Rottweiler Discussions / Re: Loki & my 6 year old grandson
« on: May 31, 2005, 12:12:20 pm »
My dogs chase and tackle kids too.  I have been working with them to break the habit but it hards for them not to chase something that is running from them.  Whenever the neighbors come over to play I put the dogs away.  But also don't let the neighbors come everyday.  Somedays it is dog days and the dogs get the yard.  Is there anyway to have days where only Loki can be outside, like it is her turn.  Or you can get a run and put your grandson in that to play. 8)

I have a trick for getting the puppy not to run from you.  Get her attention then run from her, taunt her, and act happy.  It works everytime with my guys and I can usually pick up what they had where they dropped or snag them so I can take it.  You look just as stupid running from them as after them.  Good luck and I hope it works for you.  :P

I'm not an expert I just volunteer.  I am definately not a trainer.  check out www.circletail .org, there is some contact information on there that will put you in contact with Marlys.  She can tell you anything you want to know and probably direct you some groups in your area.

I wasn't allowed to volunteer or adopt from Mastiff Rescue because I have an unspayed female.  I even offered to transport and they said 'NO'.  I understand that they don't want any accidental litters but if they only adopt out nuetered animals, then there isn't a problem.  I can understand their view but I was also hurt because I tried to help rescue animals since I plan on breeding Maia.  Trying to do the right thing isn't always the most respected thing to do. :-\

Both my dogs sleep on their stomachs and backs like frogs.  Both have good hips as far as I know.  I have heard that laying like that indicates good hips. ???

Being trained by the inmates is only the basics, at least at circletail.org .  The dogs are trained by professional but the inmates enforce the training.  The good thing about inmates is that they have the time and energy to give each dog individual attention and focus.  The 'real' trainers work with the inmates and their dogs one day a week.  Each dog is brought home to CT monthly and evaluated and sometimes put back in prison for more trianing or sent to a foster home for socialization.  There have only been 2 issues in the 7 or so years CT has been going.

It takes a special dog to be able to sense Seizure Disorder and Parkinson's being in prison allows the inmate to observe the dog and report back to the trainer.  This allows the trainer to focus on the dogs who actually have the potential to do it.

When, my Newf mix, Rocco was a little guy, probably 12-14 weeks old he had issues.  It turned out that his little pink thing (don't know what it is technically called) was stuck in him.  It had gotten an infection and crusted in there.  After going to 3 different vets, the third one finally soaked his penus and then worked it out and cleaned it up.  It was a little painful but he stopped chewing on himself and he started peeing outside instead of dripping everywhere in my house.

Random issue but it might be what is up.

Food Discussion & Information / Re: Raised water and food or not?
« on: May 27, 2005, 09:15:49 am »
I love my raised dish, I think it looks better, it was handmade by my ex.  It also relieves my back becaue I don't have to bend over.  I also don't have to look for the bowl since they can't carry it off.  The bowls don't move while they eat, I don't trip over it.  I have nothing but good to say about raised feeders.  But I think it is like anything else, it is up to your opinion and preference.  I haven't had my guys get bloat but I try to follow all of the other guidelines too.

I'll take a picture so you guys can see this raised feeder I am so in love with.  I'm pathetic, I know.

Your dogs are very photogenic.  I can't seem to get one good picture even when I take 100 pictures.  Then I fall in love with that one picture and no other picture is good enough.

Both of mine are morning dogs, though they are more than willing to go back to sleep after going out and having breakfast.

Rocco, Newf mix  male will be three in August.
Maia, OEM, was 1 on May 12th.
Soft toys or toys with squeakers only last a few days.  They are well loved for those few days though.  I get toys by the box load from Petedge.com, they are cheap.
