Old English Mastiff Discussions / Re: American Mastiffs

Flying w used to breed both kinds, but stopped breeding OEM to focus on American Mastiffs.
If I can figure out how to upload Maia's pedigree I will share it.

What do you guys know about American Mastiffs?  I have Flying W farms in my OEM pedigree.  I joined some yahoo boards and many people on there are very negative about Flying W.  It is said (I don't agree) that the owner is breeding mutts.  I understand that to create a new breed you must breed two different breeds together.  I am kinda skeptical of doodles so I don't really know where to stand on American Mastiffs. :-\

I avoid the dog park.  Maia barks at other dogs who are playing and jumps around like an idoit.  She means no harm that is just what she does to get them to include her.  Rocco jumps over smaller dogs back and forth and occasionly he has kicked another dog on accident.  I can see that smaller dogs would get hurt, not mortally wounded, if he accidently stepped on them so I stop him from doing this if I can catch him.

Rocco does not back away from another male if the male snarls at him which has caused two fights.  No broken skin on the other dog, just a lot of wet dog fur, but Rocco has walked away bleeding both times and guess who got blamed for the fight.  My dog because he was bigger and reacted to a dog in his face snarling.  Luckily Rocco is good with verbal commands and I know how to break up a dog fight without getting hurt by grabbing my dog by his hind legs toward the groin area squeezing and pulling him back toward my side.  Rocco didn't go after either dog again once I got him, he avoided them but both owners yelled at me and I am easy to cry when I get yelled out so we left both times.

Maia being a female is a different story.  I can't predict her behavior around an angry dog.  She has run before and she has lunged but luckly I was right there and grabbed her collar before contact was made.  If another dog bothers Maia, Rocco will pin the other dog gently and then walk away, it is pretty cool to see but I am sure it is scarey for the other owner.

I just don't understand why some people don't see the fault in their own dog just because they are smaller.  I am by no means saying my dogs are perfect, they are not by any means.  Rocco plays too rough and loves chasing other dogs and pulling their legs out from under them.  Maia guards her stuff and snarls to protect it which I have heard to part her breed, part being an unspayed female.

As for protecting, Rocco is more interested to see what the new person might have for him and jumping on them if they are men.  Depending on the person, Maia is too interested in hiding from them or beating Rocco to them.  They big, mean barks though and run at people (to greet them but new people don't know that is what they are doing).

I just have a plain Ford Ranger, extended cab (2 full doors, 2 half door).  Both my guys fit in the extended cab part with the jump seats folder up.  I have four wheel drive that drives gas mileage down.  You probably don't need that in CA.  Lately it costs less than $30 to put gas in a little less than once a week.

I love my truck but I know I will outgrow it once I start having kids.  Hopefully by then gas prices will have gone down. 8)

I brought my exboyfriends female chocolate lab into the house when Rocco was 8 months old.  He like her but played very rough.  I just made sure to watch them when they were together.  I also made sure that the puppy spent time in her cage alone so Rocco and I could have our time together still.  We never had food issues but he constantlly snatched her toys, bones, and treats.  Stupidly I let him do this now she protects her stuff, which really isnt' my issue anymore but I feel a little (very little) bad about the fact that Rocco helped reinforce her guarding her stuff.

When Rocco was almost two I got Maia, OEM, and he knew exactly what to do with her.  Now they play rough, neither has ever gotten hurt (knock on wood).

I would get your big puppy around other puppies and see how he does.  Get him used a small animal being under, around, on top of him.  Plus little puppies bite and bite hard.  I have heard the older dog should mildly correct the puppy but not snap it's head off.  It is tough having two puppies but well worth it, they get to grow up together.

But be careful, you will now want a new puppy every 10 months and it is hard not to get one.  I foster puppies for a rescue and that gets my puppy fix in so I don't crave one as bad.  Though I have another Mastiff when I breed Maia next year.

I hope this helped.

I have been lucky with keeping kids around when I take my dogs out.  When I have kids with me people leave me alone and don't make rude comments about my dogs and their size.  Except once, a lady stopped to pet Maia, OEM, which Maia allowed but when the lady commented on my friends baby and stepped toward the baby, Maia barked at the lady.  The lady got huffy and walked away commenting on how I shouldn't let a mean dog around children.

Maia doesn't have a mean bone her body but she obviously didn't like that lady near the baby.  She had never been protective before and hasnt' done it again.  I think dogs have an innate since who what people are good hearted and what people have a monster inside.

What do you guys think?

I use the shedding blade on my medium (lab length) haird Newf mix, Rocco, and lately I get enough hair off ot make a small dog.  My Mastiff with the shorter hair really doesn't shed much.
If I don't brush Rocco often he gets dusty looking and looses his shine but as soon as I brush him he looks like he spent a day at the beauty parlor.  Plus, since I have brushed him at least once a week since he was a pup, he loves to be brushed.  He will come running just to be brushed.

let me know if it works on your guy.

My Newf mix, Rocco, sucks on things.  He usually sucks the nose of his bear or another one of his stuffed toys.  He has been known to suck socks, towels, fabric, pillows, or other soft objects.  I always assumed it was because he was taken from his mother too early due to her having to get heartworm treatment.  Why do you guys think he does this sucking :)

My Newf mix eats grass everytime we go outside.  He rarely throws up.  I think he just needs grass in his daily diet.  I feed him Science Diet Large Breed Adult.  Does anyone elses dog think that grass should be included on the menu?

Long hair is recessive in Mastiffs.  It is not undesirable or any less of a pure mastiff.  I would be careful with a breeder that has somehow found a way to only breed long hairs especially since they are not registering with AKC.  I am not saying the breeder is definately mix breeding but there is always the possibility.  If you want a long haired mastiff I would find a reputable AKC breeder to talk to and find out if their dogs have every thrown any long hairs.
I do think the long hairs are beautiful and probably seem to shed more due to the longer hair.  My mastiff doesn't seem to shed much at all but she is still a pup and this is her first summer out of the whelping box. :)
