ok, so diesel is at a good enough weight i feel comfortable walking him now!  unfortunately, this is only his second walk, and the first one i took him on was in the day time when i first got him, and was trying to get some energy out.  the second was tonight, and was his first night walk.  normally, dogs pull at the leash... diesel... well, diesel likes to push.  he doesn't want to leave the house, so he gets in front of you and turns, pushing you in the opposite direction.  he even does it to axle.  i've tried to just hold him to the side, which works, but he leans then, and my arms start killing me after the first half of the block, he never pulls though, just puts all his weight on you.  does anybody have an idea how to get him to stop pushing/leaning when we go on walks??

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / did you know...
« on: November 22, 2006, 12:55:08 am »
Did you know that purebred shelter/rescue dogs can get an ILP number and compete for titles in AKC performance events?

Indefinite Listing Privilege
Giving all purebred dogs a chance to compete

Note: A fee of $10 was instituted, effective January 1, 2003, for Indefinite Listing Privilege transfers or duplicate certificates. For more information contact ILP@akc.org.

The AKC, ILP and You
Many people have discovered the fun of teaming up with their dogs and competing in AKC Events. But, not all of those wonderful canine athletes that you see at these events are registered with the AKC. Some might be enrolled in the AKC's Indefinite Listing Privilege (ILP), a program that allows unregistered dogs of registrable breeds to compete in AKC Performance and Companion Events, also 24 specific breeds in the FSSĀ® Program that are eligible for Companion Events.

If you have a purebred dog that cannot be registered with the AKC and have a desire to see what your dog can do in real competition, an ILP number is your ticket to the world of AKC events and clubs!

Indefinite Listing Privilege Program (ILP): The program that provides purebred dogs a second chance.
There are various reasons why a purebred dog might not be eligible for registration. The dog may be the product of an unregistered litter, or have unregistered parents. The dog's papers may have been withheld by its breeder or lost by its owner. Sometimes, it is the dog itself that was "lost." There are many dogs enrolled in the ILP program after they have been surrendered or abandoned, then adopted by new owners from animal shelters or purebred rescue groups. The ILP program allows the dog and owner a second chance at discovering the rewards of participating in AKC events.

What AKC events may an ILP dog Participate in?
The Indefinite Listing Privilege Program (ILP) is designed to allow dogs to participate in AKC Companion and Performance Events. The AKC Events that an ILP dog can participate in are:

    * Agility Trials (All Breeds)
    * Earthdog Trials (Small Terriers and Dachshunds)
    * Herding Tests and Trials ( Herding Breeds, Rottweilers and Samoyeds)
    * Hunt Tests (Most Sporting Breeds and Standard Poodles)
    * Junior Showmanship (All Breeds)
    * Lure Coursing (Sighthounds)
    * Obedience Trials (All Breeds)
    * Rally Trials (All Breeds)
    * Tracking Tests (All Breeds)

Once enrolled in the ILP program, entering AKC events is as easy as with a registrable dog. The only difference is that instead of an AKC registration number, you would list the dog's ILP number on the Entry form.

How can you apply for an ILP number?
Applications for enrollment into the Indefinite Listing Program can be downloaded or by emailing ILP@akc.org. When requesting a form via email please include your name and current mailing address. Remember, ILP numbers can only be issused to AKC registrable breeds.

The following must be submitted with a completed ILP application:

    * Two recent and clear color photographs of the dog;
          o one full front view showing the facial characteristic s of the dog;
          o one view showing the full side profile of the dog standing on a flat surface (not grass).

      (ALL PHOTOS SHOULD BE TAKEN AT EYE LEVEL IN A STANDING POSITION,
       INCLUDE THE WHOLE DOG IN THE PHOTO.  DO NOT SHOOT DOWN ON THE DOG.)

    * Proof from a veterinarian that the dog has been spayed/neutered.

    * A non-refundable $35.00 application fee.

Once compiled, the completed ILP application along with the items listed above should be mailed to:

    The American Kennel Club/ILP
    P. O. Box 37933
    Raleigh, NC 27627-7933

Enrollment in the Indefinite Listing program is not to be construed as an alternative form of registration, but rather, as a listing so that dogs who are ineligible for AKC registration may participate in AKC Companion and Performance Events. An ILP may be cancelled for cause.

Over 2000 dogs were granted ILP numbers in the year 2001, and the American Kennel Club awarded over 2000 AKC titles to ILP dogs in that same year. Enrollment in the ILP program is easy and the benefits for you and your dog are endless.

For more information or questions about the ILP program contact ilp@akc.org

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / questions!
« on: November 20, 2006, 01:03:28 am »
ok, first question.  the post with the link to the article about dog manners really made me think of how my dogs act in public.  we only have one problem, which is whenever someone brings their dogs anywhere near us, axle and diesel "pet" them.  or maybe they're trying to squish them??  either way, they've both get big paws, and i'd like to try to teach them it's not acceptable, but i don't know how.  the water bottle works on diesel although it makes him freak out, but axle has really thick fur so he doesn't even feel it, and squirting his face or butt doesn't phase him.  this is also related to the "shake" command, which in another variation but same problem because axle learned from my 3 y/o to shake with small children, and unintentionall y knocks them over or may accidentally scratch them.  i know he's just trying to do like we taught him, but this causes some problems when it's not our small children as you can imagine.  he only does it from a sit, and he always sits when he's walked up to by small children, there's no stopping him, i've tried.

second question.  our dog crate has a plastic pan in the bottom, because when i leave i put diesel in it.  yesterday, axle's big butt got in it and the plastic cracked, and i'm worried that one of their paw pads or the skin / fur may get pinched and hurt them, as it's very hard plastic.  i can't just leave it out, because diesel gets so upset i know he'll eat the floor, he already ate the dog bed / quilt that i spent several weeks making!  it was so nice, but the first time i left (which i should have known better) diesel ate it.   :-\  where can i buy a replacement bottom??

sorry it's so long, and thanks for any input!

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / diesel's stomach
« on: November 19, 2006, 03:59:59 am »
ok, so we found out what the UFO diesel hacked up yesterday is.  a tree branch!  the first piece was bigger than my hand if i rolled it up, and last night we diesel was ever so nice as to hack up a not so digested, food covered piece that we could actually recognize.  after a check up, though, he seems to be unphased from this, and back to eating like a champ!  pic is of the smaller piece #2.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / UFO's in belly
« on: November 17, 2006, 11:46:32 pm »
ok, so diesel ate a UFO (unknown freaggin object) the size of my hand rolled up... literally.  i have no idea what it is, but it looks like a rawhide chewy, just as hard, it just isn't that.  does anyone know how to tell if your dog's having problems because of something like this?  i know the blood in the poop, or vomiting blood, but is there anything else i should watch for?  is there a way to know if your dog has a blockage?

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / custom dog clothes
« on: November 17, 2006, 02:30:16 am »
i found this site, kustomkanine.c om get custom dog clothes.

you can get hoodies, shirts, and coats, with whatever design you choose and whatever color shirt etc you want, and they have sizes XS to XL.  the "grand opening" price is $24.99, and i guess you'll need to ad shipping.  thought i'd throw this out to everyone who has been looking for different dog clothes than what everyone else has.  unfortunately, the XL isn't big enough for danes, etc.  but maybe for some of the smaller big paws that are 61-80lbs.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / chaining laws
« on: November 16, 2006, 02:22:48 am »
ok, i was looking to see what states/areas had already adopted the chaining laws, when i came across this article

Orange County law bans chaining dogs outside during day
July 13,, 2005

Orange County law bans chaining dogs outside during day
Associated Press

ORLANDO, Fla. - Orange County commissioners passed a law banning dog owners from chaining their dogs outdoors during the day.

The law was unanimously passed Tuesday night.

The law comes after 4-year-old Myles Leakes was fatally mauled in Orlando in a relative's back yard in December.

"We're trying to reduce the number of people bit by dogs," said Vanessa Bouffard-Fehl, Orange County's animal services division spokeswoman. "People should be able to walk outside without being afraid."

Shavonda Leakes, Myles' mother, said she was pleased the ordinance was passed.

"There's nothing here that's perfect," Leakes said. "I just feel like, if we can prevent anything that is fatal or permanently disfiguring that would be a plus for our community."

It bans chaining dogs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and fines range from $75 to $250, the Orlando Sentinel reported Wednesday.

Some people at the meeting were against the law saying dogs are not dangerous because they are chained, but because they have not been socialized.

Palm Beach and Okaloosa Counties have similar laws.

my question is, how is not chaining your dogs going to make a difference.  if the dog is chained, OBVIOUSLY, it's going to have to stay in the owners yard.  more so of a chance than if an escape artist is just put in a fence.  if people want to feel "safe" from dogs, couldn't they just stay out of other people's yards?  the arguments some of these people make are really kinda stupid...  not chaining dogs = safe... how about people stay out of a chained dogs reach = safe...

our vet said that the ridges are normal, and his "lump" on his forehead is only because he is growing and not quite filled out yet, so he doesn't have the fatty tissue to fill in the blanks and make him look normal.  puts me at ease!  forgot to ask them what he weighed in at, i'll have to call back and ask!

239
i noticed right after we got diesel that when he would start growing he would get ridges on his nose.  i saw a post on here about the same thing, but can't find it.  i was wondering, is it also common for them to get a slight lump on their forehead every so often (about ever two weeks, right between his eyes and up a little) when they're growing?  we started the satin balls, and worked great!  his appetite has really kicked up now, i guess it needed a jump start.  i wasn't sure if his lump was normal or not, so i figured i would ask you guys!

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / what a gorgeous dane!
« on: November 14, 2006, 10:57:46 pm »
i saw this dane on petfinder and was so touched, he is so gorgeous for someone to do this to!  i just thought maybe a few of us may be willing to help sponsor his heart worm treatment and continued care!

"MEET FRED" Fred is in desperate need of rescue or someone or several people to sponsor him!!!! Fred was found at a local shelter, he was very sick with A upper respiratory infection, he was and still is very thin, and he has HEARTWORMS!!! His upper respiratory infection has cleared up and he has gained a good bit of weight, (he still has a good bit to gain). BUT NOW HE NEEDS SOME HELP WITH THOSE HEARTWORMS!!! This will be very expensive to treat in a dog this size. We need to raise about $500.00 Fred is at a boarding facility for now, we will need to raise t he money to treat his heartworms and will need to find rescue or a foster home very soon!!! His care is being taken of by just a couple of volunteers at the moment, but they will need some financial help to continue. We have enough money together for his board to last till the end of November . If we cannot find help by then he will need to go back to the shelter. Fred is a big lovable teddy bear and gets along well with all the other dogs. PLEASE HELP US SAVE THIS DOG!!!!

If you think you might be interested in adopting "Fred", please download an application by clicking here. (Download Instructions: Click the link and choose "Save" NOT "Open". After the application has been filled out completely, save your changes and then email the completed form to Sherry at sbiang@bellsouth.net.)
