: Magda the Curly Coat
: traklover September 14, 2006, 04:49:14 AM
I thought I would post some new pictures of my curly coated retriever pup. Unfortunately there is not a place for curly coats (they removed it some time ago, replacing it with rare retriever breeds, and then removing it entirely. So I hope I may be forgiven for posting it under the flatties, which I feel is more approriate than under the general). Magda is now a year old (back in July) and here are some pics of her taken last month.

So thats what Harley would look like with a perm!!!

Magda is very cute - I love the picture with her ears flying in the air!!

By the way Harley is an almost 5 year old Flat Coat.  His picture here isn't great one of these days I will take a better one.

Welcome to the rare retrievers!!

Here are some more pics of Magda. In March on the picnic table and in May at one of the nearby beaches.
They seem to be an almost unknown breed. In shows around here, she is a one of, inspires much comment as many people have only seen them in books, not in flesh. Unfortunately so far it hasn't paid off in the group ring, although some judges seem to get carried away in running their fingers through her hair. You would think that with hair like that, it would be difficult to care for, but everything just falls out, and to get the coat ready for show, you just allow them a swim in the nearest lake (primps the coat perfectly, and the dog loves it).

I know this is a dumb question, but how often are you asked if she's a shaved poodle?  Or some kind of an 'oodle' mix?

We have all laughed at the questions we get about our guys..so I can only imagine what you get with such a rare breed!!!

I get stopped alot and asked if she is a labradoodle, and sometimes if she is a standard poodle. Worst one was at a dog show, where someone was asking their son, if he could identify her breed, suggesting that if might start with I. I corrected quickly, and it turned out she was thinking poorly trimmed Irish Water Spaniel (never seen a liver curly, only the blacks). What made it worst was the next day I saw her again, and it turned out she was a newly trained CKC judge, sporting group.
When I decided to get Magda, I decided to show her, as so many people thought Rica (my black girl)was a labradoodle. The first match she went to, the junior handler who showed her was asked twice if she was a labradoodle). At regular CKC shows, we have no points (win breed everytime, only CCR), and our main job seems to be exposing people to the breed including the other exhibitors. Magda being a very friendly loving girl greatly enjoys her role as breed ambassador.

Magda sure is a looker.  How long have you been showing? We just got into it this past year.  The only shows in this area are AKC.

DixieSugarBear, I just started showing in June this year, so I am quite inexperienced. I take some classes in handling in effort to do better, but so far no payoff. A couple of times the judge has seemed to take a second look in the group ring. Unfortunately the dogs pulled in the group ring are most handled by pro's, and are older more mature dogs. At fourteen months, Magda still looks puppyish beside them. I did try a pro at a show, but still nothing. I have decided to take a break and let her mature some more (curlies are slow maturing), and then try again in the spring. I may try a couple of AKC shows in Maine next year, (they are about eight to ten hours drive away), however mostly I will show in Canada.
How are you making out? any points, any competition in the breed ring.

We have 1 point, from our first show. There are very few pyrs in the area we show in so we have had a lot of show without any point.  In Atlanta three weeks ago we got three seconds in open class and one reserve winner. I have been using a pro handler so that Dixie can learn what to do in the ring. Now that she does it is my turn to learn what I am doing.  Our next show will be local and Melissakins and I are going to show Dixie in open and Penny Lane in a BMatch.
