: Introducing Angus!
: spikey70 November 13, 2005, 01:51:47 PM
Hey all, this is Angus!  Our new addition American Mastiff from Flying W Farms in OH.  He just made it home Saturday night and has already stolen our hearts.  He is 9wks & about 20lbs of puppy love.  I'll post more of him later

He's sooo good lookin'!!!  What's the difference between an American Mastiff and an OEM?
: Re: Introducing Angus!
: spikey70 November 13, 2005, 02:04:58 PM
Please do not let this thread about my new pup get to dramatic (you know who you are reading this), but the American Mastiff is a relatively new breed (about 25yrs running).  Not AKC recognized, but started as a cross between OEM and Anatolian.  Pretty much looks just like OEM, but for the most part has tighter bottom lip eliminating SOME of the excess drool.    Again, I don't want my happy announcement thread to get dramatic.  I know a lot of people have VERY intense convictions about this breed.    Most important to me, he is a loving sweet happy pup!

Well, I agree!  Very good looking and sweet.  I am owned by a Leonberger -who is a mix of a St. Bernard, Newfy and Great Pry so no judgement here.   ;D :D

I love the color ... almost blonde.  :)  and of course he's at that tiny phase that just makes you want to squeeze his cheeks and hug him way too tight.

I saw his pic off on the latest member blip.  He is too cute, but I am a sucker for pretty much any mastiff type dog.   ;D  Can't wait to see more pics.

And I love the name Angus.

My name is Chris, and I have a husky/shep female Keiko, and a great dane pup Gunther.  Welcome to BPO.

Seriously, you should get that fella an agent right away! I see a male modeling career in his near future!!!

I think American mastiffs sound like wonderful dogs, I have only heard great things from people who have adopted them. I hope no one here ever judges your decision to own a more recently developed breed. They all start somewhere! :D

Welcome!

Thanks to everyone for all the kind words about my new little man.  He went for his first visit to our vet today.  He received glowing reviews (hips and all!), so we were very excited.    I think the only trouble we may have with him is I think he knows how cute he is...  :)

What a doll!! Congrats on your new puppy!

I have never met an AM you said its a mix of OEM and Anatolian. Do they tend to take after one breed more then the other in temperament? or is it luck of the draw?
: Re: Introducing Angus!
: spikey70 November 15, 2005, 09:04:38 PM
Regarding temperment, after speaking with and reading threads from MANY MANY AM parents, they all predominately take after OEM's (very good natured, laid back and loving), with a touch more on the protective side as they get older (the anatolian in them).   As I understand (and please any AM Breeders reading correct me), the LONG AGO final split of the breeds ended up around a 75/25% split favoring the OEM's.

Anyway, after about 4 days with him I am completely smitten.

He is just the cutest!!!
 ;D
I have one at 14 months and now I want another!  They are like potatoe chips..

You will be thrilled with the friend you have, the main key is too socialize him early and introduce him to as much as possible.

Congratulation s!! I know it was along wait.
: Re: Introducing Angus!
: Proliant November 20, 2005, 01:02:23 PM
1/8 Anatolian and 7/8 OEM. The last outcrossing was about 7 generations ago (as I have been told by breeder).

It's nice to see another AM. What a beautiful boy. I predict that you will continue to be smitten for a very long time!

Please give him a big hug from us and a big lick from Goliath...... well maybe you can just tell him that Goliath says "hi"  LOL.....

: Proliant November 20, 2005, 01:20:22 PM
As far as the temperment goes, I would have to say that I haven't seen any type of agression from Goliath (or any of the other AM's I have met) however they can be protective. I have seen my normally super sweet baby (best friend of all the kids in the neighborhood and general love bunny) go to raging madman when we walked into my house being broken into ..... That was one regretting crook! But it is more a laid back OEM personallity then Anatolian from everything I have seen.

I love the personality ...... I got an AM because I had an OEM near me when I was a kid and I was hoping for that same temperment for my son to grow up with as well.

How old are the AM's...Anatolians and other LGD"s wont show their true character until 2-4 years old...and with LGD's it isnt problems with your family, it is members outside the family they are unfamilar with...

Both my dogs CAO & CO are LGD's and they are marshmallows but it is strange people that I need to be careful about

MY female is still young on 5 months so she is fine..my male is 1 yr and still puppy like in a ton of ways...he is more distrustful of strangers as he matures.  LGD's also arent big on wrestling..mea ning my son cant wrestle with friends unfamilar to my dog and he also gets upset if my husband wrestles with me, they also dont like fast movements or eratic behavior

Just show you know the LGD's way of thinking :) which is very different than mastiffs and incase things you didnt recogize before pop up

You are perfectly correct that the end temperment isn't set until 2-4 years old. Goliath turned 1 on 11/13/05 so we keep a good eye on everything he does and he gets LOTS of socialization (puppy park several times a week, daily walks in the neighborhood, lots of time with our kids and their friends etc ....) spending as much time as possible with other people/animals. But still I trust his instincts over my own as far as who are "good" people. I believe that dogs (especially any breed that is basically an old fashioned castle guard dog) has the correct sense of who to trust and who not to. The real test is that you will never know you are being protected by a protective dog (as opposed to agressive) until their services are NEEDED, like the breakin incident. You would never have guessed that Goliath had a viscious bone in his body until that moment (except maybe for the stuffed .... then unstuffed toys ..... LOL). The truth of the matter is that there is no such thing as a completly trustable dog (no matter what the breed is) because no matter how we feel about them they are still animals.

BTW - the name was my wife's choice ..... sadly it was one of the conditions of getting a puppy that she got to name him ..... I would have prefered "Fluffy" or "Tiny"

Goliath is gorgeous.  I absolutely love brindle mastiffs.  I just wanted to say happy birthday to him........... .....my dane Gunther turned 1 on 11/12.
: Re: Introducing Angus!
: BabsT November 20, 2005, 05:30:49 PM
Oh I understand...I was just giving you an understanding of a LGD vs a mastiff...very different in a lot of ways...

And in regards to trusting his instincts, I agree...but when it is your aunt and or brother or friend...well you have to work around it. LOL

Granted a Anatolian has a much stronger temp than a AM there is anatolian in there somewhere and you make wake up morning and have a giant anatolian on your hands
: Re: Introducing Angus!
: Proliant November 21, 2005, 11:59:25 PM
So far Goliath and I seem to have pretty similar likes and dislikes in people, so hopefully it will work out well. If he doesn't like my relatives then we will just be agreeing again ;D . I still think the average dog is smarter then the average person.

PS - Happy Birthday Gunther!

American Mastiffs are the best.  My Duchess turned 1 in December and she is the most incredible dog.  Everyone comments on how beautiful and well behaved she is.  Congrats and enjoy.
