: our 10 week leo is not well

Hi i'm just looking for someone to ease my mind please .

I posted some pics of callie our 10 week old leonberger , well on sunday night she had the runs , only once but alot for a pup , and again the runs on monday , she has not been sick and had been playing and pinching tinsel from the tree as usual.

Late monday afternoon she went again and this time she had blood in it , so i called my dad to take me to the vet ( hubby was at work). The vet checked her temp, belly etc and all was well , so she gave me some tinned food ( easy on callie's tummy ) and some pro biotic 2ml 3 times a day.

I know i am going on but she is only a baby and i'm so worried about her .

Today is tuesday and she has the runs still. In total so far she has had 6ml of the pro biotic , but today she does not seem so bouncy and is not really interested in her food, if she is no better tomorrow i will take her again and the vet will give her antibiotics.

have any of you had this problem ? , do you think i am worrying for no reason , ( i hope i am ).

She has only been in our back garden as she still has one jab left before she goes out in the big world. Neither of my other dogs are showing signs of being ill .

I just want her to be back to normal being a pain and peeing and chewing everything .

Any thoughts will be great thankyou
tracey.

Sorry I cannot ease your mind here. Get your puppy to a vet ASAP. Puppies can become dehydrated very quickly and bloody diarhhea is about one of the worst symptoms I can think of for a pup to have. :-[

edited: sorry I just posted that really quick because I have had parvo pups in my care before and that is not anything to mess around with. :'( If it were my pup, I would have a parvo test done. I hope your baby is feeling better soon. :-*

we had something like this happen ONE time, when tiny had gotten lose and came back with whip worms and hook worms.  she deteriorated very quickly, was acting fine on friday, and by tuesday had gone to skin and bone, very lethargic, very sickly looking.  she was only like 5 or 6 months old, and it took 2 vets to believe us something was wrong, she was pooping blood in her diahhrea to the point she had covered the ENTIRE kitchen in bloody poop in one night, every night.  it smelled absolutely horrible!

I'm so sorry to hear your pup isn't feeling well.  I'd maybe go to another vet, or have the vet check a stool sample to make sure it's not worms or some other kind of parasite.  If it's just a upset tummy, maybe you could give oatmeal/boiled chicken, or rice and boiled chicken or beef.  Get better soon Callie!

Just wondering how Callie is doing.  I am sure I speak for everyong here, we would love to have an update on her condition and what the vet had to say.

Sending big furry hugs and slobbery kisses to both you and Callie.

wouldn't coccidia have a grainy poop?  like it has sand in it?  all the dogs i've ever seen with it (i used to work at a pet store) it was very noticeable, but i don't know enough to know how bad it was in them.

Hi Tracy.  I'm very sorry to hear about Callie.  I don't have any advice but I did want to send lots of well wishes to both of you.  Get better Callie.   :-* :-*

thanks!  the vet the store i worked at used (we took in strays and "rescues" too) told me that the grainy poop was also a sign of coccidia, although they did always have the runs and mucusy stool.  not sure if he was right on the sandy poop anymore, although the medicine did make the grainy poop go away.

Ditto the fecal sample.  There's no way to tell what's going on w/o one.  IF the sample is clear, they generally prescribe flagyl or something like that (I'm pretty sure it is an antibiotic) which usually does take care of the problem.  Some puppers have sensitive tummies.  Our youngest Lab had a terrible time until we found a food that agreed with him.  Heaven help us if we try something else!  He also tends to eat gross stuff (poop) when his tummy is upset from a food that does not agree which in turn makes the problem worse.  You can also try some rice and hamburger with a bit of canned pumpkin to help make the stools firmer and help get the tummy settled.  Hope you can get to the bottom of the issue!

You said she's been playing with tinsel...are you sure she didn't eat any?  Tinsel can cause blockages or be irritating her stomach and intestines.  We don't use tinsel at all in our house due to the fact it can cause blockages especially with puppies.  Has she been throwing up at all or giving any symptoms of a blockage? I'd definitely get a fecal done and if there's a possibly a blockage a barium xray series.

 :)
Thank you to everyone who posted.

I have taken on board things people have said , like i have removed the tinsel  :).

Callie is doing much better, we took her to the vets again and i took a sample with me , which the vet has sent away to be checked. The vet gave callie  a special food, some more pro biotic and some antibiotics along with a sickness jab.

I am very happy to say callie is on the mend ,her poop is firming up & she is so noisy and hungry its unbelievable , so it will be good to get her weight back up she lost just under 7lb in four days.

Once again a big thankyou to all who posted , i'm so glad my house is on the way back to being a noisy , hectic, crazy place to live, (even though i think sometimes i need my head looking into) with my senile dalmatian , my soft cuddly goldie , who growls @ the pup because she scares him & callie who is just totally crazy and moves so fast she falls over her own feet , but not before she takes a bite at your ankle on the way past ;)

Thats AWESOME news about Callie..  I've got my fingers crossed on hearing about a good report regarding the sample the vet sent for lab work.  I'm so glad Callie is feeling better.  Thank you for the update.  It's nice to hear some good news.

Yay!! I'm glad to hear your house is returning to it's normal crazyness and that Callie is doing well. The tinsel thing was something we didn't know about for awhile but with my mom working at the vet clinic we hear all sorts of horror stories so we keep our house pretty puppy proof plus we've had puppies in the house for the past 4yrs so it's stayed that way.
