I decided to go the way I almost never go. I guess there is a reason for everything. I brought along a couple of pieces of toast for breakfast-I almost never do that either. I pulled up to a stop sign and this little skinny black dog came up to my car. He was hungry and looking for a hand out. I felt badly for him, but when he turned his head I knew I had to get him, so I gave him my peice of toast to get him in the car. It looks as if he had been attacked by another dog or something and it nearly ripped one of his ears off. It is very badly infected and the ear canal is definitely affected. I'm not sure if we can save him, but we'll try. He is probably around 6-8 months old,his adult teeth are in but his "boy parts" aren't totally mature.
He's on antibiotics and is comfortable for now. We are going to get another vet to evalutate his ear, most likely he will loose it because of the ear canal being so badly infected. He'll probably need an ablation on that one ear. Once his fever comes down, we'll sedate him and clean it up really well and take a much better look at it as well. If he pulls through, he is going to have a long road of recovery ahead of him. I need to think of a name for him, even if he doesn't make it, he still needs a name.

I thank God for angels like you...It is nice to know that others are looking out for the homeless, strays, & "unwanteds"...It makes my burden easier to carry & does my heart good to know that I, & people like me, have backup out there...Thank you & God bless you & all of yours. :-*

I'm so glad you were able to help this guy out. I hope everything works out for the best for him and he finds himself a nice home.

I am thinking that if ever a dog needed to be named Lucky- this one is it, because you found him. I am so glad that you decided to help him and take him in and god bless you. I wish that there were more people like you in the world.

If he pulls through but loses the ear, I'm thinking you need to name him Van Gogh! ;D
Or Vincent. You could call him Vinny for short! hahhaha! Great idea, Holly. (Of course)
And, you are SO awesome for doing this! He really needed you and he found you! YAAAAAAAAY!

I've been calling him Vincent. I didn't even think of Evander! I may have to reconsider...
He is doing well today. He had his first of probably many surgeries. We are doing our best to save the ear, he probably can't hear out of that one, but if we can save the ear canal, it would be best. In case he continues to make wax, then it will have an escape route instead of getting backed up.

Poor baby!! I'm so happy he has found you. You are an Angel for taking him in. I believe everything happens for a reason. He is yours for taking a different route to work. Here's to a quick recovery! ((Hugs))

Thanks all, I haven't been able to see him today as I'm at school all day (8:00 am to 7:30 pm -oy!) but will see him tomorrow. I'm going to try and remember to take my camera with me and get up to date pictures so I can track his progress.
I have a feeling this fella is going to steal alot of hearts :-*

I had school yesterday, so unfortunately, I didn't get to see hime. I did today, and he's doing very well!
Ya'll, this fella is so sweet, he just melts my heart! His ear is doing pretty well, the outside is staying stiched, but the inside isn't as well, which was expected. As we were cleaning and medicating his ear, he whined, but didn't offer to bite, growl, anything-he just licked my hand
He is got some sort of appetite, which as skinny as he is, I can't blame him at all. He thinks he's past having to eat several small meals and should have several LARGE meals, but I had to explain to him that would not be good. I'm sure the Labby side to him doesn't help that appetite any, lol!
So far, he has gained 2.5 pounds! He was thirty pounds when I found him and had worms out to wazoo. Hopefully after a good round of deworming, we've got those cleared out and he can continue to gain weight and get healthy. We will do another fecal in two weeks to see if he needs to be dewormed anymore, but after three days of panacur and one dose of strongid T, I think he'll be alright.

Another update!
Vinnie is up to 35 pounds-he's gained five pounds in less than a week! Whoo-hoo! He's still thin, but he doesn't look unhealthy thin.
He's really good about going potty outside, but he isn't too keen on the leash. He doesn't freak out on the leash, he just stops if he doesn't want to go somewhere. He may be a little iffy with other dogs (understandable!) but he doesn't seem really aggressive or anything. I think he was surprised by the one he growled at today cause he seemed fine with Abby-who was being a brat today.
Vince's ear still looks bad, but is getting better. We are in the waiting game to whether or not it is going to heal properly. The outside is looking good so far, we were expecting it to break open, but so far it hasn't. The inside did reopen and we've left it open for now to drain. The ear canal is still open, so that is good. He'll go under sometime next week and we'll close his ear up again, and neuter him-this boy is horny....
Hopefully that will be it on surgeries, but theres no way to tell.

What a beauty! You are doing an amazing job with him! Amazing what good loving, some food and tlc will do for a doggie. He sure was led to the right car when he found you! Thank you for loving him up....(his coat looks so healthy in that last picture!)

Vinny threw up a couple of times today. He doesn't seem to be feeling badly nor did he have a temperature, so I really hope its nothing serious.
He had a nausea shot and is being fasted-I really hate to have to do that to him-for today. Hopefully its just an upset tummy and he'll be better tomorrow. Please keep some good thoughts for him.

I just realized why that last picture is so darn cute and why it reminds me of one of my boys....he's sticking out his lower lip!. I just love it when dogs pout. It is the cutest thing ever. :-\ :-*

Sorry, no new pictures today, but an update nonetheless. Vinnie is doing GREAT! The vet checked him today and cautiously said she didn't think he would need anymore surgeries on the ear. I really hope that is the case. When he get neutered (next Friday, not this Friday) we'll look at it closer since it is so hard for him to sit still. I'm sure his ear is still uncomfortable, but he is also wanting to kiss everyone in sight and eat everything in sight!
So, so far, so good. I really hope I can find a really good home for him now

Update for this weekend (sorry, no pictures, if I remember my camera when I do kennels tomorrow, I'll get some then!)
THE E-COLLAR IS OFF!!!! His ear looks awesome and it is looking more and more like he won't need another ear surgery after all. We took the stitches out yesterday. He's going to be neutered next Friday, so we will see how is ear looks in depth when he is knocked out.
He does so well in his cage, so far, he hasn't had not one accident in the kennel. He always waits until I put him outside in a run or leash walk him in the grass. I'm hoping to bring him home next weekend then I'll really get to evaluate him with other dogs, cats, and house training.

Anyone ready for another update?
Vince is doing wonderfully. He was neutered Friday, and I brought him home yesterday and he fits in like he's been here forever. He is a wonderful dog-he acts like he has been a house dog before. He likes to hang out in the crate, isn't hyper, potties outside, he is awesome!
His ear looks great, and it doesn't look like he'll need anymore surgeries. Both ears have to be flused twice daily for a week and then we'll recheck.

Wow! This is the first time I see this thread and, first of all let me say that it is absolutely NO coincidence that he wandered up to YOUR car. How many people would pull over and pick up up a scraggly-looking, bloody, beaten up, sad-sack dog (I mean, except all of us on this board)?
Secondly, go back to the first few pix you took of him and look at those last ones. You can tell how much better he is feeling. The poor thing looked so sad, sick, nervous and scared in the first pix and now he's beaming with happiness and gratitude. He looks like a completely different dog!!
Huge kudos to you and your family. I know when you have so many critters at home it's easy to say, "what's one more for a little while," but it really does put a strain on your "keepers" and the family - especially when the foster needs so much extra attention. You earned your wings again!!

Anyone want a Vinnie update?
He's doing very well! He's up to forty pounds now and is loving life. His ear is great, and you really can't tell there was anything wrong with just by looking at him normally. If you touch and lift the ear, you can, though.
He is still getting along great with the other dogs and with the cats. He'll chase the cats, but when he "catches" them, he's like "Hello!" He doesn't even put his mouth on them, I think he just likes to see them run, lol!
When we aren't outside, he has claimed my recliner as his, so I either have to sit on the couch or at the bar. He is getting a little spoiled here, lol!

AWWW I just read the whole thread. Vinny looks great! I really believe that everything happens for a reason and you were meant to save him. He is such a sweet heart! Congrats on doing such a wonderful job with him. ;D And big hugs to Vinny.

I remember when Gyrl showed up at our house and I was talking to my old boss/landlord. I was saying how odd it was that she showed up at our house and I'll never forget his response.
"Animals know that there are special people out there and the guardian angels just help guide them to them."
It was sweet and I think its fitting for you.

Thanks all! Vinnie is a really great dog, and as much as I'd love to keep him, I'm going to do my best to find him a home. I think if he weren't black, he'd probably be placed already...I don't understand why black dogs are so hard to place, I think they are beautiful!

Just read the whole thread -- God bless you for taking care of that sweet baby! The before and after pictres are incredible. and seeing him so happy now breaks my heart just thinking about how scared and lost he must have been when he found you! Sure wish I could take him, but I'll pray he finds a perfect home that will love him as well as you have!
