: Anyone Fermiliar with Megaesophagus?
: Gevaudan_Jo May 29, 2007, 10:26:37 AM
My breeder i got zeus and Memphis from just recently had a litter of 11 puppies  :o and i have been joking with her saying that she can always afford to give me one, for free!!! anyways... she emailed me tonight asking me if i was serious about a free puppy because she might have one that has Megaesophagus. i read about this, and it doesnt sound pleasant, and seems to have alot of work involved...Als o, i read that it can get better as the puppy grows up. But i'm curious if anyone has dealt with this before? Please post any experiances.
Thank you
Jodi

Depending on the severity, it can be difficult, i hope that this pup outgrows it!
i thought i heard there was a surgery they could do, but, it is a risky one.
good luck whatever you decide to do.

A friend of mine's 5 yr old dane has this as well.  His is managable, but he does need to be on a fairly mushy diet.  He gets canned food mixed with water until it's an oatmeal consistency.  A piece of kibble here and there doesn't appear to harm him either as he usually finishes off his sister's food, he just can't have that much or her will throw it back up.

I've babysat for him several times and he only coughed up a little bit one time.  He will cough on occasion, it actually sounds like he's clearing his throat, but otherwise he lives a very normal life.  B/c of his mega, he was only around 100 lbs when they adopted him, he is now a slightly chubby 160.

Depending on how severe it may be, it can be very manageable and the pup can live a very normal and active life with normal life expectancy.
