Great news everyone!!!! Vinny Dog has filled the adoption forms for Ranger the Pyr mix. Now we just need them to be aproved, She will be taking him back to Wisconsin with her, now I have a favour to ask can anyone help with the transport from Kentuck to Illinois, she can then pick him up in Illinois and bring him to Wisconsin.

This is strange, she did an online application, this can still work though, if we can get him to Illinois she can pick him up there.

We must have been doing it at the same time. I was approved while on the phone and they are expecting me to come get him early Tuesday morning.
I suppose I could go ahead and drive him north, can someone meet me somewhere on Tuesday? I need to look at a map!

Turns out Illinois is a huge state! I'll drive him up there, I'll borrow my dad's van which I will be needing for my move anyway, and that way Nigel can come along for the ride. I'll put my crate in the back just in case and then... ROAD TRIP!
Heck maybe Zoot wants to come too. Why not drive hundreds of miles with 3 dogs in the van?
: Re: Ranger's Rescue
: Nina July 22, 2005, 11:27:09 AM
That great Vinny is on line now, so I think that you guys can maybe make the arrangements. HEEEEE I am soo happy everything is working out and hey two BPO members can meet pretty cool.

NEWS FLASH...
... has offered to fund Ranger's care as long as I provide a foster home for him! This means he doesn't have to ride in the car for a million hours to go to Wisconsin! And Beth doesn't have to drive a million miles to pick him up! And the best part... updated pictures of him all the time while he lives with me!!
The Rescue will be providing his food, heartworm prevention, shots, dewormers, and flea control for him. And Ranger will be able to make a debut at the animal adoption expo in early August, where I will be able to assist people who might be interested in him!
I am looking forward to meeting him on Tuesday and I'll keep everyone updated. I am so happy for Ranger! It's amazing, who would have thought that one comment on a message board could start this ball rolling and save a dog's life!!! It's awesome!!!

Wooo hooo, you get to pick up Ranger tomorrow. I've had lots of emails from my Pyr email list talking about him, and they think that he is all Pyr, no collie what so ever. So you have to send us picks so we can get a better look at him  ;D I am so excited for you

Nina
: Re: Ranger's Rescue
: Kermit July 25, 2005, 11:30:51 AM
You know, I was thinking the same thing because wouldn't his face be so much more narrow if he was a collie mix? I can't wait to see him in real life! And dispel the mystery!
I am going to have to leave Nashville at 5 am! Ouch! I wonder what time Starbucks opens?
: Re: Ranger's Rescue
: Nina July 25, 2005, 12:28:18 PM
Your right he would have a smaller headand nose if he had some collie in him. Most people forget that not all Pyrs are white, they can have color in them. I have an old pic of Dilbert, but you'll notice they have the same color on there face.
: Re: Ranger's Rescue
: Kermit July 25, 2005, 06:14:03 PM
I used to think that all pyrs were solid white, because that was all I had ever seen. I also thought all newfoundlands were solid black. And I even worked in a pet store and a vet's office, I should have been more savvy! I guess we just didn't see a lot of those big fluffy breeds down in Georgia.
: Re: Ranger's Rescue
: GYPSY JAZMINE July 25, 2005, 06:20:25 PM
Sammy had lots of color as a pup but very light markings now...I think it's been said that only 18% of Pyrs keep their color into adulthood...Sa mmy at 5 & 1/2 months.

I grew up in Georgia but I moved up north (haha) to Nashville, Tennessee. It's odd, I think it's hotter here than it was in Georgia.
And tomorrow I'm driving up to Kentucky YAY!!!! I want to go to bed right now so it will hurry up and be morning.
: Re: Ranger's Rescue
: DixieSugarBear July 25, 2005, 07:27:47 PM
Get a good nights sleep, you are going to need it.  The week I had Sugar Bear I think I just stayed up most of the night so I could take him to potty, but really it was so I could watch him sleep. He was just a little doll.  I bet Ranger will sleep most of the time in your car.  So he will be ready to play when you get back.  Be safe on the road.

: Re: Ranger's Rescue
: Kermit July 26, 2005, 11:53:35 AM
Ok, here he is! Definitely a collie/pyr mix like they said! In person he has a long collie face, but the double back dewclaws to prove the pyrenees influence!
Everything was smooth sailing this morning, no car trouble, easy directions, easy pickup, and one gorgeous healthy dog!! No intestinal worms! No heartworms! Clean bill of health! YAY!!!! He was pretty nervous to come with me but he relaxed in the car and napped most of the way home. Then he threw up his breakfast in the back seat AS we were pulling up to my house! Poor guy!
Now he is in the kitchen, he is not sure he wants to meet Zoot and Nigel. He seems very sad and unsure, but it seems like he trusts me. When I am in there with him he is glued to me, and he sits when I tell him to. He's so sweet. Nigel really wants to meet him but Zoot is not happy as of yet.
Without further ado, Ranger!

What a sweetheart!...I am SO happy he is with you!!!...As far as his nervousness, beyond everything being new to him, Pyrs are aloof dogs to start with...If there is anything that is not as it should be they pick up big time on it...So, everything being new to him in his mind probably equates to everything not being quite as it should....He'll come around with patience & love of which I am sure you have plenty for him!...Please give Ranger a big ol' pat & "good boy"! from me & Samson!

Quick question for you, does Ranger have double back dew claws?  I have always been told that is a way to tell if a dog is a Great Pyrenees. I would like to know if a Pyr mix also has double back dew claws of if it is just full Pyrs.

I am so glad he's out !  How are the other two Pyrs doing ? Anyone know?

Moose is supposed to be a Newf/Great Pyr cross and he has the double back dew claws. So I learned something new today as I didn't know that was a Pyr thing. That's cool !

: Re: Ranger's Rescue
: Viney Dog July 26, 2005, 07:41:29 PM
Ranger is absolutely beautiful! What an exceptionally sweet and gentle face; just like a Pyr. I am so relieved the trip went well with the exception of him leaving you a present in your car.  I am sure the drive to your place was about enough, as the drive to Wisconsin would have been very, very long for him.  Your other babies will come around; this is a very new experience for all three of them, so adjustment will be necessary but I am sure will happen very quickly.  It is great he will have a warm, safe place to sleep tonight, and I will feel better knowing he is out of the shelter and not all alone wondering if he will have a home.  Best wishes on the new member of your family! With much gratitude to you for opening your heart and home.
: Re: Ranger's Rescue
: Kermit July 26, 2005, 07:56:56 PM
Here's how things are going after having him for 8 or 9 hours now. He hasn't had a single accident in the house (more than can be said for Nigel today). He LOVES all the dog toys that are all over the place. I introduced all the dogs together when everyone seemed really happy I had just come in from the grocery store. They were all very nice to each other. Lots of happy sniffing. A few growls from the new guy but I think he was a little overwhelmed. Then he relaxed and now seems comfortable, he is just chewing away on a nylabone! Boy does he stink and he needs a serious bath but he was just neutered yesterday so he isn't supposed to get wet for a week! Yikes! But he is cute anyway and he's just going to have to stay in the kitchen until I can bathe him.
Here are pictures!
Zoot and Nigel aren't sure if they want a brother...
: Re: Ranger's Rescue
: DixieSugarBear July 26, 2005, 08:14:49 PM
Try putting a little baby powder on him.  You can also rub him down with a dryer sheet.

Lisa
: Re: Ranger's Rescue
: Kermit July 27, 2005, 09:25:14 AM
I'll try that dryer sheet thing. I can't wait to give him a real bath, though, I just found two ticks on him and more flea dirt than I have seen in years!!
Today he and Nigel have become great pals. They have been playing and hanging out together all morning. Zoot still has no interest whatsoever.

I think Ranger wants a new name. I found out that "Ranger" what his previous owners named him, and honestly he doesn't answer to it anyway. Between that and there being a couple other "Ranger"s on this board, I think I'm going to give the guy a new name. For a new era in his life. He is such a gentle sweetheart. I wish everyone could meet him, and see what a fantastic guy he is. And OH the white hair is flying all over the place! Ha!

: Nina July 27, 2005, 09:40:11 AM
OHH he looks soo happy to be with you. That is soo wonderful. Have you thought of a new name yet?? The way that he was chewing on the bone is the way Dilbert does too, hmm wonder if that is a Pyr thing, Dilbert will sleep like that too until he really gets comfy then on his back he goes.

Is he still sticking to you like glue?
I can't believe his previous owners neglected him so bad!!! He is soo sweet, if he was with me I would not be able to let him go!

: Kermit July 27, 2005, 11:16:09 AM
Wow... I'm liking all of these suggestions... I really haven't decided on a name yet. I'll try a few on him and see if they fit. MacBeth is really cool!
I am telling you, this guy so far has an amazing personality! I just can't imagine what about him "didn't work out" with his previous owners, unless they just didn't want a dog in the first place. Boy, they don't know what they gave up! A minute ago he met my boyfriend's little terrier and they hit it off right away. I think the growling yesterday was because too much was happening and he felt insecure. He has been awesome today and just wants to follow me around and see what indoor life is all about. When I haven't been with him he just lays down in the kitchen and plays with a toy.

Here is a picture of him from when I first put him in the car yesterday. He was like, "ok, I guess I'm coming with you!"

OK, I think I have a new name for him and nobody is allowed to laugh!!! I am calling him Sunshine Bear!!! It fits him perfectly! And I know it is cheesy, but I have a motive here. I was hanging out with him today and brushing him, and I suddenly had this clear vision of him being in a family with kids who loved him so much, and he was an important part of their lives. I think this guy wants some kids to play with!! So, I am going to do my best to appeal to some youngsters at the adoption day event. I know everyone wants me to keep him, and he is awesome, but I am not going to have kids just for him!!! Seriously, a good dog like this doesn't come around too often and he is so so gentle, he deserves kid-love. So I'm going to get him a bandanna with sunshines on it, and honestly when I started calling him Sunshine Bear it made me smile and it made him smile too! Well, ok, he was already smiling anyways!  ;)

SUNSHINE BEAR!!

(sorry I know I am loony)

Holy cow this dog is perfectly crate trained! Not a single accident in the house! He is so happy and he and Nigel and best pals and it is fantastic! Just an issue at my house with the neighbor, and so I can't let them run around out in the yard (I share a fenced yard with the lady downstairs) so I moved everybody to my boyfriend's house. No fence, and they are getting more and more hyper! Thinking about taking Nigel and *Sunshine Bear* to the dog park today to get rid of some of this energy!!!
Next week we'll move into our new place where they will have a wonderful huge spacious yard to play in. YAY!

I LOVE HIM!!  He reminds me of my Oasis - on steroids!! He is beautiful and you are making such a mature decision to find him a home with kids to spoil him. Plus, that frees up your foster space again so you can rescue another one!

By the way, I e-mailed your new landlords and they are sending me 200 free spay/neuter stickers from Earthdog to put in our "doggie bags" for our dog parade in October.

They are awesome!! Boy, did you luck out.

WOW!  I finally found this topic and I'm thrilled to see 'Sunshine Bear'!  He's totally beautiful!!!  What a terrific foster mom you are!  You are all awesome for saving these guys from that miserable place.  Never again will I hesitate if I see one in need, I know now that you guys are here and it doesn't matter that I'm in Florida!  I honestly didn't think my initial posting to save them would turn out like this!  WOOOOHOOOO to everyone of you involved!!!!!!  CLAPS HANDS!!!!!!!!!!!

: Re: Ranger's Rescue

Ahhhhh, yes this is a great dog folks. My boyfriend and I were petting him last night and we just could not come up with any reason why someone would have abandoned this dog like they did. He is a special guy and I am so thankful we were able to save him.
Today I took Nigel and Sunshine Bear to the local dog park, it was a cool breezy day (compared to lately) and no one was there except us. So the dogs just ran around and played and had a good old time. It was beautiful to just watch them run together. Sunshine Bear is a gorgeous dog. I think he is going to be one popular pooch on adoption day!

Wow jjfritsche, that's awesome about the spay/neuter stuff! It is really true, the Earthdog folks are such good people and I feel really lucky we are going to be renting their house! It is such a cool place and perfect for dogs! When we first visited the house, there were dog beds everywhere that they were filling with stuffing, they really do everything out of their home so that they can be with their dogs!

Sorry I can't post any pictures of the fluffball right now, I am on my boyfriend's computer and it is a macintosh and frankly I don't know how to use the dang thing!

Thanks for everyone's support and kind words, I will make sure and tell Sunshine Bear how much everyone loves him!!!

Wow!...Sunshine Bear has a whole lot more pyr in him than I could tell from other recent photos...What a tail!..lol...I bet his Pyr/Collie temperment is way wonderful!...Congrats!...P.S...Are you keeping him? ;) ;D
: Re: Ranger's Rescue
: Kermit August 02, 2005, 07:43:52 AM
His temperament is pretty amazing. He is pretty cool, but asks for affection when he wants it, and BOY is he protective of me when I walk him outside!!! He really thinks of himself as a guard dog! He listens very well, I think he is very intelligent. But very playful too. He is such a special guy.
As far as keeping him, I am letting the forces of the Universe decide! I am taking him to adoption day on the 13th, and I would love to see a nice family adopt him. But I am not going to let any old person off the street take him home! If I don't have a good feeling about someone, they are not getting this dog! I might even require a home check. He can live with me as long as he needs to, as long as it takes for him to find his right family. I really don't know how it's going to end.
We are still working on moving, but the new place is such a dream! Can't wait to take pictures of all the boys playing in the back yard!!

Wow, it does my heart good to see Sunshine Bear in all these photos!  He looks SOOOO happy!  I wish so much I could take him myself  :'(  What a lover boy he seems to be.  God willing, one day I'll own my own house and will no longer have a landlord that dictates how many pets I'm permitted to have.  My poor husband better look out at that point, I can see it now...  A Pyr, a Saint, a Newfie...  Mind you, just to keep my Aussie and (sshhhh I'm whispering this) my Chihuahua company... HA HA HA HA!!!  My hat is off to you doghealer!!!  Awesome job!!!
