Groans, Gripes, Brags & Boasts / VENT about stupid people
« on: March 09, 2006, 08:26:58 am »
So I dropped my daughter off to school and was on my way to work when the a**%^&e in front of me hits a cat.  Ok, its not like he couldn't have seen the cat because it was RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIS CAR.  Sorry, I'm so angry right now.  Don't read this part if you don't want to be upset.  The guy only ran over the cat's head so the cat was flipping out in the middle of the road.  The f-ing guy kept going!!!!!!!  Didn't stop or anything.  So I'm stopped in front of the cat trying to decide what I should do.  Should I get out and try and move the cat and really upset myself by seeing the damage done, or do I follow the moron who did it??  You guessed it, I followed the moron.  All the way to the local high school.  Turns out he's like 900 yrs old.  Said he didn't see the cat.  Ok, the cat was in front of him!!  What if it was a child?  I ream the guy up one side and down the other.  He kept saying sorry but it just didnt' seem like it was sorry enough.  Told him the poor cat was in the road dying and he kept going.  He said he didn't feel a bump.  Um, is it me or should this guy not be on the road??????  >:( >:(  I'm fuming.  So I finally leave and call a friend to get the number for animal control so this poor cat doesn't have to have anything more done to him.  I spent the whole ride to work trying hard to not cry but it didn't quite work.  :'( Ok, I'm done now.

Big Dogs with Jobs / Therapy Dogs
« on: March 07, 2006, 11:16:56 am »
After much talk with my parents, Boo's trainer and new trainer-to-be and some observation of Boo, I think I've decided to see if Boo would be a good therapy dog.  But, that being said, I don't know the first thing about going into this.  Anyone whose dog is a therapy dog, any advice would be greatly appreciated.  She's still really young (8 1/2 months old), but is there anything I can do now to start steering her in that direction?  She starts intermediate obedience next week.  She loves meeting new people (ok, maybe a little bit too much  ;D) and people are always coming over to her and saying that there is just "something about her" that makes them want to approach her.  Any ideas?

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / WOO-HOO!!!! Boo graduated!!!!!!!
« on: February 12, 2006, 11:42:00 am »
So, my baby girl is an obedience class graduate!  I know that doesn't seem like a big deal, but she was the only deaf dog in a class full of hearing dogs and she did great!!The only move she had trouble with was the "leave it" command but that might have something to do with the fact that all the other dogs had left their treats on the floor and she's incredibly food motivated.  Sooo.....she ate all theirs.  Oops.  But she did great with her sit/down/stay/wait and come command.  The trainer also threw in a curve ball by having the dogs run to their owners while all the other dogs/people stood in a line with food.  She had to run right past them and not stop and come to me and she actually did it.  Didn't pay attention to anyone but mommy!!!  Which is way better than at home when she turns her head and plays the "if I don't see mommy, she can't give me a sign and I don't have to do it" game.  Of course I had my mom take pictures too!  The first is in the ring doing the sit/down/sit command.  Next is all of us getting instruction on having to hold out treats to see if the dogs will stop or go right to their people.  3rd one is the trainer holding Boo before she took off like a rocket heading right for me and ignoring the other dogs/people.  Then is my pretty girl with her graduation hat on (sort of) ;D

I posted before about Boo's anal gland "issues".  Well, she went to the vet a couple of weeks ago and he expressed them, said they were overflowing and to come back for a follow-up.  We did that last night and the vet said that they were a little full again but not as bad as last time.  So, here comes the decision part.  I need to either have them removed or express them once a month (at least).  The way her glands are set, they're too far in for a bowel movement to clean them out so they're going to have to be manually cleaned out.  Now, I'm going to readily admit I'm a HUGE wuss and just wouldn't be able to do it, so I would take her to the vet and pay the $10 a month and have them do it.  But at the same time I feel guilty about doing that to her once a month because when they did it last night, she struggled and looked soooo unhappy.  The vet would also refer us to someone else because he doesn't do that surgery.  I'm really upset because I have no idea what to do.  :-\ There is the possibility that the surgery will leave her stool incontinent, although her vet said he's never personally seen that happen.  So I'm asking you guys for help.  What do you think I should do? ???

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Boo graduates on Saturday!!!!!
« on: February 05, 2006, 12:42:27 pm »
Oh I'm so nervous!  Boo graduates her obedience class on Saturday!  The trainer said she's done really well, but the "final exam" is a timed trial for the dogs and owners.  The only good thing is that with her being deaf, she won't be distracted by all the other noise going on.  The trainer said we could bring friends and family to watch.  She's the big dog in the class that consists of a golden retriever, min pin, 2 min pin mixes and a corgi!!!  I'm so used to her size now that all the other dogs look sooooo tiny!  ;D  I hope we do well!!!!

Great Dane Pictures / Don't squeeze the Charmin!!!!!
« on: February 02, 2006, 10:19:45 am »
Every morning I bring Boo with me into the bathroom so I can take a shower and she doesn't cause some sort of chaos in the house just roaming around.  Usually she's pretty quiet because she's just woken up and likes to just lounge around.  Monday apparently was a new day and a time to try something new!  I'm in the shower when I suddenly hear "snuffle, snuffle, snuffle  thunk"  "snuffle, snuffle, snuffle   thunk".  This happens a couple of times and I figure she's flipping the toilet lid up and down, which in itself is new.  She's strictly a bathroom sink faucet drinker so I couldn't quite figure it out.  Well, when I got out of the shower I realized what she was doing.  She wasn't trying to drink out of the toilet, she was trying to hide the evidence of what she had been doing  :o  Needless to say, I don't think Mr. Whipple would have been very proud of Boo.

Great Dane Discussions / Dane in Albany, NY rescue
« on: January 22, 2006, 11:28:41 am »
I took Boo to a local pet store in my area this Saturday and what did I find to my surprise but a local rescue group there with a young female Great Dane.  She's fawn and really underweight.  Supposedly she's one or two years old and is only as big as Boo who is almost 7 months.  She was really good and playful but according to the guy there, she'd been abused and has separation anxiety and should go to a home with another dog.  If anyone is looking for another Dane the link is [www.homewardbounddogrescue.com]  I really would have like to have taken her home right then and there, but Boo is in the adolescent puppy stage and this Dane may need something a little more low-key.

Someone sent me an e-mail with the address of a website that you can type in your address and it will show you all the sex offenders in the area, even breaking them down by whether or not the offense was against a child.  Its familywatchdog .us.  I found 19 sexual offenders just in the area of my daughter's elementary school.   >:(  Its scary but I'm glad I know now.

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Ugh.....anal sacs
« on: January 11, 2006, 11:01:48 am »
Ok, so Boo woke up in the middle of the night last night and I let her in bed with me.  About 3am she decided she didn't have enough of the bed and stretched out so I was left with a whole 1/2 inch square of room, but when she moved, I got a whiff of this horrendous odor, something between poop, landfill, 2 week old roadkill with a sprinkling of tuna fish juice.  UGH!!!!!!!  I realized she had been kind enough to emtpy an anal sac.  Needless to say, I rolled over the other way on my 1/2 inch square, buried my head in the pillow and tried to make my eyes stop watering.  I'm now convinced if the US had filled bombs with anal sac juice, there wasn't a war that couldn't have been won in two days.  Please tell me dogs doing this is a normal thing, or should I take her to the vet?  ???  I swear I smell like it now at work.  :-\

Great Dane Pictures / Further Proof
« on: January 04, 2006, 11:04:07 am »
Just further proof that a Dane will sit where ever he or she wants!!  The chair just happens to be my daughter's that goes to her little art desk.  And when someone happens to be in "your" chair, just sit on them.  Maybe no one will notice!!!  Of course the last picture is her trying to sneak up on my grandmother.  With those sad eyes she thinks she can get away with anything!!!!

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Good comeback
« on: January 02, 2006, 12:47:15 pm »
Does anyone have a good comeback for "You got a saddle for that thing?"  Sorry but the comment is driving me nuts.  Most times I just smile and say "no, she's not big enough yet."  :P

Food Discussion & Information / Change in Dog Food??
« on: December 29, 2005, 12:59:15 pm »
Boo is currently on the Blue Buffalo Adult Formula Lamb and Brown Rice food but I'm thinking of changing her to the Natura Innova Large Breed Puppy food.  Any thoughts on either brand good or bad??  ???  I don't know if this helps but her poops have been kinda soft for a little while (although this may be from her constant rawhide chewing)!

Great Dane Discussions / Ok, I think I should be offended???
« on: December 20, 2005, 10:56:16 am »
I'm fairly new here and want to get an opinion on something a friend said to me recently about my Dane.  We were outside and he looks at her and said "You never should have named her Boo.  Her name should be Special Olympics".  So I'm blonde and it took me a minute to realize what he said.   ???  I looked at him and said "My dog is NOT retarded!!!"  Even though I realize she has huge paws, and legs that go all over the place and big drooly jowls, I love her to death even in her clumsiness.  She regularly runs into walls and falls off the couch, but I just assumed it was her being a goof.  Please tell me all Danes are like this!!!!  And yeah, it is really funny when she runs :D  Yeah, the more I think about it, the more I think I'm offended!!!

Food Discussion & Information / Help with Dane food
« on: December 15, 2005, 03:16:03 pm »
Hi, I'm new to Big Paws and was hoping I could get some advice on the food I'm feeding to my 5 1/2 month old Dane.  She came to us on Purina One Puppy Chow and changed her food recently over a two week period.  She is now on Blue Buffalo Adult Dog food twice a day and was hoping someone could let me know if thats a good food for her.  She seems to love it, although she's pooping 4 times a day now, and boy are they BIG!!  She's healthy and playful but she's also deaf.  We're teaching her sign language and she's in obedience class with a wonderful instructor who knows sign language also.  So, any ideas on her food?  I've read Danes do really well on the BARF diet, but what about straight dry food?
