: Is my newfie pup showing lameness?
: loofagirl January 21, 2008, 10:25:00 PM
Hi, I'm brand new to the board and relatively new to the world of Newfs.  We got our pup at just over 7 weeks - she is 12 weeks now.

She seems to be in good health, from a great breeder, and all around your typical, happy go-lucky oafy newf pup.

My question is that for the past day or so I've noticed that she's been having little trouble getting up.  We have linoleum flooring so it may be a little slippery but evenstill, when she is in an all-out laying position (tummy flat on the floor, legs sprawled out straight behind her), when she tries to get up, she seems to have difficulty getting traction to stand.

Is this a sign of something?

Thanks so much for any help/information that you can provide!!!

Just sounds like the floor is slippery  Try a throw rug for some traction  Also trim the hair down on the bottom of her feet- helps with traction if the pads of the feet are actually coming into contact with the floor- all that furry stuff just acts like skis!

There is a waxy product sold for sled dogs that is great for adding a little bit of traction to baby paws. We have one room that our dogs with mobility issues are not allowed into because the floor is so smooth.

Have the Vet. check your dog's legs next time you are there for shots, the knees and hips especially.

Does your girl display any signs of pain or distress?  If the answer is no I would not worry to much about it.  The others have posted some great advice.  If she is showing signs of pain then that would be a different issue.

Thank you guys so much.  We've had a lab and a St. Bernard in the past but haven't had a puppy in almost 11 years so it's all new to me again!

Thanks so much for the advice (and the validation to buy new rugs).

Ditto to what everyone else said.  I keep the hair between Bodhi's toes cut (a chore because he hates to have his feet messed with!) and we have rugs and runners all over our hardwood floors.

What cracks me up is when Bodhi sits on the bare floor and his butt starts sliding!  He finally wised up and started sitting with his back end up against our island counter...but he is so huge and heavy that he just pushes it across the kitchen!  I am always finding it at a weird angle....I think I need to bolt it to the floor...lolol. ..
