I would have totally freaked out too. I hate snakes anyway, but knowing what you've beent through makes it worse. I'm so glad Dixie and you are okay. I'm so proud of her for saving her pack.

HOLY COW Lisa!  My goodness that little girl of yours sure is earning her keep around there! :o

I'm glad to hear that Dixie, Sugar Bear (and you of course) are all alright after this ordeal!  I am absolutely terrified of snakes, I would have killed it too :-\

Oh yes Rosie was there.  You know when we went on our walk this morning and they were playing in the lake.  I was thinking is there anyway I would stop them from being able to do this (play as much as they want outside).  There is "NO WAY" I would take that away from them.

Don't you just love it when your guard dog actually guards you?

I'm so impressed.  Not that I would ever want to be in that situation, but I love the way Dixie kept you from going any further.

Dixie's the bomb!

Today it was a bee on the floor of the shop. I knew from the way she was barking that there was something going. She was fine with me killing that one.

Just what I need a mongoose!

You DO.  And in fact, they're quite good pets.  Kipling's Riki-Tiki isn't an exaggeration at all.

My dad had one when he was in the AF, stationed in Japan in the late 50's.  He actually came with his apartment--Lou had been a roommate to a long line of different non-coms who'd passed the apartment on as they were reassigned. Dad hadn't been there a month when Lou killed one a habu just outside the front door. Dad was VERY fond of him, and was really, really mad when he couldn't bring him home when he was discharged.

God knows I'd have loved to have a mongoose to take camping with us in rattlesnake country when I was a kid!

If you've had 2 snakes in the lake this close together, it sounds like you've got a nest of them somewhere.  It might be worth finding a herpetologist to come out and survey the area and see if he'll take them away if he finds them!

Or you could just see how difficult it might be to get a mongoose, who will eat them up for you. (You could snuggle a mongoose. ;))

It would be great knowing I had something that would kill them.

I now feel your pain. Kiah & Kitana took on a possum that came into our yard. Luckily my hubby was able to get the dogs away. The girls did get a few nips in on the possum. He saw some blood on his tail, foot & ear. They looked minor and the possum did walk away. I was so freaked out!

I can now relate...we have a HUGE snake living in our backyard/barn.  I haven't found it yet...Bella chased it away.  The trail it left was massive for something that is living in a hole.  What fun...   ::)  And Baloo, who stays in the backyard all day is showing signs of deafness and blindness.  Just what I need is for him to get bitten....

Oh no sugar...He's in the backyard!  The snake I mean!  Found the exit hole to the tunnel.  I think the snake is also getting free eggs so he has to go because of the chickens too.
