Hip displacia? Please.....Say it aint so!
« on: October 23, 2005, 09:00:19 am »
Has anyone had a problem with their Newf's rear knees popping out to the sides.  I keep hoping that it's the rate in which he's growing.  I fear it may be hip displacia.  I will be taking him to get X-rays soon.  I really don't want to take away his manhood "If you know what I mean", but if it's hip displacia, I'll have no choice.  Please tell me this is nothing to worry about!

His legs only do this in a slow walk, never jogging or running.

Thanks

It sounds like he may have bad knees.  Get them checked out ASAP!  I had a Landseer with severe dysplasia and he couldn't walk because his femur would slip away from the hip.  But I did have a female with torn ACL's and she wouldn't put any weight  on them.  I haven't heard of knees popping out to the sides.  I really think you should get to a GOOD orthopedist who knows giant breeds as soon as you can!  We have our fingers and paws crossed for you!!!

He shouldn't be jogging or running on hard surfaces for a year, to avoid any injury to those soft, growing bones.

Let us know what happens!  It is scary, but hopefully it's something easy to fix!

Oh no! Please get him checked out and let us know what happens. If his knees are popping outwards in a walk then that doesn't sound very good.  :( Newfy hugs and kisses are being sent your way!

I'm confused as to why you would "take away his manhood" if he has dysplasia?  I know you wouldn't want to breed a dog with dysplasia but is there a reason to neuter at a very young age if dysplasia is evident?

Just curious Landseer, but is this at the Hocks? And is it perhaps on the left hock?

Just wondering, I'm seeing this more often, and Bava does this on occasion?
