: Some people are so rude
: Blair August 28, 2005, 05:19:06 PM
We took Zeus and Grey to Petsmart on Friday. We were having a good time, al ot of people petting and loving on both boys. Until this one rude lady walks over to us and made a comment. We didnt hear her at first and my husband asked what she said. She looks at Grey and told we had no buisness taking him in public when we are starving him  >:( . My husband looked at her and her dog and said "No hes just not overweight like your dog" and we walked away. As we walked away Grey brushed up against her and left his long shoe string drool on her pants  :D. On a good note, there was one lady playing with both boys, and Grey drooled all over Zeus' head. She looks at Zeus and said "OOpps you have drool on your head". Reached down and wiped the drool off his head.

Grrr.  Some people are just awful.  The drool part is funny, though!  Hehe!  :)

Yeah, I've been told that before, and Gunther isn't even as thin as some young danes are.  I just try to explain nicely that when they are growing, not only do they grow so fast they can't keep weight on, but having too much weight on them is unhealthy while they are growing.  So far everyone has been satisfied with that answer.

We explained to her before my husband made that rude comment but she wasnt having any of it....All she said over and over again was we were starving him  >:(

I bet you guys didnt know that Danes dont come in Merles LOL I get that all the time. They get dane right and then add the what is he mix with. Then I have to explain to them that danes do come in other colors LOL We all need to have a school so we can teach everyone about our babies LOL
: Re: Some people are so rude
: Blair August 28, 2005, 05:55:51 PM
That was just too funny when Grey did that. It was like the whole time the lady was putting him down, he was sitting there making a HUGE shoe string drool just for her LOL

Well, I don't know if this is technically RUDE, because it was just a little kid that said it, and I don't think he meant to be hurtful, but it certainly left an impression on me...

When we lived in Michigan, we had Gwen and Ranger out for a walk in the neighbor hood.  A little boy (I have no clue how old - pretty young - not a toddler but nowhere near a pre-teen) who was outside playing came over to us and asked if he could pet them.  As he was doing so, he was asking us questions about the dogs - their names, if they were a boy or girl, etc.

Then he pointed at Cabo and said  "How old is that dog?".  We told him that he was about 12 or 13 at that time (we weren't 100% sure, because he was a shelter dog, and we had never known his real birthday).  Then he pointed at Gwen, and said "How old is that dog?".  We told him she was about 4.  Then he turned back to Cabo and pointed at him and said "THAT DOG IS GOING TO DIE SOON, ISN'T HE?".

Oh.  My.  God.  I, of course, immediately burst into tears and began sobbing on the street corner.  I eventually pulled it together enough to continue the walk, but I still couldn't stop crying....

Now I realize that the kid wasn't old enough to realize that his comment was going to be hurtful, and that he was probably just going thru the process of figuring out the numbers, and that Cabo was older than Gwen, and that he was just old enough to figure out how long dogs live, BUT STILL!!!!

Ugh.   :(

I've had people swear that Gunther has greyhound in him b/c that is the ONLY  breed that comes in brindle.  They obviously need to check their dog books again, b/c at last count I think I know of at least 15 breeds that carry brindle.  Unfortunatley, I'm not good at comebacks until about 5 minutes later.  I wish I could come up with some zingers like you guys.  Maybe we should have a thread with some posted, so I can keep a list with me at all times......... .......lol

I have people who refuse to come near Sanity because they are positive that he's a pitbull.  A really really really big pitbull.  In fact the day after I brought him home I took him to the kennel I worked at and this guy says "What's wrong with your pitbull's face?"  Come again?  For starters if he has a pitty face it's on the wrong dog.  I told him it was a Dane puppy and he's like "Sorry Honey Great Danes don't come in that color.  I raise pits and ONLY a pit bull comes in that color."  I just said "Oh my God, I'm so sorry, I didn't realize that you know EVERYTHING!"

And Marsi?  To make you feel better my little sister comes up to me a while ago and says "You're 22 right?" I said yes, and she said "The average human lives to be 88, so you're a quarter dead!"   :-X

Ha ha, Ang, that is so funny!  But, um, I've been meaning to ask - what is wrong with your pitbull's face?   ;D ;D ;D

Just a couple of weeks ago I had a lady in my pet food store ask "how my neighbors tolerate such big dogs"...I was totally confused & said, "What do you mean"...She paused for a moment & said, "My neighbors would never put up with it"...I still am not sure what "it" is...All the while she is holding a 7 week old Basset Hound...I am wondering how her neighbors will put up with the barking & howling...The bi**h didn't have a clue. >:(

LOL!  Well, this is getting pretty far off-topic, I guess, but that reminds me of a story.  I was in a school not long ago, and as I walked through the front office, I noticed a little boy looking at me very carefully.  When I was leaving, he stopped me very politely saying, "Excuse me, ma'am?"  I said, "yes?"  He asked, "Do you color your hair?"  A bit shocked, I responded, "Uh, no."  He then asked, "are you sure?"  I told him yes, I was sure, and if I was going to color my hair, I'd be careful not to leave these grey hairs showing.  He looked at me again, looking as though he was seriously pondering my response.  Then, he said, "Well, in that case, maybe you ought to consider it."
 :o ;D ;D ;D
Oh aren't kids cute?!?...NOT! :D

Sorry to hear that you had a bad encounter with a human being....but sometimes they just are poor excuses for living things. I detest people that make rude comments about Bear for any reason but what the lady said to you was just offensive. I am so glad that Mr. Grey got her slimed. Way to go!

Oh, the joys of Petsmart! People there are so weird sometimes.
I had a lady who told me what a shame it was that I didn't crop Earnest's ears- 1. he's not purebred, most people only get Dane because he's so big- he has a very Lab face, if you know Danes you can see he's not pure  2. I happen to like natural ears, and even if he was pure, he'd still have his ears.
I have had more than one person argue with me when they ask what he is- I say 1/2 Lab, 1/2 Dane, and they say "NO, can't be, he's.... I KNOW WHAT HE IS, I SAW BOTH HIS PARENTS.  He can't be Dane because he's merle, he can't be lab because he's not black, he must have some chow because his merle spots continue onto his tongue...
I gave up. Now when some one asks I tell them he's a rare Lochbuie Lurcher imported from England, very expensive.  Cracks me up when the know-it-alls are so impressed.... "Oh, yes, very fine example of the breed"...... LOL!!!

I love it!!!!...I've have people tell me Samson can't be a Pyr because he has color!...I used to try to explain that 65% or so of Pyr pups are born with color but only around 18% or so keep that color into adulthood...I gave up!!!...Now I tell them he's a polar bear hybrid & walk away & leave them thinking! :D

That's GREAT!!!
I have to wonder why some people show no hesitation at expressing their own opinions but are so closed minded to hearing someone elses.....espe cially when it's factual!
I've had people come up to me and make proclamations as to Daisy's breed.  I calmly explain that she's a Neapolitan Mastiff.
I've heard:
"No, she can't be."
"That's not how they look.  They are light brown with a dark muzzle and not wrinkled."
I explain that they are thinking of an english mastiff. They do not want to hear that at all.
My favorite is when someone asks about HIS weight or HIS age or HIS name.
I used to explain....now I just make up boy names.....Spar tacus is the current favorite.

I'm dreading the day that we get a Petsmart if all people are that ignorant, lol.
I don't know why, but I really get irked when people call Kallie a "husky." There's always someone going "Oh, she's SUCH a beautiful husky!"
I always have to explain that she's not a "husky" (I always wonder which kind of husky they are referring to), and that she's an Inuit dog/Malamute mix.

I also get the "wolf" one all of the time. One tourist kept swearing that Sher was a wolf. Oh yeah, he's a blond, floppy-eared wolf all right (sarcasm).
I also get people telling me that Ty is all sorts of different kinds of wolves (from Timber wolf to Red wolf). I try to explain that racers almost never breed wolves into their lines because they're too unpredictable, but "they must have bred one in anyways because he's 100% wolf."

Once we were taking Jacques in for a checkup at a new vet. The vet complimented me on how "beautiful your little poodle is."
I stared at the vet for a moment and said, "he's a Bichon."
Needless to say, we didn't go back.

We take Willow everywhere and probably 1 in 10 people say she is a dane...most everyone is just perplexed - i think it is the merle clr and the natural ears...At first it bothered me but now - oh well, I have just come to the realization that most people are idiots...They are always calling my black pom an baby chow or a mini chow....

Then you tell them he is a Vizsla and they look at you like you made the name up. ::)

If people are genuinely interested and ready to listen I will take the time and talk to them about my furkids. If they are just into being rude and opinionated I am just as rude back. I actually had a lady tell me that if I ate less I would be able to afford to feed Merlin more and he wouldn't be so emaciated. I told her "Gosh I guess it's a good thing that I don't give a f%^& about you or your ignorant opinion then, isn't it?" And walked away.

Some guy once yelled at me that just because a certain thorobreed(sp?)  dog (yes he said thorobreed dog) is supposed to be skinny to race that it does not mean that I should starve my dog to make him look like that. I did not understand what he meant at first but I figured it out once I got home I think he thought Spike was a greyhound and that I was not feeding him enough to keep him skinny on pupose. Little does the people that just because they are skinny does not mean they do not eat. Spike eats like a horse.

I hear ya there. I've had people tell me that they know of someone who has a black pyr. I tell them that pyrs are white and they continue to argue with me. I tell them it's probably a newf, but they just don't get it.

Kiahpyr,

I LOVE black pyrs.  Bear is a fine example of a black pyr.

Just kidding.  ;D

LMAO funny how some people just have to be right no matter what. They are the type that you say 2+2=4 and they swear up and down that no it's not.

We had the same "you cruel person!" about starving Madison (which was never the case) when she was a puppy... they never take in consideration what factors there may have been with the dog BEFORE you got it... such as:
a) she was emaciated when we adopted her YESTERDAY
or
b) she's actually a greyhound and SUPPOSED to be that skinny, and you would have known that if you hadn't opened your large and obnoxious mouth and come to ask about her instead.

And the latest?  A few Saturdays ago (before Moonshine was here) these people came in with their greyhound puppies (who were, actually, too skinny) and talked... they were nice people until the man pointed to the foster there named Brian and said, "See, now he's too fat, you can't even see his ribs."
Uh...
(I'm sorry... and you say you own these two GREYHOUND PUPPIES?  Did you even research them before you bought them? Or did you go to a race and randomly decide that they were the dog you wanted?)
I kept my mouth closed because I didn't want to get the CGA in trouble or anything, but I wanted to say to him  "Um... no...you're wrong... Brian got off the track last week and it TOO SKINNY... like your puppies... so you can sign them over and we'll find a nice home for them... namely mine."
I think they were judging the puppies weights on racers that they had seen and not an actual healthy weight for the pups... racers usually are at least 5 lbs under their correct weight... so those puppies needed WAY more food. (but other than that they looked well cared for.)

Don't you love it when people are too ignorant to listen to the facts unless it's their version? I LOVE it... really, I do... up until the point when I punch them in the mouth and hurt my poor little hand.  ;)

Okay... my tangent is done... and wether you could make ANY sense of that, I dunno... but hope you had fun reading it anyway!  :D

I get those comments all the time.  Klaus is a red Doberman and people have asked when he will "darken" to black (as in a previous post here).  When we first got him before his ears were cropped my own sister tried to tell me he wasn't full Dobie cuz his ears didn't stand up.

I get told all the time that my pug isn't a real "Chinese" pug cuz he's black instead of the common tan.  Try getting it thru their heads that the only pugs are Chinese pugs.

The funniest comment ever though was when I took two of the dogs to the vet at the same time.  The Doberman was 6 months old at the time and the min pin was 4 yrs old.  The lady in the waiting room actually asked me if the min pin was the Doberman's puppy!  She was pretty embarassed when I told her their ages.

I get comments all the time about Rica. I usually am nice and correct them as to the breed, however there are some that swear I am inventing the breed and refuse to be convinced. Owning a rare breed can be a bit of a trial, and most uneducated people go "IS WHAT A LABRADOODLE LOOKS LIKE", next sentence is "WHERE I CAN GET ONE?". Most people think I am making up the breed, when I tell them she is a CURLY COATED RETRIEVER, but give it up when I tell them she was a show dog and has papers to prove it. Another comment is that they watch the dog shows on TV and have never seen one, funny Rica's dad Dillion won Best of Breed at Westminster twice (that's the show they cite having watched). Usually though I end up spending five to ten minutes telling them that those mutts (labradoodles or goldendoodles) do not look anything like a curly and that with the mutts you do not know what you are getting in terms of coat or temperment. They may be very nice dogs, but for coat and temperent you are getting some mix of the two and only God knows which characteristic s will be expressed, (could well be the Lab coat and the poodle temperment).

My mil has a doberman without the ears cropped. She used to be involved in many dog associations and told me that they are getting away from cropping their ears. It was the first doberman that I saw without the ears done and actually asked if it was a purebred. She was. Silly me!!

You really don't mind the first question...I mean some people are just seeking information. It's when they then proceed to argue with you, and say that you are wrong, or proceed to tell you what you are doing wrong with your fit, shiny, smiling tail wagging companion. I had dobermans for 15 years, and several reds mixed into the bunch. Most people, even with the cropped ears assumed that they were chocolate labs. When I would correct them I got either the arguement (cant't possibly be a purebred, it's not black) or they backed away so fast they almost fell over. Backed away from the same dog they were just lovin on, that was loving on them. People are just too weird...Other than all of us of course.

We can relate about the rude comments!  The moment we got Bella the questions started.  "What breed is that? Sure doesnt look like a Newf, is that a lab mix?"  Bella is more flat coated for a Newf. People we come across seem to assume that all Newfs have the fluffy coat.  I could rant about all the stupid questions we get regarding her breed.  I love it when people respond, "Really? THAT's a Newfoundland? Hmm. Sure doesnt look like one  to me."  Obviously these people know much more about the breed than I anyway right? >:(
A while back we took the gang to the pet store. On our way out woman walks in the door.  She begins to ooh and ahh over the gang. She then asks what breed Bella is, because she knows Rocco is a Newf.  After we go into our explanation she says, "Well, I like the Black the one better than the brown one. He's cuter." >:(  I felt like making a mean comment to her but decided she wasnt worth my breath of energy ::)     Where do people get the nerve to make so many rude and insensitive comments?

Just the other day, we were asked if Bella was a Golden mix. Mike said he feels like giving them just as stupid answer by saying, "No she's a Chiuhua, and Rotti mix."

People are strange!
I've had folks walk up and start petting Tulsa, she's liking it, and then they ask if she bites!
When I say "Yes!"
They back away, Tulsa senses their fear, and bristles, looking around for the danger!
Don't they know that a dog has priorities!
Feed me, love on me, let me do my job!
I am more certain now than I have ever been, that dogs are the most noble, caring, intelligent, creatures that God ever created.
And that, we, as dog lovers, are blessed to have this knowledge.
I just hope that I can live up to my dogs expectations.

I totally agree. I think dogs are better than people and just by being near one it makes us better. Some people think that is strange that I feel that way but think about it They only know hate if they are taught to hate. They love unconditionaly . They will love you if you gain or lose weight, grow old, loose that really good job. I could not imagine a world without dogs.

I know about the correct color comments, just yesterday I brought my landseer newfie pup to work with me for a good bath and brush out when 2 of our customers, at different times, asked me what kind of dog he was.  When I said newfoundland they both replied aren't they supposed to come in just black.Grrr. Yeah I work here and groom your dog but have no idea what I am talking about when it comes to my own! Of course since I was at work I just grin and giggle a little and then reply "no actual they come in several colors black, brown, gray and black and white also know as a landseer, which is what I own."
My boss just laughed at me and shock her head.
