small dogs?
« on: August 13, 2005, 09:56:50 pm »
I know this is a big dog board but I need a little advice. A friend of mine wants to give away her Chi, now I know I don't need another dog and I surly cant feed another big dog but this one is just a 2 pound furball.  I told her that I'd see how she got along with my gang and let her know. Does anyone have any experince with Danes and Chi's? Is it a good idea or should I just let her find her a new home? I love my big dogs but I do miss when I could carry them around and cuddle with them. I also think it be so cute to walk the Three Danes and the little tiny Chi. I'm worried that they will try to eat her. Or mayber play too rough and hurt her. I know my Hershie loves puppies and small dogs and will protect her if they do get too rough but then there might be a huge fight between him and the Danes. I could go on and on about my worries and what if's but someone let me know.

my dogs haven't been around a small dog in a while and then Toester chased in everytime it ran. They love chasing the rabbits in the yard and when they catch them they kill them. She didnt hurt the little Min Pin at the dog park but she tried to pounce on it, thank god he was too fast.

Tulsa just got her butt kicked by a 20 lb, French Bulldog! She could have grabbed and shook and provided another Vietnamese Menu Item. But she was a lady, and came to me for guidance. By the end of the walk, all were friends. Training and socialisation are of utmost importance.
Big dogs know their place, little dogs have to protect themselves.
Big dogs have to be the leaders to show the little dogs the "Way"
Why can't we just be friends?

I'd like to think that all my dogs are well socialized. When they were pups I took them everywhere and had them exposed to all kinds of things. Even though you cant tell it now all of them except Thor have been to obedience class and played with other pups. We go to the dog parks, the pond and we do Great Dane meet ups. So I guess maybe we'll be okay?

Tulsas' Dad so are you telling me that its the Danes I should be worried about and not the Chi? ;D

I used to babysit for two mini chis full time at my home & still do on occasion...Sam son is fine with them but they can be really horrid to Samson...You do have to keep an eye out though that your big dog doesn't play too rough with the little dog but in my experience they really hold their own quite well!

The big dogs know their place, the little dogs establish their place among the dogs, it doesn't matter the size of the dog, what matters is the size of the heart in the dog.
Our canine friends look to us for guidance and protection, regardless of their size. We have to be consistent  in how we reflect this love, and how we distribute it. A lot of love goes along way, whether it be toward a big dog, or a small dog. They are not aware of their size, but of the size of love they are given.

I don't own any small dogs, but at the dog park, Gunther gravitates towards the small ones.  He plays differently with them and is much more gentle than he is with the larger dogs.  Although we don't get many toy breeds there, he did play with a very small shiba inu, and his best friends area  trio of basset hounds and a mini aussie.

Here's a pic of his first meeting with a toy poodle pup.

Caption should be: Anybody got Hot Sauce?
Just kidding, this is what I mean about our kids knowing their responsibiliti es.
Wish I'd had the same insight raising my 2 legged kids!

Lucys best friend in the world is Mutt, a 22lb Terrier mix. We also have a friend that raises Chihuahuas, all the dogs play together really well. As to other animal friends, Lucy's never killed anything. She's chased a lot of squirrels, stepped on a few, still didn't catch them. I'm afraid in the wild the Big Girl would've been reduced to vegetarianism.

Included are some pics of Lucy with Skip a friend we used to watch occaisionally for his family

I have a Dane and a 2 lb Chihuahua. My dane was raised with my Chi, so Grey was around Diesel from day one. I have no problems with anyone not getting along. Diesel will play with both of my Big Dogs, and when my Big Dogs play with each other Diesel will hide out of their way. When I let the boys inside, they always let Diesel in first, they come running to the door then stop and let Disel in. You can have danes and Chihuahuas but you have to be careful. It was real easy on me cause Grey always had a small dog around.
