Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Leash Training
« on: May 06, 2006, 09:01:01 am »
So we've had Black Jack for 1w now and he's an absolute doll. A little rough on the nipping, but it's getting better.
He's used to wearing his buckle collar, so how do I go about leash training.
I had one on him for about 30min the other day, just letting him drag it around. He spent most of his time chewing it and did a good job at ripping part way through it.
Is 7w too young to be starting leash training?
Do I just continue putting the leash on and letting it drag around?
Any advise would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Thanks for the warm welcome.
They did see the mom and she was a saint, but not sure if she was mixed or pure bred.
He weighed 7.3lb as of Friday.  He is officially 6 weeks today (Sunday).  His mom was 110lb, so we're guessing (and what a guess it is) he'll be in the 50-75lb range.
If free feeding, do you just put 1c+ in the bowl and moisten and leave?
He was the runt of the litter.  We only met one of his siblings and he looked like his dad was a shepard and his paws were twice the size of Black Jack's.
I really want a Newf someday, but they are few and far between here in Alberta.
Here's a few more pics  ;D

Just introducing myself as we finally have a puppy to ask tons of questions about etc.
His name is Black Jack and he's 6w old.  He's St. Bernard/Border Collie. At least that's the shelter's best guess.
He's a sweet heart (of course which puppy isn't?).
We are feeding him Purina pro-plan currently.  I feed him 1/4c with ~1/4c water 5 times a day.  Is this too much? He wolfs it down everytime I feed him.
The shelter said we should free feed, but I thought that wasn't good for animals?
Your thoughts??  I look forward to learning a lot.

Thanks for all your help.
We have a home visit tonight and then if all goes well, this is the tricky part as we ned to fence in one side of our yard-we might get to meet her tomorrow.
Thanks again!

Hi there-
I haven't posted much as I've been busy searching for the 'perfect' dog and I think I may have found her.
I'm curious to get your input as to what kind of mix you think she is.  The rescue society where she is currently says she's ~3m old, weighs about 25lb (but she's thin), and says her coat appears to be non-shedding which would suggest standard poodle.
When I first saw that tongue- I instantly thought Newf.  What do you all think?
Thanks in advance  ;)

If I lived anywhere near KS, I'd get him in a heartbeat.

Great Pyrenees Discussions / Re: Is this real or a joke?

Hi there-
My name is Mel and I am searching for our first family dog.
Along these lines, I saw someone advertising Dwarf Great Pyrenees pups. I had never heard of them and started searching for information. I contacted Peggy Walker and she says she would never pay for a dwarf (the breeder is asking $350Cdn).
Has anyone ever owned/seen a dwarf pup?
Are there any specific health problems that a dwarf would be prone to?
Your thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Mel
