Do you know how much time they have left? I am in Nashville and do some rescue but how do they handle extreme heat? I have a feeling not too well! Also do you know what part of Kentucky?

It is pyrnet-l@pyrnet.org, I just sent the email out, I would take them in but I live in Canada, I'll see if I can contact the shelter though to see howmuch time they have left.

They are in Barren River Animal Welfare Association in Glasgow, KY. According to Petfinder.com Pyrs can tolerate heat, there fur helps keep them cool in the summer and warm in winter.

Here some news on the Pups, I haven't heard anything from ther shelter that they are in yet but I have gotten some emails back from my email group and I haven done a search online to find some no kill shelters in Kentucky and found some. One of the people in my group said they'd be willing to help with the transport to another area, so there's hope. I'll see about getting the collie mix out of there too, his face broke my heart.. can't leave him there.  :'( But it's looking good.

I just got some news from the shelter that the dogs are in and he said that they are on Borrowed time, they get 5 days and then they are adopted out or put down. So they are on borrowed time now. I told him that I have contacted some rescue groups and some people are will to help with transport all I need is to find a rescue to take them in. I asked him to please wait to give me time...( sorry this is very hard for me .. crying... feel very helpless.... Well hopefully they just wait and give me time to find them a no kill place....

I would be happy to pick them up and even foster them but I just don't have the money to get them out of jail right now!

On the shelter's website it said that dog adoptions are *usually* $65.00.
: Re: Pyr's to be euthanized in Kentucky. Can anyone help??
: Nina July 21, 2005, 07:22:11 AM
I have emailed all the pyr rescue groups in all the surrounding states and the pyr list that I belong to people are willing to transport the dogs and one person is trying to find them a home. According to the website the adoption fees are $65 dollars per dog, I would be more than willing to help with some money, I would have some tomorrow as I get paid then. Please let me know if you can pick them up, someone on my Pyr list is in Kentucky and asking people that she knows if they are willing to adopt, they had a pyr before and it passed on because of old age...

thanks

I am working at trying to pay the fees to get them "out of jail"..I have sent an email and left a message for the animal shelter to contact me as soon as possible.  I will keep the group posted once I hear a reply.  If the "out of jail" money will keep them safe until we can get them out of there, I can make transportation arrangements to meet someone part of the way and bring them back to Wisconsin; whatever it takes.

Where are you in WI?...I am close to Dubuque IA & could help with a leg of transportation but it would have to be on a weekend day as my only vehicle goes to work with my hubby in Dubuque Mon.-Fri....He's also working Sat. right now but is home earlier than the rest of the week.
: Re: Pyr's to be euthanized in Kentucky. Can anyone help??

How many of them are getting out of jail? I don't know how many pyrs will fit in my 4 door car! But then again, stuffing them into my car will probably make them happier than being in the pound! Whoever is the grand master of this plan let me know how I can help out. Best possible scenario sounds like if they could go to a pyr rescue group who has lots of experience with this breed, but I will sure help if I can!

So here's what is happening so far, there is 3 dogs that are in need of rescue, Beth has offered to help pay for the get out of Jail fee and I can help as well, it is $65 per dog, according to the website.  So we have 2 options

1) Beth can get them to a rescue shelter in wisconsin, I have emailed someone from my pyr list, she said she could possible help with trasnport but her car can only hold 2 dogs max.

2) we also have transport to denver but I haven't heard anything back from any shelters in that area.

If you can help with transport that would be great gyps. If you want to email me or Beth and let us know that would be great.

What cuties, I just went to take a look at them on Petfinder, they are adorable.

Has anyone found a no kill rescue group yet? I live in NC, I have no idea if there are any pyr. groups here, or if anyone has checked on it. Sometimes it is annoying to work for rescue groups that deal with only one breed, it makes you feel helpless in situations when it is not that breed who need help. Mind you maybe just because of the fact that people are working with the breed or their "hearts" that people are willing to go the extra mile. I dont know though.

I will do a check around NC and SC and see if there is any pyr groups. Just a couple of weeks ago I had a rescue transport going to glos. KY it was a Maine Coon cat but I am sure the transporters could have given the puppies a ride the other way, now that wont help them now, I wish we had seen this a little earlier.

If there is a need for donations for the shelter fees, I am more than willing to help out.

I wish you luck, and I live all the way in Oregon, but if I can help (maybe with paying for part of the fee), let me know, I would be more than willing to pitch in

Ok some new info, looks like Wisconsin is a better route to go, as there is no place for them in Colorado. If wisconsin falls through we may still have a place for them in Denver. And Beth is in contact with the shelter, there has been on inquiry on Opal but nothing definate at this point.
If anyone can help with the transport to Wisconsin let me know  ;D Thanks

Ok. If whoever is taking them across the country can only manage two at a time, here's what I could do: I could grab the mix (Ranger) and just bring him down to Tennessee and either keep him (did I just say that?) or foster him for a while. If y'all need me to do this, let me know. I love adventures.

Yeah when do I need to pick him up? If they take credit cards, I can manage the fee but otherwise I'll need assistance. I'm getting ready to move into a new house and all my cash is going towards the pet deposit!!! LOL!!
I am so excited!
I have two huge bags of dogfood in my trunk that were just waiting for my next foster dog!

Everyone;  So much appreciation to all of you for your dedication to these (3) Pyrs....an update.  I just spoke with the Barren River Animal Welfare Association in Glasgow, Jy.  The (2) Pyrs, Opal and Bernice, are being recused by a Great Pyrenees rescue group this Sunday, July 24.  The gentleman will be picking them both up at that time.  I did emphasize that should anything fall through that they contact me directly should anything change, and I would assure to make alternative arrangements.  So, they will stay together for sure.  The Pyr/Collie mix, Ranger, is still available.  So, "doghealer" if you would like to give this beauty a loving home, please call Linda Kuhn at the Barren River Animal Welfare Association in Glasgow, Ky at 270-651-7297 to make arrangements for adoption as soon as possible.  I will gladly assist with any fees you would incur without hesitation.  I apologize that I did not ask about charge cards, but that would not be a problem with me either.  Please advise if I can help you further.  I would sleep much better tonight knowing that all 3 were going to good homes away from that place.  Again, thanks to all of you for your amazing offers of kindness.  We have done good today...

The lady at the shelter said the gentleman picking up the dogs this Sunday is from "Campbellsville", Ky, and I am not sure if I have the spelling correct.  Apparently that is a town a little ways from Glasgow.  Feel like driving the 900 miles to the front door to be there when he arrives just to make sure they are OK, but she reassured me all would be well.

Great work and lucky lucky puppies. Reffering to Greek4's thread about a BPO rescue group. I think it would be possible to arrange someting like that, quite a few things to have sorted out first, but definately a doable thing.

AAAHHHH!! I am still waiting on a call back from the shelter!
When I called I asked how many days he had left and the receptionist didn't know, and she said they had a lot of calls about the pyrs, and I told her I would be happy as long as somebody saved him (but of course I would like it to be me)... and she kinda said something like they'd keep me in mind, and that someone would call me back... maybe they are just very busy? Or maybe I misunderstood and she said she'd call me only if no one else adopted him?? I just don't know!
I looked at a map and I really think that place in Kentucky is maybe a two hour drive from here at most. If I don't hear back today I'll call first thing in the morning and go get him if I can.
I will definitely let everyone know as soon as I hear anything!

ask her to send it to me so I can review it and
print it out for presentation to the BRAWA adoption
team.  That means that me and one other person
will  very very likely approve it, but it satisfies the
requirements (City/County Gov. thing....).  Once
we get her approved and her committment to
the $65 adoption fee (vet costs for exam, first
shots and neutering) she can "come get her dog."
I playing with Ranger today, it was hot and he
didn't want to leave the air conditioning for the
outdoor yard.  He fumed and fussed at me and
"dug in"   I fussed back and told him not to be
obnoxious.  He came on out with me and we
played ball for a few minutes.  He chases and then
keeps it.   Greedy fella!    I took the ball from his
mouth a couple of times and he was gentle as a
baby.   I had never seen him sit back and balk
like a mule until today.  I asked if he ever showed
any aggression or anything and he hadn't.  He had
just come in from outside and they told me he
used the potty and then sat at the gate waiting
to come in.  Then I came along and drug him out
again.  I think that was the issue.   From the
kennels the only place they go is outside so he
knew the drill.
Let me know and I will do all I can to get this
rolling downhill  <smile>  and  thanks!
                                           Joe

Wow, I wonder why they never called me back?
Ok, I am trying to work this out... my friend in the rescue group here gave me some advice and ideas of what I am getting myself into, and my boyfriend is already worried about lots of white hair so this isn't going to be as easy as I thought!!!

Hi let me know, if you can't foster him then maybe I can contact Vinny Dog and get him to the Wisconsin shelter.

Thanks

: Kermit July 21, 2005, 09:34:00 PM
Ok. After a long conversation with boyfriend, I realize I can't keep him. I am getting ready to move and my next few weeks are going to be chaos!
What I can offer for Ranger is that I can be the one to pick him up, and I could conceivably keep him for a few days. If it turned out that he was very mellow and housebroken and healthy, I could take care of him for longer. Otherwise it would be really difficult in my current apartment! I don't have a crate big enough for a Pyr! So if we could quickly find a home or a rescue group willing to take him, that would work best for my current situation. If this happened 2 weeks from now it would be smooth sailing!
In the morning I am going to call the shelter. Most likely they will want to send him directly to a vet to be neutered so I wouldn't be able to pull him right out anyway. They might be able to get his shot records if he was an owner surrender, and if they have more information it would really help me with the planning. If I get him out under the name of ... (who I do some work with) his adoption fee might be discounted. Hopefully!
There is a Pyr Rescue in Tennessee who takes in mixed breed pyrs, I'll give them a call in the morning and see if they are willing to help out.
Anyone else have any ideas? Like I said, I am still more than happy to be the one who gets him out of there and keep him a few days. But just getting him out could be more complicated than just handing them a check and walking out with the dog!
I know it's getting late, but I will check back and see if someone wise can help solve this dilemma!

As far as the hair goes, get yourself a grooming tool called a rake...It is a God send!...I brush Samson out thoroughly once a week & run a brush over him where he sheds most almost every day...It really keeps up on the loose hair...B.t.w., Pyrs make EXCELLENT house dogs...They don't take up much space because they rarely move...lol!

Dilbert (pyr mix) doesn't shed that much, only when he blew his coat and that came out in clumps. I find that short haired dogs shed more. My brothers Dane was here for 4 days and the room that he slept in with her was FULL of tiny black hairs, I am still finding her hair every where! Love her but man she sheds like 24/7.

At least with Pyr hair you can find it to clean it up...I have 8 cats also...That darn hair weaves itself into stuff!...I have very nice cat hair woven cream carpet no matter how much I vacuum...When I vacuum Samson's area the hair is gone.
: Re: Pyr's to be euthanized in Kentucky. Can anyone help??
: Nina July 21, 2005, 10:22:06 PM
That is so true I don't know what it is about the hair but it is so easy to clean, maybe cus it's so fluffy?? Harleys hair sticks more and really gets into the carpet. Luckly I have carpet only in the living room the rest is wood, so easy clean up there.

Yeah, I think what my boyfriend said out loud was about fluffy hair but what he really meant was can we handle another dog right now... he is a dog lover like me who is asleep as I speak with 3 dogs in his bed, I don't think it's a hair issue!
We are about to move back in together (long story) so if I get a new dog it is his too, and I think he wanted our next dog to be a joint decision. We both know we are going to end up with about 10 dogs, but with just getting back into living together I need to remember to be respectful.
I have to just have faith that we can help Ranger out of a tough spot and something will work out for him.

Respectful...Oh o.k...that's when you wash his dirty undies, cook his dinner, split yourself open to have his children, clean the house, & always love him & back him up even when he is wrong...& he lets you have 8 house cats, 2 house bunnies, 1 guinea pig, (& cries with you when the other g. pig dies of old age) & 2 dogs...Oh wait...that's me & Randy :P ;D...lol!...Randy said I couldn't even hav 1 cat...That was 10 yrs. ago...I have found that men have a way of adapting to our animal insanity. :D Good luck on convincing him & if not then we'll figure out a way to get Ranger to a better place!...You have an awesome heart doghealer...I think you rock!!! ;D

Maybe it will be easier than I think, but also I am not sure about bringing home a new dog when I can't even really afford the $65 to get him out of jail!! Maybe I am just in the wrong state of mind.

: Re: Pyr's to be euthanized in Kentucky. Can anyone help??
: Kermit July 22, 2005, 08:53:50 AM
Thanks Gypsy! I know everyone is really pumped to rescue this guy, but I am having a reality check!!
Here's the scoop I just got from the shelter:
He has never had any shots. He is not neutered. He hasn't been on heartworm prevention. He's not housebroken, he has lived outside his whole life. Although he loves kids and other animals, his owners surrendered him because he "wasn't working out".
GGGGRRRRRR>>>>>>
The $65 adoption fee (no discount for a rescue group) includes neuter, rabies, 1st distemper, 1st deworming, and a heartworm test. He'll need a distemper booster and 2nd deworming, and some heartgard (assuming his test is negative) and some flea control.
Holy cow who is going to pay for all of that!!! My friends in rescue aren't ready to take on another dog, funds are tight. I'm waiting on a response from the pyr rescue group.

So if knowing all that, someone can think of a good place for him to go in a few days, I can still pick him up. Also, the receptionist stated again that a bunch of rescue groups keep calling about the pyrs. She gave me someone to contact to get the inside scoop, maybe the same guy Nina talked to? I am more inclined to let another rescue group get him who can actually pay for all his needs.
What do you guys think about all this???
: Re: Pyr's to be euthanized in Kentucky. Can anyone help??
: Nina July 22, 2005, 09:05:33 AM
I emailed vinny dog and she said that the no kill shelter in wisconsin will take him, just need to get him to Illinois. The shelter would have taken all three. So that is an option just need to get him to Illinois. When I was speaking(emailing) with Joe, he's a volunteer with the shelter that Ranger is in, he said that Ranger is used to the routine that they have the dogs in. He will go outside do his business and wait by the gate to come in. Its obvious that his pervious owners did not want to take the time to train him! Seems to me that he is perfectly trainable, Pyrs are very smart dogs, Dilbert new how to sit at 2 months and that only took 15 mins to teach. Think how easy it will be to teach Ranger. Joe did tell me that he is create trained, they do this will all the dogs so that is is easier on the new parents.

: Re: Pyr's to be euthanized in Kentucky. Can anyone help??
: Kermit July 22, 2005, 09:16:22 AM
Ok. It's good to know there is a place for him in Illinois, just a matter of getting him there. How hard could that be??  ;)   I can probably arrange to go pick him up tomorrow, but then I'd be bringing him back down south with me if I took him home...(wrong direction!)
But that is fantastic news about him being crate trained! If he fits in my crate!
Alright, I feel better about everything now.
Oh wait, he has to be neutered before I pick him up. I don't know how fast they can have that done. Monday maybe?
Alright, I need to actually work for a little while today, so I am going to do that and let this all sink in for a few hours.
Whew!

: Re: Pyr's to be euthanized in Kentucky. Can anyone help??
: Kermit July 22, 2005, 11:00:54 AM
Alright folks, it's under way. We did an over-the-phone adoption application, (and somehow I passed!) he'll get neutered on Monday (same day as Nigel incidentally) and I will pick him up on Tuesday. Pray he doesn't have kennel cough, because then he won't be able to get neutered, and boy will that complicate things!
So on Tuesday, boy you better expect lots of pictures!
So I could sure use help with the $65 adoption fee if anyone is still willing to assist. Once he is safe with me we can figure out how to get him to Illinois!  :o
Apparently they are going to do a health check on him and I'll find out his Heartworm status. Hopefully he has a clean bill of health! Please please please!!!
And I never did find out how big he is. Well, I'll find out Tuesday when I load him up in my car!
Ahhh, adventures. I'll bring my camera and photojournaliz e the rescue mission!

Doghealer..... please let me know about the adoption and confirm if you were the one who completed the phone application this morning for the shelter, as they did not give me a name. I will be more than happy to reimburse you for the adoption fees, no problem.  Are you sure you do not want to keep this beaty?  Please advise as to what you would like to do.  If you would like him to go to Wisconsin, and you would like to meet somewhere, please advise as to when and where and I will make the arrangements.  The shelter did confirm to me he would be neutered on Monday, etc and ready to be picked up on Tuesday.  Please advise and I will make whatever arrangements work best for you.

For everyone who has been watching this post, this email is awesome! It's from the guy who works at the Glasgow shelter, written to me after my application was accepted...

"You're wonderful!  I just talked with Linda Kuhn at
the shelter and she is almost in tears now that ALL THREE
of these big wonderful dogs are safe.   I tried and tried to
call the shelter this morning and it is always busy - just one
line.  The response from the internet folks has been more
than tremendous.  I have been at this for 5 years and have
NEVER had so much activity and seen people try so hard!
Again my heartfelt thanks!!!!!

: Kermit July 22, 2005, 03:34:08 PM
For the beautiful conclusion of this story, see the topic Ranger's Rescue!! YAY!!!
Oh and here is another email from the guy at the shelter...
this sums it up!

"Let me start this message by simply saying that I am proud to walk among
you. I am almost tearful as I tell each of you that Bernice and Opal go into
Rescue via a gentleman at Campbellsville, KY.  We will open the shelter Sunday
afternoon and meet him there.  They are safe.
One of you delightful people are taking Ranger, the collie/Pyr mix and a
wonderful fellow - probably my favorite of the three as he is not quite as aloof.
I have been in dog rescue and foster for 12 years now and since my
retirement in July 2000 have worked closely with BRAWA shelter in Glasgow, KY.  In
those years I have posted a number of appeals to help wonderful pets and most have
saved that pet's life.  Usually there are two or three responses and one or
two are willing to work with me, the other is usually a comment that it looks
more like a cocker spaniel to them than a Saint Bernard... ;-)    Not to offend anyone
but at the shelter here they call me "Mr. Shindler"  after the "Shindler's List"
movie. So I've been around for a while, doing most of this shelter's Petfinder
postings.
In all my years I have NEVER had such a helpful, good-natured, willing and
selflesss explosion of helpful emails.  The shelter had to ask for Volunteers to man
their telephone line as concerned Great Pyrenees lovers lined up for info.  The
fact that email is done from volunteer homes rather than the shelter where the
action is causes delays in responses.  I call the shelter for updates and
then respond.  For those of you that waited, I apologize as I couldn't get thru
to get info either <smile>.  Annoying?  No!   With your gracious help we saved
3 lives for 3 wonderful dogs that can't help being big dogs.    Big dogs
take up more precious shelter space so they are the first to be euthanized when
space gets tight - and it is  VERY tight.
The three dogs are safe.  I learned a lot about the breed from you.  I knew
relatively nothing about Great Pyrs  and, would you believe, the Akbash
folks were extremely helpful in my education as well.

Since there was a call for volunteers at the shelter to man the phone and
the volunteer turnout was good  I will also report that all three big dogs
have been groomed  and now they look great!   Bernice is more the people
dog while Opal is aloof, however even Opal enjoyed the grooming I am told.
Ranger just loves having people around, he don't care what they do as long
as he is in the middle of it.

I've taken your email addresses from a multitude of recent emails and if, in
scanning over the header, you don't know each other, you really should
meet, at least by email if not personally.  EVERY ONE OF YOU have helped
in one way or another, some of you have lived thru this "torture" of knowing
that three dogs were going to die - and soon- with me.  God Bless you all
for your kindness.  This from me    and  from three, now safe, big dogs.

I am crying so hard I can barely see the screen, but I have to thank all of you from the bottom of my heart for saving these wonderful furbabies!!  When I saw the original posting for these dogs on another site, I was heartsick knowing that I'm in Florida and didn't think there was anything I could really do to make a difference.  How silly of me!  Just posting for help on Big Paws proved that there are many Angels among us willing to save the lives of the one's they can.  Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!

I am in Arizona in the Phoenix and there are lots of pyrs here. They do better in the heat than you would think. The people here love pyrs and they don't stay in rescue too long. We have 160 rescue groups on petfinder here and many really good rescuers.

Hi Demi!...If you go to the B.P.'s home page & scroll down you should see "The Dog House" which is the index of recent posts...You'll find "Rangers Rescue" there.
