It looks like just a regular rope in the picture. There are a few toys that I highly recommend for durability that can be used for tug:

• The 'hardcore fire hose toy' (large size is big enough to be tugged) is really hard to destroy http://www.kyjen.com/dogtoys/page_01.shtml#firehose
  
• The paw tracks brand is made out of real tire and is super durable. Zoey used to love playing tug with their 'paw tracks tire with rope' http://www.mammothpet.com/pawtracks.asp

It's a Milkbone toy. One end was a loop, in the middle was a ball, and there's a knot at the end. Believe it or not I got it at Dollar General for like 2 bucks. But they've already pulled out the loop, so now it's a straight rope. Oh well, not bad for a 2 dollar toy.
