Yes Saints like to "sit like people" on couches, chairs and laps (and coffee tables). Barney even likes to sit on the stairs like that and me sitting next to him. We kinda hang like that.
Perhaps they are trying to relieve the weight on their legs (I heard this but am not too convinced)
Saints also like to sit next to you when you are standing and lean against your legs (major weight here) When you move, Barney will just slide down to the floor and wait for you to pet his tummy.
And of course, Saints like to lay across your feet when you are standing. This may actually be part of the ancestery - keeping the stranded skier warm - then again may not
Bottom line - love the saint and let him (her) sit on the couch, chair, lap or stair. Just love them

My Saint, Barney is 14 months old. He really loves his squeeky ball (with knobs as described  above). He plays catch and soccer with it. He also carries around his "bunny" - a stuffed bunny that squeeks. He walks around with it in his mouth squeeking it and brings it to us to squeek it for him. So silly for a great big slobber dog! He is a beauty with a full mask but I haven't figured how to post his picture.

My year old Saint, Barnie has a favorite toy. It is a ball that squeeks. I don't remember the brand but I can describe it. It is about 4-5 inches in diameter and has an obnoxious squeek. It has little knob like projections all over it and comes in various loud colors. When we throw it to Barney, he catches it and then runs around squeeking it in his mouth. After a minute or so,  he drops it at our feet to throw it again and the game continues. I've noticed that when no one can play with him at the time, he picks up his ball and walks around squeeking it. Hope this helps

Saint Bernard General Discussions / Re: Saint's as a family member

Our Saint, Barney, just turned one. He is pretty much past the puppy stage and is the best dog we ever had - smart, gentle, beautiful and loyal. He's a rough coat so yes he sheds ALOT. And yes he drools, but it is manageable. After eating and drinking, we wipe his mouth (face) with a slobber towel. He actually likes this. After exercising (very limited) we wipe his mouth. He sleeps in our room (on the floor) and doesn't drool all night.
As a puppy he had the annoying habit of nipping our feet, ankles etc. When he was about 10 months old (and puppy teeth became a bit more of a problem) we put a few pennies in a coffee can and shook it at him. Nipping stopped immediately. Second time he nipped after that I shook the can again again and said "nip and you get the can" Again he stopped. He nipped a few days later and I said "do I need to get the can?" He stopped. How's that for smart? A few weeks ago he got crazy and started jumping (not like him) so I said "do I need to get it" He stopped and looked at me - then kissed and kissed. Is that not smart or what?
He's the best dog ever - beautiful long coat (hair all over the place and I need to buy stock in Hoover) goofy (steels my hairbrush and brings it to me to start the chase) loving (always by us - leaning on us as well as always being in the same room)
When he meets little dogs, he instinctively lays down to their level and lets them use him like a trampoline.
When he was little, he liked to bring sticks into the house (still does). He tried and it didn't fit through the door. He tried again and it still didn't fit.
so he put down the stick and picked it up by the end and easily brought it in. Smarter than a lot of people I know
Bottom line - get a saint - and buy a good vacuum and lots of slobber towels. Then sit back and enjoy the best breed ever

Saint Bernard General Discussions / Re: Question for Saint owners

My sweet and goofy Saint, Barney, just turned one year old. He is the sweetest and smartest dog we have ever owned. He loves everyone and wants to play with every dog he meets. If a dog growls at he, he simply walks away. When seeing little dogs or little children, he immediately lays down to be at their level. He even lets little dogs play with him like he is a trampoline. Barney likes a lot of attention and can be truely called a velcro dog. He's always at our sid - sometimes laying beside us, sometimes laying on our feet and sometimes leaning on us.
Does he drool? Yup! After he eats or drinks water, we wipe his mouth with a slobber towel - they're all over the house - so we don't have any real issues with it.
Does he shed? - Yup - He is a rough coat so I wish I could just gather up all of the spare fur and make a virtual puppy (no feeding or walking necessary) and become a millionaire.
Would I ever give this guy up? Not in my lifetime.
But we did take him to puppy school and obedience training. Also we take him out often for new experiences so he can relate to new sights, smells and sounds.
Hope this gives you a little taste of the benefits of owning a real saint

This is only my personal opinion. Your dog is showing signs of aggression to other dogs. He needs to be in an environment where he can't hurt another animal or God forbid a child. If you have a place where he would be happy without competition, I strongly suggest he move to a new home. Living in fear is not good for you or the dog. Good luck

We have a Saint named Barney too. He's 11 months old and the very best dog we ever had - smart and a huge personality. He is our puppy with an exclamation point! I could go on forever how great he is

This is just too funny. We have an absolutely adorable 10 month old Saint. My husband walks him and he (Barney the dog) is always the center of attention. My husband calls Barney a chick magnet. Barney is always the center of attention - so much so that people actually stop their car car and get out to pet the boy.
Fortunately my husband is mature enough to realize that the attention is going to Barney. I was the one that picked out this beautiful pup and we don't have any jelously problems.
To us it a win win situation. Barney is a beauty - and a nut - and we enjoy all of the attention that is lavished upon him

Hi all,
I'm new here (actually tried this several times before but never accessed a reply)
I have the most georgeous St Bernard ever. He's 8 months old and I call him my itty bitty buddy. His name is Barney and has a very loving and gregarious personality.
We've had many dogs over the years - alot of them really good - but Barney stands out as the most intelligent, devoted and really a clown.
We are having a problem though with his nipping. Sure could use some hints.
Since I seem to be a dummy on reading replies, someone please e-mail me at lindar5928@yahoo.com and let me know how to read any replies that come in
Thanks - I really would like to be part of your gang

Hi all,
I have posted a "I'm new" message a couple of times. The problem is that I do not know how to read the responses. I could use a bit of help here
I have the most adorable 8 month old St Bernard, Barney. If I could figure out how to post his picture, you would all fall in love with him immediately.
Please help me figure this out. I've been told that this site is easy to navigate, but I'm at a loss.
My e-mail is lindar5928@yahoo.com

Barney, my 8 month old saint, leans against me all the time. But I have to hold on to something so he doesn't knock me over LOL

My saint, Barney is 8 months old. He is still a puppy - thinking that the world is his playgroud. He is such a sweetie. He does not realize that at 122 pounds he is a big guy. When he sees little dogs or kids he goes straight down to the floor to get face-to-face. He expects a lot of attention and only goes outside to do his business unless we go out with him. We have had many dogs and Barney is by far the best dog we ever owned. Yes he drools, and waits for us to wipe his face after drinking and eating. He has completed puppy and basic obedience training. Two trainers have suggested we continue for Canine Good Citizen training.

I have an 8 month old Saint. When we take him to Petsmart we get the same reactions - "oh my god he is only a puppy" "How big will he get"
But when he sees a child or a little dog, he automatically lays down to their level. He is more gentle than the smaller breeds and seldom gets any appreciation.
Evey now and then someone will approach and say what a beautiful dog he is - these are people that have owned a large breed dog

FAQs about puppies / nipping
« on: March 31, 2006, 07:38:39 pm »
Hi all,
We have the most beautiful and loving saint in the world (ok I'm prejudiced) He is 8 months old and a sweetie. But we have a couple of problems. He likes to nip our feet as we go upstairs (safety hazard) and steals everything.
Any advice?
