: Big paws= Big Cars?
: Care2Adopt March 09, 2008, 11:28:38 PM
Thought I would ask around- what kind of cars do you guys drive for your big paws? I am in the market for a new car (I currently drive a PT cruiser which has quite a lot of cargo space for a moderatly sized vehicle, especially when you take the back seats out) and need to find something that can fit two large crates in... but also something that gets relatively good gas mileage. Unfortunatly my little PT cruiser only gets about 19 mpg in the city.

What kind of cars do you guys drive? Hows the gas mileage, and traveling with the big guys?

We've got a Ford Taurus right now but in the summer she's getting a Subaru outback and I'm gonna be looking at the Tundra

I LOVE my GMC Yukon. It gets the best gas mileage of all the gas hogs, for what that's worth. I don't transport a lot of GIANT dogs. However, I do regularly transport a family of 6. The GMC can seat 9 people if you get the kind of front seat set up that has a seat belt in the middle. You can take out BOTH the middle and third row of seats so there is mega space in there. I really love it. There's also an "XL" that has even more space, but it looks too long for me. Good luck!

We drive a Nissan Xterra...Coope r rides in the backseat right now, but we are starting to have trouble lifting him in because he is getting so big.  We are planning on getting a ramp and padding for the way back area in the next few weeks.  We are looking to get anohter vehicle sometime soon for my husband, with Coopers needs in mind though!

We have an F-150 FX4. There is enough room in the backseat to take one dog at a time. :-\ I could probably cram them both in but they wouldn't be comfy. :D

I looooove the truck but the gas milage sucks.. it's a 5.4 engine.. nuff said. ;)

Well I just got my new car!  I totally love it.  Its a Honda Element and the seats do so many things I cant even name them all...The best feature is the utility floor...doesnt matter whats on the floor you can wash it out.  The back seats come totally out with the pull of a lever or you can lay them flat pull another lever and they pop up and you can attach them to the side with a utility hook!  Its freaking awesome.  I just got it so I am doing the mileage thing now!!

We have a dodge 3500 dual rear wheels, quad cab.  We can fit dog comfortably in that truck. In my truck, we removed the back seat of my dodge dakota.  So by removing the seat actually gave us an extra foot of room, so now, the dogs are comfortable in mine as well.

Don't ask about the fuel milage......

What an awesome rig PTKennel!  I used to have a triple axel 5th wheel and loved it but it was set up for two ppl. I have a 33 ft motorhome now which works great with all the critters.  haha ONe time last summer we have Marley, Lanie, the two chihuahuas, a ball python, tony the ferret and James the cat all in the camper.  We camped for two weeks. We did take Tony and James home and traded for a different snake and a lizard though.  Thankfully it was only like 60 miles home!  But back to my element...I didnt tell you the only downfall to it, is it is a four seater...Bucke ts in teh front and back.  Not a problem for us since we only have two kids. But it works great for the doggies...With Marley and Laney in the back (300lbs of dog) lots of room to spare!

I have a Toyota Rav4 and I love it! I get approx 26-28 mpg. I only have Keela the malamutt, so I'm not a whole lot of help on more than one big dog.

our trailer is a toy hauler. So the back 12 feet is a seperate room where we can set up crates and what ever... Nice to have a back door to go in and out of too when the weather is nasty. saves lots of cleaning.

PT Kennel - wow I feel like I drive an economy car next to your gas guzzling rig.

I drive a GMC Yukon which I love - I am always in the car and it is so comfortable and I feel safe.  My husband has a Nissan X-terra he has had it for 2 years and he really likes it although we are considering trading it on something a bit better on gas.  I doubt we will we are just trying to sound like we are saving money and the environment.

I have a Jeep Liberty, which fumble fits in just fine when the back seat is down..  which it is ALL THE TIME! but fumble, even being very large and in charge, fits in the bakc of stacy's two door chevy thingie.. i can't remember the name.  the mileage on the jeeps is okay, not great though.  Good luck! :)

1 giant, 1 medium and 2 small dogs = Honda Accord.  ::)

I am looking to upgrade next fall though.  Definitely something with 3rd row.  I was hoping gas mileage would be better by now for SUV's but apparantly that won't happen in my lifetime.

Poor Rosie, both our cars are two door coupes, an Acura RSX and Acura CL. She has to hop into the back seats through the little tiny opening behind the forward-reclined front seat. We haven't bought a new car since we got her. But our next car will likely be a small SUV with reasonable gas mileage. We were thinking about the Honda Element because of the interior configurations . But then again, I love the Acura MDX but it's just a tad expensive. We'll see.

Currently I've got a Chev Epica, it's a nice medium sized luxury car, nice sized back seats that both dogs fit easily in with a bit of room to spare for back seat human passengers or one of them at least!  ::) ;) :D.  I will be upgrading to a cross over SUV come next winter though.  II like the Equinox, maybe a Hundai Tuscon, or if I get the job I really really want, I'm gonna go for the Lexus RX 400h, it's a small hybrid SUV.  And it's real PURDY!  ;) ;D

I've got a Pontiac minivan. I have taken the 3rd row out for the dogs to have more room in the back. Before we had Jenny, Tipper had the 3rd row to himself and was lovin' it. I get pretty decent gas mileage for a minivan. I'm always pleasantly surprised to see how a tank of gas lasts. With my twin girls in the 2nd row seats, the dogs get the back.

I have a Jeep Warngler that only comes out on bad days in the winter or nice days in the summer.  I also have a Honda Fit. It is a deceptively big small car that gets darn near 40 MPG on the highway.  Its blended average in around 33 MPG.  With the rear seat folded down I could fit my Dane and Mastiff in the back.  The cockpit is very room for a small car.  I am 6'4" 270 and I have plenty of space.  I put a Yamika Roof rack on the top so I can stow gear for longer trips.

We have a Toyota Sequioa Limited and I LOVE it.  I thought I was downgrading from my other car when we got it (I had my dream car, a British Racing Green Jag) but the Sequioa is the best car I've ever had.  Also, people don't stare as much as they did when I had the Jag loaded with three dogs and a bale of hay for the goats.  Yes, the people at the feed store thought I was nuts when I'd be like "Just toss the bale in the backseat!"
Anyway, three dogs (soon to be four), husband, baby and luggage for a week and I can all fit.
