Newfoundland Pictures / Newfies Playing Soccer at Carmel Beach
« on: September 26, 2005, 11:16:35 am »
Ok, FINALLY!!  After, oh, 5 months I finally got around to posting the Newfies at Carmel Beach.  Yogi, Bear, Drake and few others all got to play in the surf and Drake of course went after a guy's soccer ball.  He was a good sport and we all had fun.  Mia's laughter is the best part.  Hope this works and thanks to you all who pointed me in the right direction, i.e. youtube.com

Collars, crates, & other cool things / Dog Fur Sweater
« on: September 25, 2005, 11:17:14 pm »
Has anyone ever thought about making a sweater out of their dog's fur?  We get so much fur out of just one brushing of Drake and I was thinking, this stuff is pretty thick and soft and might be good material to weave with.  My wife thought I was weird so I dropped that idea.  But then we've had several strangers on the street suggest the same thing to us, so now I'm thinking about it again.  How could I go about doing this?  I think it would be a neat thing to do and be a great thing to have when Drake is no longer with us. :'(  I don't want to think about that day but it's going to happen and it would be good to have something physical to remind me of the best dog I could ever have wished for.  Do I just contact a local weaver?  Would the fur have to be mixed with wool?  Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated.

Newfoundland Discussions / Does your dog do this too?!!
« on: September 15, 2005, 10:31:18 pm »
Ok, my dog is a dork.  Many mornings I wake up and I look on the floor and Drake is on his back with his legs in the air!  It is so hilarious, my wife and I laugh and laugh, it's actually a good way to start the day.  Why do they do this?  Are they airing things out?  Stretching?  Does it just feel good?  It kind of like how some dogs lay on their belly with their back legs flat on the ground.  Someone, please inform me!  I gots ta know! ??? ;D

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Newf/Pyr/Saint/Leon Traits
« on: September 14, 2005, 03:29:57 pm »
Not to be inclusive of other large breeds but these 4 breeds seem so similar in many ways, yet each seem have their own specific traits.  Each dog is different, but I do see common things in dogs of each breed.    From what I've seen from Drake and other Newfs, they are basically workhorses.  They live to work or play with their humans and to constantly be by their side.  Makes sense that Lewis and Clark brought Seamen along for the big trip.   And as sweet tempered they are, they can be very agressive if they need to be.  Drake and Yogi both stand at attention when strange adult humans or animals are nearby, but soften when we say it's OK.  And all Newfs seem to know to be gentle around small children and the elderly.  I'd like to hear about the specifics of the other 3 as I know little about them.  Does the Leon take on it's own traits regardless that it is made up of the other three?  Do Saints try to save you whether you need it or not?  Do Pyrs need to be bleached or they turn yellow.  Maybe these are all generalities and I'm wrong.  :-[ All comments and info would be great!

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Labor Day in Mendocino
« on: September 08, 2005, 03:08:09 pm »
Sarah, Drake and I went on our annual trip to Mendocino with our friends and their Snauzer Mix named Paris.  We have been renting the same house for the last 5 years.  It is a little slice of heaven on Earth.  The following are some pics I took and most are around the house property.  So many photo ops, I was cracking up while taking the one of Drake, Kristi and Paris passed out on the couch.  There are a few from the Blue Ox Beer Festival that is part of the Paul Bunyan Days celebration in Ft. Bragg, the oldest festival on the West Coast.  The one of Drake with the beer was taken by lots of other people as well.  The last one was during some wine tasting on the way home.  Most of the wineries welcomed Drake which was really nice, but not a surprise.  Who could say no to a Newf?!!  He got molested by lots of buzzed wine "tasters".  We can't wait until next year!!! ;D

Food Discussion & Information / Doctoring up Kibble
« on: September 08, 2005, 10:03:11 am »
Because we love Drake so much and we want him to eat well, we chop up a slice of lunchmeat or left over steak or chicken and put it in some warm water and then mix it into his Kibble.  Sometimes we just put a little warm chicken broth in.  He loves it and now wont eat dry kibble unless he is absolutely famished.  It helps in getting him to eat his vitamins we put in his food as well, otherwise he picks them out.  Does anybody else do this?  Or at least doctor up their dog's food?  When we travel with other people and their dogs, they have to do the same for their dog because we do it for Drake.  Their dog will try to eat Drake's food if they don't and Drake is VERY protective of his food.  Fair is Fair!!!  I'm curious to hear other people's concoctions.  Some of our friends have had to continue doing this afterwards because their dog has been converted. ::) ;D

Helpful Groups & Dogs in Need / Katrina Donations via J&J
« on: September 07, 2005, 09:38:28 am »
My wife works for Ortho Biotech which is owned by Johnson & Johnson.  J & J will match people's donations so, if you donate $100, J&J will make it $200.  I thought I would let everyone out there know about this.  If you know anybody who works for J&J, hit them up.  You have to write them a check and then it will be sent to J&J and they will double the amount to be donated.  If anyone is interested in this, let me know.  This isn't a scam, we have done this several times in the past, for 9/11 and for the Tsunami.  It's a good way to get more money for disaster victims, humans and animals alike.  :)

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Messed up story
« on: August 25, 2005, 11:52:54 am »
You know, just when you think you've heard it all when it comes to animal cruelty, you come across a story like this.  I read this on Drudge report this morning and the visions that come to my head are sickening.  Does the rest of the world just not care about animals as much as we Americans do?  The commercial fishing industry is going to destroy the Oceans and Rivers of the world and do horrible things like this in the process.  At least an obscure actress are trying to shed some light on it..... :'(

Hey guys, check it out!  This movie is coming out soon and there's a Newf in it!  Looks a little different than the typical Newf, but maybe it's a mix.  Cool to see, I saw a big billboard with this poster on it and I almost got in an accident.  Here's some links with pics:

Meet & Greet BPOers / BPO at SBC????
« on: July 20, 2005, 09:42:45 am »
Hey all, I remembered this promotion and thought I would share it with you all.  The San Francisco Giants are going to have their annual "Dog Days of Summer" game next month.  Yep, you can bring your dog to the stadium to watch the Giants kick the Astros butt (sorry Houston BPO).  Imagine if BPO came as a group, all those big dogs yelping it up for the Giants.  The only issue with this is the date, August 6th!  The same day as the Fort Funston get together, Oh well!  People can still go I guess, check out this link for info:

http://www.societydog.com/events/SF%20Giants%2005/Giants05.htm   or you can go to the Giants website and get tickets:  http://www.sfgiants.com

I'm sure this is going to be a blast, I have always wanted to take Drake to a game.

Newfoundland Discussions / Love Stingy Newf
« on: July 19, 2005, 10:31:33 am »
Sarah and I are so frustrated with Drake.  He is so stingy with his love, he never gives us kisses unless we have been gone for a while.  Then its one little lick on the face, if we're lucky, and that's it.  Even after we had been gone to Fiji for two weeks, we got home and Drake was really excited to see us and gave a few licks, but that's it.  HE IS SO FREAKIN' LOVE STINGY!!!   He wanted to play ball, but forget hugging or nuzzling. Yogi gives lots of love licks, so I know it's not a Newf thing.  We try forced love on him and sit nose to muzzle with him and all he does is grunt and turn his head.  ARRRRRRRRRRRR!  He's just not very needy and not very affectionate I guess.  Many dogs won't leave you alone, but not Drake!  I think it's so frustrating because Newfs are so huggable.  Does anyone else have this problem?
