Britz!

Nooooooo Lordy Lordy no you're not a horrible person!!  :o  My dad is just like your hubby, he hated having dogs inside (but when we were in Nigeria we had 16, all rescued dogs... huge garden, so lotsa space..). So naturally we couldn't have ALL of them inside, but the weather in nigeria is really good (hardly rains) and they had lots of space to run and play and loaadds of trees for shade. What my mom finally convinced my dad to do was to keep 2 dogs in the kitchen at a time, so she trained them to know who comes in by turn and the kitchen door was always open :D The 2 in the kitchen would NEVER dream of going further into the corridor or rooms, and the ones outside would wait patiently until their turn came to come in..

Here in my home now we have 4 dogs, 2 Rocky and Beau stay together all the time among us, and Sparky and Doggie (who always fight with Rocky, serious hate issues there...) stay in the back garden, but not allowed into the living room, but the kitchen door (adjoining the back garden) is always open for them so that whenver we're in the kitchen (and we're in the kitchen a LOT... i love to cook  8) :D) they can be with us, and also have appropriate shelter all year around.

That's why i suggested to you if your husband really is against the idea even after letting him read all this and still decides he doesn't like dogs inside you could always come to a compromise and get your rottie used to being among you in a certain room/s, and with the right training he'll know what the boundaries that you set for him are once you show him :) I have no doubts that he's a well-loved dog, and it's GREAT GREAT GREAT that you got him from the shelter... WAY TO GO GIRL!  :-*

OMG HOW CUTE IS SHE????  :D She looks almost EXACTLY like my newfie Beau!!! :) Same face same black coat same big soulful eyes... how absolutely GORGEOUS!! :) About the coat, Beau's tail always seems dry, and i'm not sure if he's shedding his puppy fur now (he's 4 months old...) but his soft cuddly plush-teddy-bear-fur around his neck, ears and back are also getting a littler drier and not so soft... will the softness come back to my little-soon-to-be-huge-softie??   ::)

Hello,

I'm afraid i have to agree with Jodi, Nicole, People whisperer, gr8dame, jacksmom, and all the rest who are for dogs being indoors. I don't want to reiterate all the points made, but just to give a small example:

our next-door neighbours rottie is kept out all year round and just 2 weeks ago a snake bit him and if it hadn't been for my mom who just happened to be in our garden and saw the snake and then a few minutes later realized that he was drooling too much and unsteady on his feet, he would have died. It was 6AM. He also gets very sick during winter (he has a huge dog house also, and a big garden and access to his food and water and a thick blanket), but he's always shaking so badly that at times i sit with him under the rain to keep him company.

As winter is pouring with rain half the time i cant' see how you'd be able to spend much time with him, and that'll be very hard on him being away from his loved ones. It's great though that you take him places with you, that's a plus, but really, think about moving him indoors, at least into the kitchen but not the rest of the house if your hubby is THAT uncomfortable with him being indoors. Just a thought. Ta.

Hello Rachel :) My name is Rachel too, i own a 6yr old German Shepherd Rocky, a 3 year old Shepherd mix Sparky, a mongrel Doggie, and recent addition to our family is Beau, a 4 month old Newfoundland adopted from the shelter where i live! I'm still pretty new here but i love it, everyone is so helpful, and Beau is my first BP so i'm asking a lotta questions and getting a lotta great replies :)

People PEOPLE ATTENTION!!

Because we've had a bombardment of bad horrible news... I finally have something GOOD to offer, small very small but still something good!!

Today our neighbours, twin girls about 12 years old, nearly bash our door down totally excited and happy: They nagged and nagged and nagged their parents until they agreed that they could adopt a dog from the shelter, AND THEY FINALLY AGREED!! WAY TO GO GIRLS! :)

They adopted a gorgeous retriever mix puppy, 4 months old, gorgeous face (and thus the name Beauty assigned to her!), all golden and brown and gorgeous and now clean and full of puppy fluff playing every single day outside on the street we live with the girls, their friends, and the other dogs in the area!

SO THERE'S SOME GOOD NEWS FROM MY SIDE OF THE WORLD... and i'm happy and THRILLED AND ecstatic to share it with you all, especially after all the sadness we've been having here... Small... but good news at least!! Hope it helps your spirits people! xxx

Jodi...

I'm very sorry for your loss. We went through something similar with our Shepherd, Blaze.. It was very sudden, and very heartbreaking, but as hard as it is at least you were there until the very last, loving and caring for Tisha and she knew it and felt it... Rest her Big Dane Soul... so so sorry...

Rachel.

Imani's Mom...

Terribly sorry for your loss. It's bad enough when a loved furbaby passes on at a later age but even harder when they are so young when it happens! I'm sure you gave her the best life you could despite all her health problems, and the important thing is that she KNEW you loved her and she loved you back, like all our babies do, and you were always there for her and you gave her the best of the best every single day... RIP.

Dear Jason,

I'm deeply deeply sorry for your loss. You did what you thought was best for him and i'm sure you made the right decision. These things are never easy but you stayed right by his side until the last second and that's what counts because right up til the last minute he knew that his buddy who he adored and loved and who loved him back all those years was right there next to him, always loving him and being there for him! You gave him the best life that you could and that's what counts. Be strong, Oreo, rest in peace big boy!

(Butts Mom: that poem made me cry like a frigin' baby!! Beautiful touching poem...)

Cazzie,

Ok good you've set my mind at ease concerning Beau! He is a little demon though and he's spoilt rotten and knows it! I do have pix but i can't seem to find a functioning usb to transfer the pix here! It's really frustrating as my both of my fiancees usb's are malfunctioning, and i can't seem to find someone with a compatible usb so that i can transfer the pix! Still working on it, tomorrow plan to take a coupla pix of him in the baby pool :) hehehe that should be fun!

Storm really is gorgeous, lovely name picked out as well! Love her colour, and she is going to be a mighty big dog!! :) Cute and cuddly in the pic where she was running to the camera she looked like a collosal teddy bear!! :)

I am giving Beau his supplements every day, as well as calcium and cod liver oil tablets. Do you think that we should up his meals to 3 times a day? He is quite lean, and though he limps at times he's more or less fully recovered (he's even sitting better!). When he first had the operation he couldn't sit like normal dogs do with both back legs bent fully, he'd outstretch the operated leg and lean completely on the good leg. Now it's more or less proportional but i feel that his good hip is slighly higher than his injured leg/hip... I'm hoping that with right amount of vitamins, swimming and walking, that the muscle will rebuild and the bone will regrow sufficiently enough for him to not limp.... We so want him healthy and happy (which he is, but more-so we hate it when he is in pain!).

Thanks for all your info... everybody on this site are lovely lovely and good good people, and just for loving dogs as they do i know that we all have a place in Heaven! :)

Wow, she really is gorgeous!! Love the fur! Beau is only 4 months old but seems to be losing his fluffy fur already! After seeing pix of Storm being only a month older than Beau i'm starting to think that maybe he's kinda small for his age?? His last weigh in was about 2 weeks/ 3 weeks ago and he weighed about 15kgs, is that too little? He has a very healthy appetite and he eats 2 times a day, morning and evening... evening main meal... ?

I'm just still a little perplexed about such big dogs... He definitely has grown in height though, but not as fluffy or as chubby as Storm..? Is that normal? Or does he need about a month or 2 to pack on a few more pounds and get a bit buffier? Or do you think it's cause of the trauma he suffered and malnutrition the first few weeks of his life and with the leg being broken twice and all..?? (by the way, he's sitting almost perfectly now and his limp is almost gone, but he still can't walk for long or else he spends the first few hours after he gets home whining and restless as if he's in pain or discomfort.. so we're walking him one day yes one day no for 10 -15 mins at a slow pace... and wading in the baby pool about 3x a week...

hey People,

Thanks for all the comments, it really gives me hope that there are still good people out there in the world, but as you all have said i just cannot see HOW  on earth people would want to see 2 animals fight to the brink of exhaustion if not death? I'll tell you one thing i have no squalms whatsoever watching boxers or men go at it, because they are making a CONSCIOUS choice... but to do that to an animal.. to keep them under such poor conditions, even refusing them the right of seeing a real vet... that's horrible. And as for the footballer Vick, he DEFINITELY isn't going to Heaven.I mean for cryin' out loud he's already making sh*tloads of money, why this? Why? Oh and and i agree about the "sorry starving kids" comment, because i feel the same way. Animals can't ask for food, they can't say where they hurt or why... all they want is to be loved and cared for and played with...It makes me angry and depressed when i read things like this, and it makes me even more depressed and angry when you realise that the people who are supporting this have kids... and they will have kids... and they will have kids... The only thing that i can hope for is that these kids that they have turn out a h*ll-of-a-lot smarter than their parents! Amen! :)
