Brody is 8 months old and is 29" at the shoulders last month she was 65 lbs. But she has a lot of catching up to do weight wise and height wise because she was locked in a cat carrier from 7weeks to 9 weeks. The vets are amazed she has grown as much as she has.

We had the same problem with Pita and she is 12 weeks old now. We have never had to crate any of the dogs except Pita. I guess I've gotten lucky. But Pita would go outside go potty then within 5 minutes of her being in our bedroom (one of the only carpeted places in the house) she would pee. So we started locking her up in the kitchen. We put the baby gate up she has her bed and a couple toys. We tell her its bedtime and put her over the gate. The first couple nites she howled ALL nite, so I turned the TV on and told her to hush and go to sleep. Now I leave the TV on very softly and she has slept through the nite for the last 5 nites without any howling. I think maybe the sound of the TV lets her know shes not alone.

Chaos...thats kind of how I feel to. But I also feel like i'm giving up on her. She has a lot of great potential. But this trainer doesn't have kids well she has fur kids. Pita is great with our other dogs, but I'm so scared to have her near the kids. Especially since I do foster care so I deal with a lot of behaviors. Robin and Brody are GREAT with the kids. I have pictures (some where) of 3 kids sittin on Robin. Robin and Brody were brought up with me pulling on their ears, grabbing their tails, sitting on them, laying on them, holding them down. And when I try to do any kind of training with Pita she gets aggressive. I fear that when the kids get here which I could have foster kids here as early as next week that they would try to play with Pita like they play with Robin and Brody and Pita bite them or get aggressive with them. So I think I am going to go ahead and part with Pita and let this trainer work with her. I think it would be best for my family as well as Pita.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Update on Pita

Well, things haven't been going so good with Pita. We have been working on her with the baby and the problems we were having there have gotten a little bit better however she has been showing a lot of aggression towards my husband and myself. A lot of the times it is when we are playing with the dogs. Brody loves to play with her stuffed toys and Pita is starting to play fetch too. Both dogs have their favorite toys and we throw them. They will only retrieve their favorite toy. The other nite my husband was playing with Brody, and Brody being the dane LOVES to wrestle. She will wait until my husband isn't paying attention when hes sitting on the floor watching TV and will go over and push him over then jump on top of him so Rob will flip her over and lay on her and rub her belly. Well Pita started to play so Rob got her toy and started to throw it for her...then went back to Brody well Pita came over and jumped on my husband and started growling and biting his neck and side of his face. It scared my husband and me and my husband grabbed Pita by the scruff of the neck and gave her a firm "no". That just made things worse. Pita lunged at him and bit his arm. We have had a pet behaviorist/trainer come to the house to work with Pita and she isn't having any luck. She said that overall Pita is a well trained dog. She thinks that maybe Pita had something wrong that was causing pain, or a chemical imbalance or something, and suggested we have her evaluated by the vet. We took Pita to the vet yesterday and they did a bunch of blood work, x-rays, and a scan of her brain. They didn't see anything out of the ordinary. I have talked to the behaviorist and she has told me that she would like to take Pita into her home. So I believe that in the best interest of Pita I am going to let the pet behaviorist take her home. I am scared that one of my kids will go to play with Pita and that she could do some serious damage. Am I giving up on her too easily? Am I doing the right thing? I am torn here.

When my male great dane Tonka was still with us he was 6 months or so when I rescued my female great dane. I had the best relationship with Tonka and there isn't a relationship that could ever compare to the one Tonka and I had. But when Brody came along she wasn't really bonded to anyone, she was a very independent dog. But when Tonka got very sick and I didn't bring him home from the vet and cried for days Brody was there for me. She still thinks shes a tiny lap dog but she cuddles up in my rocking chair with me and i rock her like i did when she was a baby. And ever since Tonka has been gone Brody has definately bonded to me, and I have a really good relationship with her now. It was like she sensed me hurting from the loss of Tonka that she felt she needed to fill his gap. Now she nows when I'm having a bad and seems to just want to cuddle. She still will climb up on my lap when I'm sitting in my rocking chair and I still rock with her. Its amazing how our dogs really know how we're feeling. And how we are feeling effects their moods

about this - to add to the competition, we can all post how much we've saved by, say June 1st to see who has saved the most? No prize, just bragging rights...
That sounds like a LOT of fun. Lets do it :)

We are having a lot of fun. We've even gone as far as if we go into a store and buy something on impulse whoever bought that item has to put the amount of what you buy into the other persons jar. Today we went to walmart and he bought a DVD rack that was on clearance for $17 so he had to put $17 in my piggy bank. Its so much fun. I think this was the first trip to walmart that i didn't through anything in the cart. :) I will probably keep saving until he saves up enough for his TV since the TV he wants is like $1800 plus tax...that way by the time he saves up that much I will have WAY more than the amount I need for my male great dane and can spend the extra money on the dogs or the kids  :)

My husband and I have started a little competition. There are a couple of things that we would like to get for ourselves but both of what we want cost a LOT of money. So we set up "piggy" banks for ourselves. We each took a baby formula can for now. And covered it in white paper, my husband wants a big screen TV so he put a picture of a big screen on his can, and ever since I lost my male great dane I have wanted another male dane. SO I put a picture of a dane on my can. We have already divided up the change that was in the ash tray of our car, and out of our change jar in the house. Everytime we decide not to eat out we divide the money we would have spent eating out between the two cans. Its been a lot of fun. I don't work so I've been looking for various ways to make money to put in my jar, I've been selling some of my old baby stuff that I'm not using anymore, and i do a LOT of crafts so i've been selling some dog sweaters, and blankets etc. Its turned into a lot of fun trying to think of ways to save money, and we are actually eating healthy because we don't want to spend the money eating out. I'm having so much fun with it that I just had to share it.

Nice pictures!! What part of Michigan did you visit--because I am near Jackson, and our snow is gone now!! Just a muddy mess around here now, I wish we had some snow back! ;D ;D
We spent a couple days in Macomb and then we went up to the Mt Pleasant area. We didn't have any snow in Macomb and got up to Mt Pleasant and we didn't have any there either. The night before we were suppost to leave to go back to Macomb we got 4 inches. I was so excited. So of course I had to take the baby out to play. She actually liked it was cute.

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Re: back on and needing help

I had a basset hound that was acting the exact same way you are describing. She would attack our other dogs a 90 lb lab mix and a great dane. She tore Tonka's ear (the great dane) and he had to have 4 stitches in it. She then did it again. She was perfectly fine as long as the other dogs were not around. I felt bad keeping her isolated from the family so I found her a home where she is the only dog. She is very happy and a completely different dog. Maybe you could try to find him a home where he is the only dog.

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Re: Having problems with Pita
« on: December 19, 2005, 11:39:43 am »
I am using a vinegar mixture in the spray bottle and it works on her when she is chewing on stuff that shes not suppose to be chewing on ex. the chair, shoes etc. But when it comes to her and the baby it just doesn't work. I am located in Tucson AZ. She is a very loving puppy and a LOT of fun, she gets along great with our other dogs however she is just plain mean to the baby. I never thought of her looking at Makaylee as her litter mate. What can I do about that. I would love to make this work but I'm kind of worried because I am adopting 2 boys 1yr and 3 yrs, and getting back into foster care where we will have 2 foster kids I'm not sure of the ages yet but most likely under the age of 4. So I don't want any of them to get hurt because of Pita's behavior.

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Having problems with Pita
« on: December 19, 2005, 11:08:04 am »
Hi everyone,
I have been having some TERRIBLE problems with Pita. She is acting very aggressive to my 2 month old daughter. I took her to the vet and the vet said she is healthy and nothing is wrong. I can't put my daughter down at all if Pita is in the house. Pita bites her hands, arms, legs and feet. If I put her in the swing she will jump up until she either gets in the swing or can grab onto her poor little feet. The other day I put her in the pack n play playpen that we have set up and went to make dinner Makaylee was sleeping and Pita was asleep...all of the sudden I heard Makaylee crying. Pita dug or chewed a hole through the mesh part of the pack and play and was in it with Makaylee's leg in her mouth.  I have tried a very firm no and pushing her away. I have tried a spray bottle, a can with beans in it, I have tried clapping my hands, I've tried distracting Pita with a toy but nothing seems to be getting better. Any suggestions? She isn't like this with me or my husband and she doesn't act aggressively towards the neighborhood kids who come over to play with the dogs at least once a day. The neighborhood kids range from 2 to 9yrs. But as much as I hate to say it if I can't fix this problem soon Pita is going to have to go to another home. Any help??

LOL we dont have a scale in our house either. Although I was pretty excited about getting on the scale while I was pregnant because I ended up LOSING a total of 35 lbs during my pregnancy. I completely changed my diet and ended up losing. I was concerned about it until my doctor made the comment "don't worry about it you were pretty fat before so the baby is using the fat you already had" She could have at least worded it a little nicer. LOL
