General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Re: It's killing me!!!!!

Vanilla on the nose is a great trick I use @ shows all the time with Butler.  It only lasts about thirty minutes but it is completly safe and effective for short periods of time.

Between my Mastiff and my Basett hound I am cleaning gunk out of ears on a weekly basis.  I use a liqid once a week and I found a powder from Dr Fosters & Smith that seems to retard the growth of ear gunk (technical terms I know  :D)that I use as well.

FAQs about puppies / Re: New Leo owner - need help with biting please

I am a big proponent of the word off. Also if your pup is biting the wrong thing tell them off and give them an appropriate item (to raw hide etc..) to bite.  Off works better than "no" (IMHO)and it can have universal applications.  As stated by others, the behavior is fairly normal and with some consitent canine feedback your pup will be just fine.

My Dane did the same thing with interior doors on an infrequent basis. She also had plenty of exercise and and attention she just seemed to "snap every three or four years" She took down two or three over her 12 + years.  For her I think it became a compulsion.  Once she started and had a little opening in the wood it became necessary to destroy the entire thing.  Not unlike a kid & bubble wrap.

That poor pup will have  a complex if it is continually dressed in that garb ;)

Congrats she's cute.  I am sure she will drink when she settles in a bit.  Butler was the same way when I brought him home.

Bullmastiff Discussions & Pictures / Re: April swimming anyone?

Good to hear you are both OK.  Sounds like Phelan swims as well as my Bull Mastiff did.  15 Years ago I had to dive off a dock into early spring norther MN waters when she fell off my dock and into the drink at my cabin.  I am not sure what was greater, her fear or my shrinkage.   ;)

At 10 months your pup can go the distance but I would be cautiouse about jogging on a paved surface.  Its h*ll on a human's joints and dog's are no different.  Butler (16 months old Mastiff) has been getting walked twice a day since he was 8 weeks old.  Way back when it was around the block but today it is anywhere from 1 to 3 miles a crack.

Did you see the dogs or pciture of the dogs with blue eyes.  I have many pictures of my Mastiff when he was a pup and his eyes look baby blue, but in reality they were not.  The recessive gene associated with Danes & Blue eyes does not automaticaly equate to a hearing issue.  Odd;s are if the pup can hear when they are young they will not develope an issue down the road.

I have generally stayed away from getting a great dane with blue eyes, as in some cases it can indicate deafness.  However, can it be normal/safe for English Mastiffs or Mastiff/Great Pyrenees to have blue eyes?  I've seen some beautiful Mastiff and Mastiff mix puppies with blue eyes but am wary in case they will be deaf.

Also, if you could share your experience or site any sources that would be really helpful.  I'm not finding much info online on mastiffs with blue eyes specifically.

Thanks in advance for any input!

Remembering those no longer with us. / Re: Peppy Died This Morning

So sorry to hear of your loss.  I am sure he loved being able to have the quality of life you afforded him when he shared his life on this earth.  RIP Peppy

They made a "Hock Sock" for Voodoo (my Dane).  She had a lick granulome on her rear leg the latter part of her life. It did a great job keeping her (and Duke) off it when I was not around and shortly after starting to wear it it looked much better than it had in some time.

We have them at one of the schools I train @.  They are helpful with squirlier dogs.  I have never seen a mastiff on one but I see in their web page they show it.

Perhaps you should stop putting peanut butter on it ;D  Or am I the only one that has done that?

I will second the "snobby teenager" thought.  In my experince over the years with giant breed dogs, between 8-13 onths they can really start to test your patince.  I have told storeis about my Great Dane eating Mini Blinds or my Bull Mastiff eating redwood patio furniture.  Make sure the keep your pup active and do not reinforce the bad behavior.  She will come around in a short while.
