: need to gain weight
: newfsie July 08, 2008, 04:25:13 AM
Annabelle our new newf rescue has been with us for five weeks now. She is quite lean :o...........Yo u can feel every spinal process and every rib.Her coat looks great after we washed and groomed her, She weighed in at 85lbs when we got her and i think that she need to be about 110lbs. She eats like a horse, three meals a day at present and has ofcourse been wormed. She does not tolerate canned or dry food. They give her diarhoea. So we cook rice/pasta with veg and chicken mince. And she get raw mince and chicken necks plus vitamins and supplements. She is eating about three times the amount Zack, atavar, ate and twice the amount my previous newf bitch, Abbey, ate. And she weighed 135lbs :-\
The only difference is that she is very lively and has a border collie X golden retriever as her playmate. I do not want a fat lazy dog, but I would love to put some more muscle on her. Does anyone have any special ideas. She loves porridge and has that for breakfast. And she also loves big marrow beef bones, which gets frequently. Thanks ;D

This is the only recipe I know of for adding weight.

Satin Balls

5 pounds raw ground meat
5 cups Total whole grain cereal
5 cups oats (slow cooking type)
2½ cups raw wheat germ
¾ cup oil
¾ cup molasses
6 egg yolks
5 packets gelatin
2 ½ tablespoons Solid Gold Seameal supplement

Mix up, form balls, freeze, feed as treats or food supplement.

Mix all ingredients together thoroughly like you would a meatloaf.
Roll into balls no larger than 1 inch diameter.
Divide into at least 6 separate containers or bags. Freeze. Thaw as needed for feeding.

Can you get Innova dog food in Australia?  If so, we've found it to be a very good quality & high calorie dog food.  Just a thought....

too bad she's so sensitive with dry kibble... i heard that Solid Gold "over the moon" is great for weight to be put on.  it's all protein.  That's what i've heard that if you want to put weight on it's Protein, Protein, Protein!!

what a cutie too!!!

Well I ws worried that it was not happening with her cooked/raw diet, but she weighed in at 10lbs more this fortnight and she looks so shiny. We have free range chickens and she loves eggs. So hurray for protein. She also loves the first satin balls. Thank you from both of us

Satin balls are only the VERY special treat, she loves them.
She was a very hungry dog when we first got her, but she has settled and seems to have settled down to a normal newf eating routine. I just cannot give her kibble or canned. Volume wise the rice is only a small percentage. It is mostly raw ground chicken, chicken necks and veg. The chicken is from an organic
free range place. They just happen to be nearby. And she loves beef bones, especially the tail. Thank you for the info
