or not, but they make one that folds up and you can put it in a tackle box.

Dixie's just doing what she was born to do, protect her momma :)

You need to get yourself a Mongoose.  And call it Riki Tiki Tavi.

Hahahah! That is great!! I love it, just let the mongoose out before the dogs!

Oh my!  Snakes scare the snot out of me but poisonous ones would probably kill me!  How horrifying to have to leave her there to go get help!  Oy!  I too love the 410.  We have one that is so easy to use.  That is MY gun!  I know which safe it is in, where to grab it quick and the ammo is right beside it.  No kick, easy to use, does what needs to be done when my puppers are in danger from the deadly woodchucks we have here.  Ok, maybe not deadly but they sure can bite and leave nasty cuts if the chuck is too big for the dumb Labrador to tackle easily!  Dixie rules!  She saved mommy's life!  If you do decide to get a gun, make sure you practice with it for safety's sake  ;)

That's it!  I'm hatching you out your very own set of guineas!!!  I can't believe you found yet another snake.  Thank heavens you are alright and Dixie is fine.  The 2 of you are going to give me grey hair yet...

Dixie is turning mine hair grey fast.  Yes my girl takes care of Mommy and Sugar Bear. Sugar Bear did not have a clue as to what was going on. I do think I am going to give the 410 a try!  Then maybe a set of guineas!
