What next??? Poor Hubby!!
« on: November 15, 2005, 07:01:34 pm »
My husband called me this morning from Gary, Indiana to let me know that he broke his leg last night.

He's been training with Swift Transportation (18 wheeler flat beds) and was filling the truck up with gas, he ran around to swipe his card in the pump, then was running back to monitor the tank and he tripped over the hose and fractured his leg.

His mentor took him to the ER and they said he needs to see a bone specialist so Swift put him in a hotel and evidently forgot about him now. He said he's been there all day with no pain medication and he hasn't eaten since yesterday afternoon. He has $5.00 in his pocket. I told him to charge some food to his room and we'll worry about that later and call the hospital immediately to see if someone can send a courier over with the pain meds. He sounds horrible. I can tell he's in excruciating pain just by talking to him and he's usually a pretty tough guy.

he doesn't even know how he's going to get back to Louisiana. He's afraid they're going to put him on a bus and make him ride 15 hours home in that cramped space with a fractured leg.

If I can find a way to get him to Chicago, I'll put him on the Amtrak. I think he'd have more leg room there. Anyone live near Gary?

I'm so worried about him!

Really, do you know where the Trump hotel is? I don't suppose you'd be willing to help get him his medication???

Poor guy. I hope he is able to get all of his medication and get home safetly and soundly...

The company won't help him out with the meds and stuff? Have you tried calling the concierge at the hotel and explaning the situation? They might have an errand service that would get it.

I told my husband that and offered to call the hotel myself because he is telephone impaired, but he said he was going to do it. I hope he does. He's a very stubborn German.

They've just LEFT him there?

That's not acceptable.

You need to get the number for Swift, and you need to call your family doctor.  Then your family doctor needs to call Swift and tell them that he's calling to find out what's happening with his patient, who he's just been informed has a broken leg.

It would be even better if you know any attorneys to have THEM call up and ask what's happening about his on the job broken leg, too.

If his leg is in need of a specialist, rather than a cast?  There are all KINDS of potential complications.  Maybe I'm an alarmist, but I paid for my college education working as a hospital file clerk, and I've seen a lot of files with a lot of complications that wouldn't have happened had someone been seen in a timely fashion.

Start harrassing people.  This is a Workman's Comp injury, and everything should be covered by Swift's insurance--and if they're going to let him sit there in the hotel without treatment or painkillers, I think that reasonably should include your husbands per diem costs.

Ugh, that is so horrible!  And please, please don't take this the wrong way, but Swift isn't known for being a great company in general.  I know firsthand - one of their drivers wasn't paying attention one day and drove into my ex-husband's truck going about 25 miles an hour.  My ex was stopped in traffic because there was construction and the truck hit him, setting of a chain reaction involving six cars.  And the driver admitted that he just wasn't paying attention.  A long and difficult legal battle ensued.
God help me to be the person my dog thinks I am.

Wow! Thanks so much everyone for your support and advice. I'm going to call our family dr. first thing tomorrow morning and see if he'll call the work comp. division.

They did tell him to go down to the restaurant and charge the food to the room. They were apologetic about leaving him there and couldn't figure out why they did that when originally he was going to complete the run to South Carolina with his mentor then catch a ride home with another driver.

He STILL doesn't have any pain meds, though and they want to send him home on the BUS!! I suggested Amtrak and it looked at first like they were going to go ahead and send him home that way, but they say they can't do it 'cause they don't have an account with Amtrak. I told Johann to tell them I will pay for the Amtrak ticket if they can get him to Chicago. There's NO WAY I'm going to let him ride from Indiana to Louisiana on a bus. That will take about 3 days where the train will take one and has more leg room and more comfortable seats.

My stomach has been in knots all evening over this and I have to testify in court tomorrow so I'm going to be a nervous wreck all day. I'll check in as often as I can. I need you guys.

Thanks, Tina - and thanks Devon, too. I'll let you know the latest as soon as I do (and can get to a computer).

Oh my!  That sounds horrible.  I hope he recovers fast.  I don't live near Gary, IN...I'm too far north into MI to be much help...but I would gladly do something if you need me to.
