Saint Bernard General Discussions / Re: Saints and cats?

 :)Hi, all!  Here's an update:
I shouldn't have worried one bit over Annie getting along with the cats!  She's been home one week, and she has accepted the cats as part of the house.  She did meet each of them face-to-face, and they let her know what they thought of her!  PhatCat and NormaJane each gave her a growl and a hiss, and Annie looked at them and backed away a little, and she's figured out that they run too fast for her!  The cats are not afraid of Annie, and she basically ignores them.  It's working out great!

Siberian Husky Discussions / Re: New to Sib Huskies - Info Please

 ;D  Hi, NancyAnn!
Congratulation s on your new 'baby'!  She's beautiful!!!  She looks like a purebred to me (I've been happily owned by two Siberians)  Our last, Cheyanne, lived to 16.  They are wonderful dogs!
This part of your post made me laugh:
"When I threw it, she raced after it on the slippery linoleum floor, struggling to get traction."

We have a long hallway that ends in the kitchen.  Cheyanne would be let in from the door on the far end of the house, and go racing down the hall towards the treats in the kitchen.  She'd get going so fast on the carpet that when she hit the lino in the kitchen, she'd slide right into the trash can like it was a bowling pin!  This would happen nearly every time we let her in.  Good memories!
You will have lots of good times with your Angelina.  I heartily recommend the agility training, as Sibes really want to have a job to do, and they need A LOT of daily exercise.  It keeps them happy.  Welcome to the board from another newbie!

Your 'guys' look like so much fun!  Can you tell me how to put pics into a post?

I have to agree w/ gr8dame.  The children come first.
I have had a male and a female husky over the last 20 years.
They are wonderful dogs, but need to be trained and supervised and also to know for certain who is alpha (you). Because of their more independent nature, this is a big task.  They are very social and want to be with their 'pack' (your family), but the males, especially, seem to be more aloof and harder to train.  You can't watch them 24/7, and any dog should not be around children if it show any signs of agression.  (IMNSHO)
Has your friend had the dog since puppyhood?  Has she been unable to exercise him frequently and get his energy out?
It may be due to pent up frustrations if he's not exercised enough.  Siberians need LOTS of exercise time!
Just my 'two cents'.  Hope all goes well for them.

:'(  Hugs for you and your family...  it is so hard when the time comes to say goodbye to a beloved friend.  Perhaps your Allie and our Cheyanne are playing together on the bridge.  Cheyanne left us last Sept. after 16 yrs.
My heart goes out to you.

Saint Bernard General Discussions / Saints and cats?
« on: March 13, 2007, 04:36:08 pm »
Hi all,
I am wanting to adopt a rescue Saint female, 5-yrs.  I have found her, though we haven't met.  We have two indoor cats and a golden retriever female, also 5-yrs.  How are Saints with cats?  Ours are not agressive, but will take a swipe at the dog if she's bothering them to play.  Does the breed generally tolerate (ignore?) cats and other small animals?  I know there will be an adjustment period.  I had a female Saint as a teenager, but we didn't have cats then.  Any input from experienced Saint & cat parents?  Thanks!

An important aspect of the Berner to understand is that they are highly touch sensitive and emotional.

Hello, I am also new here and am wondering if you could explain what 'touch sensitive' means?  Does this mean they do or do not like to be touched?  Is this a 'needy' breed?  I am trying to determine if this is the dog for my family, also.
Thanks.
