: I bought a horse - meet Mojo!
: PennyK July 12, 2006, 11:47:36 AM
I have borrowed horses all my life.  I went to a horse college, I worked for an Olympic show jumper, I've ridden endurance races, but I've never owned a horse.

For the sum of $1.00 (yes, that is $1), I am now the owner of a 3 yr old standardbred pacing mare.

I often walk through the local harness racing barn on a Sunday morning with my kids.  This past Sunday we ran into one of the regulars that is always there working his horses and he asked me if I wanted a free horse.  I said my DH would never allow it. (which i was correct)

So....then I thought about it for a day.  This is a once in a lifetime opportunity.  I went home and TOLD DH I was taking the horse!  LOL!  (he's a bit miffed but smart enough not to cross me about this!)

I sure have my work cut out for me to retrain her as a riding horse but she is so gentle and easy going that I don't think it will be more than I'm capable of.

Without further ado.......here is my new girl Mojo!! (it was starting to get dark so pics are not the best)

MOJO is beautiful!  CONGRATS!  That's sort-of what I did too (although not the FREE part)!!! ;D

I bought a Thorougbred off the track for cheap.  He's a beautiful boy, stands 16 hands 3".  Re-training was very hard, but worth it! :)

Have fun! ;)

She is so beautiful!! My Aunt had Standardbreds while I was growning up. I spent many weekends at the barn and track learning the ins and outs of the sport...they are great horses who can make wonderful riding horses with time and training.
Congrats...

She is gorgeous.  What a beauty!
Is she branded?  I noticed a mark on her neck.
Good luck with the training.  I haven't ridden in years.  Here I am at my parents, and they have horses, but I haven't ridden.  Three are my sister's and she doesn't like anyone to ride them but her, and the one I co-own with my mom now has foot problems so you can't ride her much.

Liz - I may be coming to you for advice!  LOL!  I'm not much of a jumper but my goal is a few cavalettis to start and then maybe, once I see how she goes, do some local low level hunter stuff.  I'm so excited - I haven't slept well since Saturday because I'm sooo keyed up!  LOL!

Congratulation s!!!! I am the proud owner of 2 Standardbred mares. Treat With Passion is 26 yrs young and still going strong!!! She never made her qualifying times, so became a pleasure horse at 3. I have owned her for 13 years. Pixie is 16 years young and raced for 9 years. She came to us 2years ago and had never been ridden. She raced as a pacer, but has not paced a day since we have had her. Her trot is beautiful. She is a wonderful trail horse and pleasure driving. I have been a member of the Standardbred Pleasure Horse Organization in Maine for 13 years. We have a website and some wonderful people that could help guide you with MoJo.
