Saint Bernard General Discussions / Re: Who's dog is BIGGEST???
« on: August 20, 2006, 08:18:00 pm »
Wow! It's amazing how varied in size our dogs can be.  Brutus is definitly not the biggest either.  At 17 months he is 135lbs-140lbs.  I'm not sure how tall he is though.  How do I measure his height?  Is it the floor to his hindquarters?  shoulder?

I don't know the answer to your question but I can tell you that Brutus is always shedding!!  We need to brush him constantly or we get little rolls of hair blowing down the hallway.  I guess it's possible that they shed more in the summer as it's hotter...

Brutus is the same way!  I think Saints just shed!  We give Brutus an all over good brushing everyother day.  I am still vaccuming up hair everyday but it's worth it!  I think I might check out that shedding product though.  Has anyone else used it? Does it work?

Saint Bernard General Discussions / Overexcited about small dogs
« on: January 05, 2006, 06:38:59 pm »
Hi Everyone,
I have an issue with my Baby and I hope someone can give me advice.  Maybe I should be posting under training but, I think maybe other Saint parents have had the same issue.  Brutus is ten months today! He is a very happy go lucky dog that loves everything and everyone.  The problem is he has no concept of his size.  Whenever he sees a small dog he wants to play with it.  The problem is he's now 140lbs. with huge paws and a huge jaw.  He's a bit rough and mouths at them.  They get scared and the owners freak out thinking he's going to kill them.  The owners panic and usually pick up there small dog and this gets Brutus even more excited and he bounces at the owner trying to nip the small dogs tail.  He doesn't appear viscious.  Just excited and curious about the small dog.  At the dog park he always perfers to try and get the little dogs to play.  He doesn't really care so much about the middle to large dogs.  If we are out and about on leash and he sees a small dog I need to put him in a sit stay (which he does very well, although he howls and crys about it!)  If I don't put him in a sit stay then he tries to drag me over to see them.  We have a cat at home to and he's the same way with him.  Everytime he sees him he paws at him and mouths him.  He just loves him.  What I am afraid of is that he will accidently kill a small dog (or our cat).  What can we do to teach him that they are off limits or at least to be gentle?  Any advice would be great!

Helpful Groups & Dogs in Need / Re: My rescue journey into New Orleans

Great Job! Thank you for helping those poor animals.  We were watching the news cast on the horrible things happening down in New Orleans from our home in Canada.  We were horrified to see dogs curled up on top of houses alone and without help.  It's nice to see some good in a awful situation. Thanks again! :)

Saint Bernard General Discussions / When should I neuter Brutus?
« on: September 03, 2005, 08:52:15 pm »
Does anyone know when we should get Brutus neutured?  We are hearing conflicting reports.  Our vet says 8 months but people we have talked to say 6 months.  Other people say 12 months!  He'll be 6 months on Tuesday.  He is not showing any signs of being sexually mature yet. Any idea?

Just to give you a suggestion for what to feed your Saint. We feed Brutus Eukanuba Large Breed Formula.  It seems to be doing a good job.  And don't worry if your Saint is a little off on that weight chart.  Brutus was 10lbs. heavier at 4 months and 5 months then the chart indicated.  He's getting weighed tonight so it'll be interesting to see if he remains on the same curve.

We get the same comment everytime we go for a walk "I hope yu have a big house/yard" we now just say yes b/c we got tired of explaining that he's fine in our townhouse.  He gets 2 walks a day plus play time. And he has a small backyard he likes to lounge in.  He seems pretty happy. He's with me all the time anyway. What would he do with a big backyard? Some people are just ignorant.

I think because you have a female she will be smaller.  How much did her parents weigh?  I think Brutus was about 40lbs at 13 weeks. He will be 6 months on the 6th of Sept and he's pushing 100lbs.  He is not overweight at all, just a big boy.  His daddy was 200lbs.

Rottweiler Discussions / Re: Nice Rottweiler gone bad! Help!
« on: August 25, 2005, 12:58:45 pm »
This was a case where it was not my dog but I did know her very well.  I lived with her and was her primary caregiver for 5 of her 7 years.  She is normally leashed unless at a dog park.  It was just one of those fluke things where I opened the back of the truck to put her leash on and take her in the house (like I've done thousands of times no problem) and she bolted.  It was totally out of character.  She knows commands very well and is normally %100 under control.  Even the neighbours that came to our aid were shocked to see it was Lucy attacking.

He new the Rottie not the little white dog.  He watched at first and then copied the Rottie for a second b4 I could haul him off

Thanks for the advice.  When I picked up Lucy from the kennel he said she was fine.   The kennel had cement barriers inbetween and chain link fence as the front gate.  I will be calling the kennel tomorrow to ask who her neighbors were though.  I'm not sure if she would have listned if my dad had been there to call her off.  My husband showed up at the end of the attack and had to pull her off the other dog.  I still don't understand why after 7 years this would happen.

Brutus was off leash with a Rottweiller friend today when the Rotti visciously attacked a small white dog. ( the dog is ok. but in major shock).  Brutus didn't join in right away but when the white dog ran towards him he did grab at him and bite him on the neck.  We figure he was copying the rottie. Brutus has always been very kind but we're afraid him witnessing this act of violence might make him mean.  He didn't seem to understand it wasn't a game.  Any ideas where to go from here? I'm afraid to let him offleash.
