General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Re: Was this a good decision?
« on: November 21, 2006, 11:50:14 pm »
I think that Innova would be the best choice. Although, there are quite a few good brands on the market.
My pup is on raw. She hates grains and veggies of any kind. I was feeding her Solid Gold Wolf Cub for the first 3 weeks and it made her urine smell funky (must be that salmon in the food). Then we chaged to Innova and she loved it! She would not ctop sniffing the bag. Even now, while on raw, she is begging for it.
Sorry to hear about your dissapointment with raw feeding.  :(
What good for one is not good for the other. My pup loves meat and bones and really looking forward to every meal!

I have 3 Pyrs currently. From 8 mos to 7 years of age. I have not taken any of the Pyrs thru obedience training because they literally have a mind of thier own and they really do think that they are smarter than thier owner. Do not misinterprete that statement. I love my Pyrs and will always own a Pyr. Pyrs are one of the most gentle dogs I have ever met. I would feel comfortable in any situation with either children (disabled or ill) or the elderly with any one of my three Pyrs. Pyrenees are hard to describe. They are most comfortable with a job to do, preferably guarding. I do not currently have any life stock so they guard our property. They take this job very seriously.
I do make a habit of taking them out on a regular basis to dog friendly places.
I have also noticed that once my Pyrs have gotten past the puppy stage- they become more aloof. Not that they dont care or dont want to be loved on- but for the most part, cuddling is not in thier vocabulary. My oldest one is a rescue from an not too good situation and she is the most affectionate of the three.
The old lady (Dakota) was having to receive treatments from my vet for an extended amount of time- My vet has a young daughter. The daughter was walking thru the lobby, saw Dakota and immediatley came over and sat down by Dakota and just laid her head on Dakota. Dakota was most gentle with this child and has had that temperment with all children. ( I do not advocate any young child coming up and laying on just any dog- and we watch this child closely when we have Jake the Great Dane up there)
I know that Pyrs can be trained- I know that there is a Pyr on this board that has done exceedingly well in Rally Obedience.(Kudos to her owners on that)  I think that starting your pup off as soon as possible will really be beneficial. Read everything that you can on Pyrs, it will help, and PLEASE post pictures. I just love pics of Pyrenees puppies- and welcome to the board.

Oh gosh! Do they have a mine of their own! I have started obedience classes when Lily was 9 weeks. She is the best student ever! She new every command she had to know by the 4th class BUT....she refuses to do the HEEL one. She is 18 weeks now and still doesn't do heel. And I swear, she looks like a donkey when I have to drag her around or talk to her nicely "heel, heel, heel, heel, let's go girl". Nothing works! I am turning into a better person by having to deal with her!
On regular basis she doesn't pull on the leash. She always walks right next me.

It's to funny! Looks cute though!
Our breeder marked litters with food coloring. Lily had yellow spot between her shoulder blades. It took us 4-5 showers to get it out. Sorry!

Food Discussion & Information / Re: Raw diet??
« on: November 09, 2006, 07:32:28 am »
I just put my dog on raw diet about 3 weeks ago. It doesn't take long time to prepare meals and it's sure better for your dog then feeding kibble.
I have done a lot of homework before changing. Here is what I feed my pup:
meat (chicken, beef, lamb, etc.), bones (beef necks, turkey necks, beef ribs, chicken drumsticks, etc.), veggy glop (my dog hates it but without it her poop is too hard), raw eggs and cottage cheese sometime. I give her Vitamin E and fish oil every other day, Kelp and Alfalfa mix every day, and add some apple cider vinegar to her water. She loves it and looks great!
Let me know if you have any questions

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Re: Bella peed on my bed!
« on: November 03, 2006, 07:53:31 am »
I had dogs that would do stuff like that when they were mad.  Not pee on their stuff, but on mine.  I would go out of town overnight and it was like they knew when I was coming home because they would have used the bathroom all over the bedroom!  And the person who was letting them out for me would say "nothing was there this morning" and they never did anything like that when I was home!

Cats do that all the time if they're mad!

I've never had a dog blatantly pee on their own dog bed though, I don't get that!!
I don't get it either! She never pees in the bedroom, NEVER! She is not 100% housebroken yet but the bedroom is the only place she will never pee in. She sleeps in the bedroom on the floor. But her bed is in the living room. She only uses it for relaxation and ... potty as of 4 day ago!

Oh no, that's the worst!  McDougal used to do it quite often, especially if we changed the bed.  Yup, nothing like getting nice new sheets and a clean comforter and coming in two minutes later to find everything covered in pee!  He alsop did this to down comforters.  I think it was either b/c we told him to get off the bed so we could change it, so he was mad, or to get his scent on it.
I know for sure though that when McDougal is mad he does pee as revenge-on my husband's pillow!  We've gone through three, always after McDougal got in trouble or didn't get to do something!
On the plus side, he seems to have grown out of it (at almost 7 y/o)!
Oh, gosh! Now that you have mentioned changing sheets I realized that the first time she peed on her bad is after I washed her bed cover for the first time! Maybe she didn't like the detergent? LOL

I think maybe she was claiming the bed as hers but also maybe she had to go outside? but Gweck used to do this thing where we got him a new dog bed and he'd pee on it once and never again.  I think it's a claiming thing.  Good Luck!!!

Julie

It's funny but I was going to ask people about this. Lily had her dog bed for almost 2 months and didn't do anything with it until 4 days ago. We were playing and all the sudden she jumped on it and peed! I was shocked. I washed the cover, dryed it and put it back the next day. She was waching me putting it on and... 30 seconds later she peed on it again? How weird is this?

It does sound like she is claiming it.  Well, Bella doesn't need to claim MY side of the bed, because I'll never give it up! :D

So what should I do? Stop washing it? Why would she claim it? She is the only pet in the house and it's obvious that she has more stuff then I do... lol

My BPO does the same thing! She sleeps 10, 45, or 7 hour rides. I have to wake her up to go potty and she goes straight to sleep. I love it!
