Just his back feet are like that?  Has he always walked like that or did he just start it recently?  It doesn't look like he is walking on his pads at all, very strange ???.  Does he seem sore or lame at all?

Marit,

The food will be SO GOOD that the dogs won't even get fat!  ;D

Nicker, I wish I could say something to ease your mind about Angus.  Part of loving them so much is constantly worrying about them.  Ranger has the potential for some back end issues down the road, and sometimes it is really hard for me to stop freaking out about what may happen down the road, and focus on doing the best that I can for him right now to prevent it...  You are a great dog mommy, and you are doing all you can do, and he loves you for it!

BTW, Marit, what are you feeding your guys right now, (if you dont mind my asking), and (probably a dumb question) what does a "hooky" rear end look like?
: Re: back foot issue??????
: mastiffmommy June 07, 2005, 10:12:25 PM
Not dumb at all..... If you stand behind a dog and its hooks on the back legs kinda point inwards, they are hooky. It is a lot of genetics but even if you have a puppy that looks like it will have a perfect stand. A lot can happe, they can grow too fast, walk/run on slick floors, jump too much up and down, walk the stairs too much and all of the above has an impact on the hooks.

For what I feed. I have my dogs on Eagle Pack and pretty much follow the feeding recommendation s Linda Arndt has. I posted a thread here about a feeding site for large to giant breeds. I follow that and like it a lot, and most of all, my dogs like it and seem to grow and work well on it.

I love the feeding topic can you tell hehe  ::)

I am interested in the feeding thing too, especially since when I had Cabo, he had a bout with pancreatitis and his stomach was never the same again.  I had him on what I thought was an okay food at the time, but of course, now i wish I had known better.  My guys are currently on Hund-n-Flocken, but I am always wondering what they really SHOULD be on, ya know?

GOOD JOB NICKER, YOU BROKE HIM!  Or maybe it's from his drunken stagger after drinking all your leftovers?  I'm changing his name to Floyd.

Hey nickers,
I'm not sayin' it's a hip thing, and I'm not sayin' it's not, but check one more thing. I think I remember you saying that Angus licks his paws alot. Well, Oreo was rolling his feet a few months ago when he walked. Of course he's a compulsive foot licker and I noticed the area between his pads/toes were all red and sore especially in front of the large pad. It seemed it was so raw that he would walk/stand goofy to keep from putting max pressure on it. Kinda lke if you had a bad blister, you might dance different. Well,... I guess you might dance different anyway, Nickers. The picture doesn't show the redness I'm talking about, but check behind the front toes for anything.

Regardless, it is probably best to have a vet check the little one out.

Also, and you probably did this already, check for anything stuck in the toes (spinters of wood, pieces of glass, loose legos, etc). Remember the Lion and the Thorn.

Nicker,

You are taking excellent care of him.  I'm sure he loves you for it.

I have never seen the foot in a position like that before.  I am very sorry to hear he has so many health problems.  It stinks, but I know we always do our best and still love them so much!

Thanks for posting the photo of his foot.  That is extremely informative.  I never knew dogs with hip challenges may position their feet that way.

Sorry about Angus! I know shark cartiladge is good for joint issues, not sure about the protein value of it though.  We will keep Angus in our thoughts and prayers.
