: NDR- Pregnancy question
: mama23+pyrs2 September 11, 2007, 05:41:13 AM
Have any of you Moms at anytime during your pg's had swelling in your leg/ankle/foot that was just on one side and not the other? This is what's been going on with me the last few days and it's awfully horrible looking and terribly tight and uncomfortable. It's all in my right ankle and foot, majorly more than the left. I called my Dr. yesterday about it and they just asked about pain or redness..indic ating a blood clot..which I don't have any of that. The nurse suggested cutting back on salt and hydrating. I drink a ton of water all day and if it's a sodium thing, why on one side? Anyway.. just trying to comfort myself until I can call back tomorrow and get an answer as to why this would happen.

Been reading too much online and scaring myself so much I start shivering. I called and talked to hubbys mom who works for an OB and was a L&D nurse for years..she doesn't know what it would be either. I'd post a pic but it would gross you out, seriously.

Oh and the past 3 days I've made sure to sleep on my left side to get things to work optimally and decrease the swelling but it doesn't seem to do a whole lot. I've got that foot elevated now though. Yuck. :(

Never had this happen before. Sorry! I've had major swelling in both legs and ankles, but not just one. Its totally weird. I can't imagine why sodium would only affect one side, either.

yea i sometimes had it a lot worse in one than the other. my OB just said to drink lots of water and sit with legs straight propped up in front of me. it helped a lot with it

Thanks Cori. Feels better to hear it happened to someone else and was normal, because I haven't been able to find anyone that can relate to it. My friends and family that saw the picture were like, something has to be wrong and I was really scared going to sleep last night. :'( I wish I knew what in the world would cause such a thing. I am the type of person that needs logical explanations before I can accept things ya know? Haha it's very hard for me not to get them.

I slept in longer than I normally do- about an hour longer and I slept with that foot up and on my left most the night, it has definitely gone down since last night but of course still doesn't look like my foot. I assume if it were something serious, the swelling wouldn't subside at all.

I will try to sit with it propped up like you say whenever I'm sitting and see if it helps. Thanks. :)

I haven't had any swelling, but I read in one of my books that if the baby is resting more to one side, it can cause fluid retention on that side.  I'm also thinking that it isn't anything too serious, since the swelling went down some overnight.

Hopefully you have some answers soon!

Really? See that's what people have been guessing, I just could find nothing about that online when I search. That makes sense though and I'm glad you read that somewhere. The little bugger needs to find a new position, but since he's been head down for a couple weeks, I don't think he can help where he's at. OH well, guess I won't blame him. ;)

Thanks for posting that, makes me feel better.

I just sent you a PM.

I had the same thing you are describing at about the 7th month.  It was a blood clot in the back of my knee.

It would decrease a bit when I wasn't on my feet but one leg was huge and the other fairly normal.  No pain, no redness, just one leg was way bigger than the other - I went to emerg and they gave me a blood thinner shot, next morning the leg was normal.  I had to take thinners for the rest of my pregnancy and all through the next.

Don't let this one go........get to the doctor ASAP!!!!!!

doesn't sound fun at all  :-\  i can't eat a lot of salt at all when i'm preg. or i bloat up and swell up like a balloon.  i hate it, but i normally don't eat extra salt either, so i'm used to it.  until i just "have" to have it.

i hope they can tell you something!  i know when i had tristan, my leg swelled up horribly for a bit, and i had pin and needle feelings in it, but it was just fluid accumulation.  but that was after i had him.  anywho.  let us know!

modified b/c i couldn't spell "or"...  go figure

I don't have much to add - I had very swollen ankles and feet when I was pregnant it was something called PUPP but it also came with tiny hives (thousands of them) my legs felt like they were on fire - so since you didn't mention itchy skin I doubt it is that

I just wanted to let you know that we are thinking of you and hope you get answers at the doctor - if you don't get answers keep pushing only you know what is right for your body.

Well that was a waste of a 45 min drive. The Dr. had left 2 hours ago (they told me that but I was hoping it was for lunch), so the nurse took my BP which is fine and checked my weight. She just told me that she's seen worse and normally, I would have some kind of pain or redness, streaking or something. I told her that I KNOW that doesn't always happen and it really concerned me. She said the tingly feeling could just be from the swelling..but that she couldn't tell me it's NOT a clot, but it's unlikely. Umm.. ??? but to keep a close eye on it, to let her know if I develop any pain or redness or if the swelling stops going down. She said it was a good sign it goes down at night.

Well, I'm just not put at ease of course, so I'm just gonna head into the ER tonight if it gets as bad as it's been and let them look at me. As much as I hate the ER, I know they won't just tell me to go home. Just really sucks..I wish they were more cautious at the Dr,'s and I'm surprised they aren't.

Hmmm, it's good that it's not likely to be a blood clot, but I think that you're right to watch it and go to the ER tonight if it's bad again.  I read an article on cnn or something recently that said that you usually get better care in an ER than in a dr's office.  I know that was the case for us a yr or so ago when we took our son to the ER.  They had all the equipment on hand to do all of the tests that he needed immediately.  If we'd gone to the dr it would've taken much longer to get the scans and all done and time can be critical.  Try to take it as easy as you can (did I hear you say "humph"?  ;D), or as easy as possible for a mom of little ones.   ;)

I can tell you what, I am sick of worrying about so many things. I really need a break! If it's not Yukon it's me, if it's not me it's something else (I found out a few days ago my cat has some type of worms now!, lovely?) And I honestly just don't need the worry anymore, it's taking it's toll on me. Last night I rolled up blankets under the foot of my mattress to elevate it, reminded me of a hospital bed haha but anyway..it was terribly uncomfortable but I awoke looking at a foot that hasn't looked that normal in a very long time. My legs were also smaller than I've seen them in probably weeks. So.. my MIL thinks I should still call the Dr. back today and tell him what I did and that it helped etc..make sure he is okay with not seeing me. I honeslty would rather wait until tomorrow to see how much better it is today/tonight. It never got nearly as bad last night as the previous nights BUT, I still had pitting edema.

Right now though, I've got no puffiness to push in with my finger, so that has to be a good sign right? It's so hard trying to make decisions based on so many factors. I've dealt with the Dr.s office now on 3 seperate occasions about this and they don't have a lot of concern, so I'd rather not deal with them again today..especia lly if my foot looks normal today.

Ugh, sorry to ramble.

So glad the swelling went down!!!!!!  Sounds like you should be putting your feet up more often (sounds like a good excuse to me!  LOL).  Hope things settle down for you and everything gets back to some seblance of normality quickly!  Feel better soon!

Thanks, I feel a bit more relieved today seeing it that much improved- hopefully not wrong of me to do. My MIL did tell hubby that I need to stay the hel* off my feet after seeing the pics I sent her. Maybe SHE actually got through to him. I love how he tells me that all the time 'put your feet up babe'..'stay off your feet today babe'..easier said than done with 2 babies running around and a 3rd I need to fetch from school. If he is here, does he make me stay off my feet? No and if I do, well the house goes to pot. Men!

your hubby and my hubby MUST be related!  i told him i was tired and needed to get a little extra sleep.  his answer?  "but HONEY, you slept until 9 this morning!"  (mind you i went to sleep at like 2 and naturally, being this far along, I'M TIRED!  anywho.  i'm glad the swelling went down, maybe you should tell him  you have some "meeting" to go to and take your oldest with you to a hotel and just have fun and CHILL!  haha

Well after elevating the foot of my mattress Thurs night, the swelling was almost completely gone the next morning..I've been sleeping on it that way since and the swelling hasn't even come back during the day which is sooo weird! I'm NOT used to looking at normal feet/ankles. BUT, yesterday I started to get a pain in my thigh that persisted throughout the day so by last night I decided to call my Dr..then head into the ER to be checked. They ran a dopper ultrasound on all the veins in the leg and found nothing, YAY. So, I can finally rest my mind that it's okay and don't have to worry about a horrible blood clot. One less worry, always a good thing. :)
