Great Pyrenees Discussions / Terrible Teens
« on: December 24, 2005, 01:30:10 pm »
Well, Dyson is 7 month's old now and I guess he is going through his terrible teens.  We leave him down stairs at night and he chew's up everything..  Trash from knocked over trash cans and anything lefted on our end table.  Is that normal for 7 month old Pyrenees?  His Mother just had another litter of 6 (3M and 3F) and I was thinking about getting him another companion, but I am worried that it may be too much.  I know I should crate him, but I rather clean up ripped up trash than having to clean out his Crate Poop every morning.

Dyson got Fixed yesterday.  What suprised me is the Vet's office did not give any pain medication for him.  Is that normal?  They told us we could buy Aspirin and give him 1 tablet twice a day.  I was curious, for I know I would want something for the pain.

Thanks, Randy    :(

I guess I'm lucky, Dyson is not a barker.  He just sleeps, eats, and guards our little girl by walking beside her where ever she roams.

Cute puppy, cute baby!  He and your daughter look so happy together!  The markings on his face are so interesting.  Binky had a mask as a pup but it's almost completely gone now.   Binky is 5 months too..  Do you mind if I ask how much does he weighs?  I think Binky is about 45lbs now.

Sorry for the Delay, at 5 months he weighed 47lbs, he is a little over 6 months old now and weighs 65lbs.  He had a big growth spirt during that month.  Binky is a beautiful pup.  I don't think Dyson's markings will not go away all the way.

Aww...great pics...I remember you were having issues with housebreaking. ..how is that going...beauti ful dog you have there and your liitle girl is too cute for words

His housebreaking has became pretty good.  He became a outside dog when I couldn't stop him from pooing in his Kennel.  He even poo'd in his kennel when it was outside with the door open.  Now we let him sleep inside at nights and we are no longer having issues with Poo or Potty (knock on wood).  Thanks to all for the advice and compliments.  I too love his Face Markings.

Welcome to BPO...  They have Great info here....

We have Dyson enrolled in Puppy training.  He is currently a little over 3 months.  The class recommends a standard collar and leash.  When walking the puppy, if he pulls you should stop and wait for him to loosen the leash, before you begin again.  If he just stops and won't move,  snap the leash repeatly til he comes.  Do not apply a constant pull for he will think its a challenge.   Good Luck...

*gasp!*

I would NEVER NEVER EVER advise anyone to "snap" the leash on the collar of a 3 months old baby puppy!!!

Puppies at this age need ENCOURAGEMENT and HELP to come along on the leash.

That puppy is just a baby.

I would STRONGLY URGE you to find a different training class, as these methods are archaic and NOT necessary to train dogs, not even BIG dogs.

 :(

I understand your concerns, but maybe I mislead you by the word snap.  Quick wrist snaps, not yanking.  Plus I forgot to mention it should be perform with words come, come, come at the same time.  My puppy isn't that bad, but his brother is a LOG.  Meaning if it wasn't for the quick snaps, you'd be sitting in the same spot all day.  Maybe it is specific for the Great Pyr breeds, I don't know.  But, I am happy with the training I have received so far.

I have one more question?  Has anyone had JPS performed to their Great Pyr.  I guess I'm asking should it be done or not.  My friend's Vet is recommending this be done to prevent future hip dysplasia for his Puppy Pyr?
Thanks to all for the recommendation s on the DEW Claw Removal question.

Link to review the procedure: http://www.nwk9.com/jps.htm

Thank you all so much.  Dyson will definitely keep his Dew Claws and I will pass this information to his brother and sister's owners to let them decide.   My wife and I were on the edge side of NO, thanks for pushing us over....   :)

Asking advice, getting mixed reviews from Vets.  Should I have my Great Pyrenees Double Dew Claws removed or not?
