: My Poor Zero *updated aug 11*
: Gevaudan_Jo August 06, 2007, 07:40:40 PM
Alot of you don't know, but some of you do, know the troubles we've been having with Zero. He and Memphis will fight and so we have them perminately separated in our home with gates and other things. Well, lately Zero just sees Memphis through the gate and he goes nuts. Memphis ALWAYS lets out a huge grumble and than Zero will attack the gate... Zero cut his foot open the other day with trying to jump on the gate to reach at memphis. Now, im not saying its ALL Zero. Memphis will also, put his head over the gate and start taunting Zero, by growling and barking. they hate each other, plain and simple! Well, its gotten to the point we have to even block access to the gate, because we are afraid that zero will hurt himself trying to get over the gate. So Thursday Zero is going in to be neutered, and im freaking out. because he has an arithmea... And if this doesnt help him, we are going to think over the options of rehoming Zero or putting him down. Please keep zero in your thoughts for Thursday...

Ah that is a real shame for both Zero and Memphis. But it's not unusal. Is Memphis in tact? I hope having Zero neutered does the job and they can live together. It's never easy giving up a pet. My thoughts are with you and keep us posted.

I had no idea that all this was going on!!  I hope that you can get some relief.  Is Zero only like that with males?  I am not familiar with the breed, but are the males typically not tolerant of other males?

Awww, that sucks! I had no idea! How old are Zero and Memphis? Who is newer? Have they always had problems with each other or is it a new development? Wow, that is just too heartbreaking. Keep us posted...

Thank you all for the words of encouragement. When zero goes into a mood, the only way to stop him is by pulling him away from his position (near the gate) and putting him in his kennel to calm down. We have taken him to Obedience classes, and i Really prefer not to take zero. His behavior is not very good in public, near children, etc.

Zero is Like this with memphis, and a select few males. he was good with my moms doberman. Not with my aunts Heinz 57.
Memphis is now 4 years old, zero is 3. we have had both boys as wee baby puppies. they had their first fight when we moved back to Cobalt, from the other house we were in... After Zeus *our dane* crossed the bridge. it wasnt a bad fight. and they were fine after wards. a few months later, they faught again.  the same thing.... a few months after, a bad fight broke out, and memphis almost took zeros eye out, and zero had left memphis' leg very swollen.  we seperated them. months later, JIGSAW knocked the barrier down, and zero went in the room memphis was in... i got down stairs just in time to see zero lunge on memphis' leg. Memphis took zero by the head, shook... almost taking zeros ear off. zero let go. we got a stronger gate..... So far- no fights in 6 months...

Wow I'm so sorry your having problems between them! I have a friend that had three hybrid wolves and it sounds like what happened with the Alpha crossed the bridge. The other two remaining were fighting over who was now the Alpha.

Maybe a behaviorist can come in and help the dogs establish a pack order or something? It sounds like a sad and scary situation, to have your pets at each other like that. Poor pups and poor you!

Raging male hormones. But he is doing very well, hes being annoying right now. and i give him tons of hugs and kisses for each and everyone of yous :)

Rather than see you have to give up one of your babies, here's an idea you might want to try.  It will take time, effort and consistency, and at least one extra person to help you, but I am pretty sure that given the other options, it will be worth it to fix this issue.

First, you would need to figure out exactly at what distance the two dogs stop reacting to each other. Is it based on sight- Where if they can see each otherthey react, even if separated by 100 yards or so? Or do they not react to each other until they are within a certain distance of each other?  (Note- this may be different for each of the dogs)

Second- figure out what kind of treat each dog considers their favorite- it can be ANYTHING, as long as to that dog, it is the best thing in the whole world.

For the first day, you and your helper each take one dog, and that dog's special treat, and head off around the block or something in opposite directions. (You need to be very aware of your dog's body language, and estimate before starting, just how far apart you will have to be.) The plan is to meet head-on, but stopping before either dog has the chance to react, (including starting to tense up.)

1.) Just before either dog would normally react, (Make sure you both stop JUST BEFORE the first dog is about to react.) each of you stop and start shoving treats into each dog's mouth, as fast as you can, without causing them to choke.  (Use small pieces of treat, so the dog does not need to stop and chew before swallowing- ie. hot dog cut into quarters length-wise, then sliced)  While shoving treats in the dog's mouth, praise him heavily.

2.) After about 5 minutes, stop the treats, turn your dog around, and head back the way you came.  Plan ahead so you do not meet again when arriving back at the starting point- one dog should arrive first and be put away before the other dog is even in sight.

The next few days, do the same thing over again.

3.) When they both stop paying any attention to each other when you approach the "treat place" go about 10 feet closer, and do the exact same thing. Repeat daily until they no longer pay any attention to each other.

3.) A.  If either dog reacts at all during this procedure, back up to a place where he stops reacting, and begin again from there.  You do not want to force them if they are having a bad day, so pay attention to their body language.

4.) Repeat each of the previous steps, getting closer and closer to each other, until you can get them within 10 feet of each other without them reacting to each other (they should be looking at you expecting treats rather than caring what the other dog is doing).

5.) Start working with them in your own back yard. Again, if they are reacting to each other, you are too close together.  Repeat the above steps again until the dogs are not reacting to each other. If you do not have a yard to work in, try a local dog park, a neighbor's field (ask permission first, of course).

You will need to repeat all of the steps in order in various places before you can begin the steps in your own house, because dogs do not generalize- just because they no longer react to each other when on the other side of the block, or in the park, that doesn't mean they will not react to each other in your own yard or your house.  You have to stick with it, and keep repeating the procedure in various places, and then finally indoors, in your own house.

By the time you get to that point, they should start to be happy to see the other dog, because it means good treats. I have used this procedure, and ended up with the dogs being best friends, because being near each other resulted in good things happening (ie. treats and praise.)

Give it a try, and see if it fixes the problems with your guys before you even think about rehoming one, or worse. Good Luck!

I was going to suggest basically the same thing Imani's mom suggested.  I know of several people who have tried this, and if you stick with it and don't rush it, it can work wonders.

Good luck with Memphis and Zero.  I hope things can be worked out between them.
