: Where'd you get your dog?
: dober_gurl July 21, 2005, 08:36:02 PM
I don't know if this has ever been posted on here before, but I thought I'd do it. I want to know where you got your dog(s).
Marty, our miniature daschund, came from my adoptive sister's dad. He wanted to get her something special so he got her a dog ::)(believe it or not but Marty actually hates my little sister! We're working on it though). We love the little brat very much and have had him since about August. He's a little over a year now.
Alex, our miniature poodle, came from a puppy mill. The guy had to get rid of all his dogs so he gave us like 6-7 of them and a couple to my aunt. We found them homes but Alex was a little off so my mom didn't think it would be good to adopt him out, but if we we're to find an older person that's by themselfs, Alex would definatly do good there! We've had him since I think November and he's 2 years old now.
Maggie, our doberman, came from a backyard breeder, he gave her to us. I don't know why but we've had her for 4 years now, we got her when she was 6 weeks old, she what you would call a junkyard dobie because of her size.
Mandi, our other dobie, came from the humane society, she's 3 years old. Has had 2 litters of puppies and was going to be put to sleep because she's heartworm positive. We're going to get her treated and then was she's done with treatment and healing she'll go in to be spayed. Total sweetie!!

Samson came from a byb but she does raise the dogs for LGD's ( she has her own sheep farm) & Sam's mother only had 3 litters in her life & is now fixed...I was also able to get references from people who bought pups from all the litters so I didn't feel too bad about getting him...Our new little girl is coming from Jackie Wood of Tanimara Great Pyrenees who is a member here & resides in S. Central Missourri...I am loving getting one of her dogs as she is a responsible breeder who I respect very much!

All pure bred dogs I have had, that I got when they were puppies, I have gotten from good breeders after lots of research. The other dogs have all been rescues, either from the shelter or rescue groups or from people who didnt want the dog no more and decided to have it put down. So I guess basically two kinds of places for me, either breeder or rescue

Well...

I was living in North Carolina, and met a woman doing rescue. Helped her out a bit. One day she called me and said that there was this super sweety at the Raleigh Animal Shelter that was going to be euthanized because he had heartworms, and he had been there for a month, and nobody would adopt him. So, one of the volunteers at the shelter agreed to pay for the treatment if we could find him a foster. I agreed even though I didn't know a THING about him. (The boyfriend agreed too, but was REALLY reluctant and bitchy about the whole thing!) So, we went to get him, and he was the BIGGEST SPAZ! He was about a year old, and in BAAAAAAAAAAAD need of a grooming! Big clumps of hair kinda hanging all over, and he was pretty skinny. BUT, his head was HUGE! So, we started calling him Big Head.

Well, the heartworm treatment took two months. (It was a severe case) Everytime I found a potential adopter and brought them over to meet him, Mark (boyfriend) found something wrong with them. It started to occur to me that maybe he was falling in love. Well, it was true. So, we kept him and he became Cabeza. (Spanish for "head")

We got Harley from the Humane Society, as soon as Tim saw her he fell in love she walked over to us, he put his hand in the cage and started licking away, and looked up at us with those beautiful take me home eyes. And we did. To this day she still licks us like mad. We got Harley in march of 04 then on Dec11 I walked into Petsmart to pick up some presents for Harley and Joe(our cat) and a rescue organization called CARES was there so of course I walk over to take a look, there was many puppies but I saw one, super cute and clumsy, I just fell in love. I walk back over to the entrance and Tim walks in, I told him that there was dogs here for adoption he looks at me and we walk over and we spend some time with him and then I just couldn't leave with out him. Just as we were adopting Dilbert, another couple was coming back to get him. Now I can't imagine our lives without either of them.

Both Apache & Kiya were from breeders. Chazzy was adoped from a rescue. She spent the first 6months in a crate, we call her our special child, she's really not playing with a full deck. She didn't know how to play when we first got her. Thats one of the reasons Billy wouldn't let me get anything but a baby.

Zeus came from a "Free Puppy" sign on the side of the road. Went in, fell in love with him, and brought him home that day.

Apollo was a con run by my husband and my eldest son. We were taking some old plywood and stuff to the dump (the pound is less than a block away) and my husband turns to my son (all innocent like) and says "Hey Jon, you want to go look at some puppies. We'll only *look* thought, k?"

Yeah, right.

no sooner did we walk into the kennel area than my son was on his knees, with his arm stuck all the way to his shoulders into one of the cages, and this gold ball of fuzz had his huge paws wrapped around his arm, holding on for all he was worth. That was the end of it, there was no way Jon was leaving without him. I got the tears, the pleading, begging and the hubby was no better.

We walked out with him that day, and as soon as we got home, he latched onto me and has been "Mommy's Boy" ever since.

well.  quick history.  mom and dad got "sugar foot" for stacy when she was like 5 or something..... .best dog EVER.....when i was like 8(?) my sister kelly was in "pass pets"...the chesterfield shopping center pet store and saw a puppy....she MADE my mom go up there, and after three hours of him loving us, we took him home.  about 3 years later, we wanted another one, and found bailey in the papers.....got her, had a litter of puppies (DONT BLAME ME or lecture)....had to move from our house to an apartment, and therefore had to sell the big dogs.  which meant sam and bailey....and we sold all but one of the puppies (mr green) who later turned into tyler.  tyler was my boy, the love of my life, died in 2001 of lymphoma, and i never wanted another dog ever.  my mom and sisters went on a "make nicki happy" mission, and found cody and bought him.  once i found out about him, i didn't want him.  they brought him home, and i wanted nothing to do with him.  then one day, he was all loving me and looking at me really intense, and my heart just broke.  loved him more than my life ever since.  i have wanted to have him a brother since i got him.....but finally decided december last year i was getting him one for christmas.  found angus in the paper from a breeder up in fresno....(I ADMIT I DID NO HOMEWORK, it was a split second decision), called her, told her i would be there the following weekend, and went and got him.  my life has been horrible ever since.   ;)

We got Bella from a backyard breeder too. We were looking for a Newf breeder and I called our vet to see if theyhad any Newf breeders who are clients, or asked that they call us if they knew of available Nefs.  A few months later we got a call, and it turned out that the breeder was only 5 minutes away. Here in MI, the majority of the Newf breeders are anywhere from 1 hour to 5 hours away. We went to "look" (come on, there is no such thing! ;D)  at the puppies and I wish I could have taken all 6 with me!!  This breeder had all clearances on mom and dad, but didnt offer a guarantee.  We've been lucky with Bella. She has a great great temperment and hasnt had any health issues yet.

Now for Rocco, we did more research and spoke to several breeders, as well as breeders we met at the Detroit Dog Show. We ended up going with a breeder in MI, near South Bend Indiana. What fun it was going to get Rocco. The breeder had a lot of Newfs, some were pets, some she was breeding, but they kennels were immaculate and it was obvious she spent a lot of time each day with these dogs. I could tell by the way they all responded to her. We met Rocco's parents. Rocco's dad is Canadian, and was brought from Quebec last year. I guess when they got him, he could only understand French so he was taught Engish commands and now knows both! Newfies are so smart :)

I got my 4 Year Old Great Dane from a rescue group in Riverside County, CA (I can't mention their name in public)

He is an absolute DREAM dog ... I couldn't ask for a better dog even if I made him myself.

Puck  the rotti we got from the breeder who also did rescue for rottis. We call him our rescue dog of sorts. He was returned to the breeder because his owners had divorced and only kept the female. Poor boy howled every night at the breeders ( he was so lonley for people). He is such a dufus. But he is MY dufus and I love him and he loves me ( and everyone else.) He is the best with my daughter.I can't imagine not having had him in our lives.
Farley the Vizsla- we got from a breeder in Rockwood Ontario.

Here is the breakdown on my former and current guys...

Cabo - came from the Humane Society.  At the time I adopted him, he had been there almost 4 months, which was an incredibly long time for them to keep a dog.  At the time I got him, they were actually considering having to euthanize him because he was starting to "shut down".  He had been "Pet of the Week" on the radio and in the newspaper, and had actually been adopted once and then returned.  The people who originally adopted him claimed he barked too much when left in the backyard alone all day long.  Huh, go figure!

Ranger - adopted from the Helen Woodward Animal Center, where he was a transfer from a shelter in Arizona.  I talked to the woman who runs the shelter in AZ, and she said that if she was remembering the correct dog, he was a St. Bernard/Brittany Spaniel mix that was relinquished by a doctor that didn't have time for him.  I saw his goofy face with tongue hanging out the side of the mouth on Helen Woodward's website and just had to go see him.  It was obvious that he had not been socialized or exposed to a lot ot things, as he was quite shy and suspicious at first (all signs that I should NOT have brought him home).  He was barking and posturing in the back of his kennel, but as soon as I squatted down and spoke nicely to him he turned into a big grinning, tail waving, tongue-lolling, please-be-my-friend-and-don't-hurt-me, belly-crawling oaf and he won me over for better or worse.  :D

Gwen - Scott found her abandoned on the street in front of his apartment when she was just a puppy.  He took her in and posted signs, etc., but no one ever stepped up to claim her and by that time he was happy that no one did.  She is very protective of Scott and thinks the sun rises and sets on him.  She is our "guard dog" and is always the one to bark and tell us when she thinks anything is out of place, or that there is someone walking by the house, etc.  But weirdly, she is great with strangers, with the exception of homeless people, for whom she has a great dislike for whatever reason.  Once when Scott was walking her as a puppy, a guy remarked on what a good looking dog she was and offered to trade a bag of crack for her!

Sadie was originally bought by a young lass who very shortly afterwards discovered she was pregnant.  After the baby was born she suffered from Post Natal Depression and eventually burned down her house and was committed to the mental health care system.

Her elderly mum (70s) took Sadie and the baby, but a young Akita Alpha bitch is too much for an elderly lady, and so she asked her landlady (who had three Rotties) if she would take the dog.

Frenchie took the dog, but made it clear that she would be rehoming it elsewhere because Rotties and Akitas are not really designed to be best friends.  ::)

Frenchie called me as she knew I had previously had a Sibe and asked it Sadie could come to live here.

By the time this beautiful two year old mutt came to us we were her fourth home in four months.  She spent the first two months sitting in a corner, hardly moving unless we took her out for walkies or it was meal time.  After three months, she decided to test us by ripping up the settee and a few shoes, but once she realised that she wasn't going to be kicked out again, the destructive behaviour stopped (about 3 weeks in total).

Now, she is the sweetest thing in the world.  She is very curious about everything and tends to scare the wits out of people by suddenly appearing beside them in the park to see what they are doing.  Her other trick is to jump up and put her head and paws through the open windows of cars parked by the side of the road.  I am quite surprised that no-one has had a heart attack yet.  She is brilliant with people, particularly children, although like most Akitas, she is not always good with other dogs.

One of our customers at the video store came by with a litter of rottweiler, lab. mixes from her ranch.  She was asking $50 for them and Niki ran to me licking and shaking her whole body, especially her backside like rotts do - I lost control.  Offered her $50 in free movie rentals to seal the deal.  The rest is history.  I never let her have any pups because that is the way I feel but I really am sorry  :'( because she would have been a very happy mom.  She adopted baby kittens and would not let anybody near them.  Now also if a ewe abandons her lamb, which they do sometimes, Niki adopts them too.

Where I got my furbabies
Katie JoJo (Brat) I rescued from near death Sept 2003 in  Missouri..The trailer Park I was living in she was tied outside with no food or water or shelter just skin and bones...I took her home with me and fed her some bread and gave her some water shortly after there was a knock on my door it was the police asking if I stole a puppy I answered truthfully that I did take a puppy and then asked him if he wanted to see her, then her previous owner come up and stated"She stole my pup!" well I showed him Katie and he turned to the other lady and stated "Ma'am if you don't want to go to jail for animal cruelty if I were you I would forget about even having this pup" so she left and he asked to hold Katie and I allowed it and he stated to me"Ma'am you're a great person for rescueing her from near death" after the police officer left I packed Katie up and went into town to Dollar General to buy her some puppy food then I took her to the vet....Oct 18th of the same year we moved back home to Indiana and she's one healthy puppy & celebrated her 2nd birthday in July......Kati e JoJo is my life

Sassy I rescued in Wildwood Florida about 13 years ago..I came home from work one night and my room-mate told me there was funny sounds coming from outside so I went to investigate and I discovered a black trashbag moving when I opened it up I found Sassy in it with her eyes still closed....I took her to the vet and the vet stated she's 3/4 pit 1/4 lab....She's also my life and I love them both dearly

Raven my dobie was owned by some aquantances of ours that were neglecting her-11 months old, 36 lbs of bones and hide, kept in the basement in a crate except when their granddaughter came over to tease and torment her. I blackmailed them into giving her to me, and have not regretted it once in the last 9 years...
Merlin, our dane came from a breeder.
Strider, our dane/wolfhound was rescued from a high-kill animal control at 7 weeks old on his last night on this earth. They found his IW Momma in a ditch on a county road with 10 puppies, and when they tried to track down the owner found that he had moved to Florida, and left the pregnant dog and the dane Dad in the care of a developmentall y diabled nieghbor. When the nieghbor figured out that the owner wasn't coming back to get them, and he didn't want them he let them go, figuring that they could fend for themselves. Dad was found nearby on the side of the road, victim of a traffic fatality.
Some people really suck.

Cowboy was rescued by a friend of mine from a couple who kept him in a crate at their condo in the desert so "he wouldn't get the condo dirty".  They had been "water training" him at the Salton Sea (a putrid lake).  He has arthritis in his front knees and has cluster-seizure epilepsy.  The breeder wanted him shipped back to NY, but I convinced her that I would love him like no other dog on the planet....and I do!  Chester, we got from a breeder in Texas and I carried him home on my lap on the airplane.  I think all the flight attendants thought I was a weird woman who loved stuffed animals (TRUE!) The two of them are the best things to happen to us since the last kid went to college ;D

I got Kiah from a breeder by St. Louis, MO. We drove to get her and she did very well in the car. It was an eight hour drive for us. She was in the passenger seat with me on the floor and in my lap. She spent most of the time sleeping with her head behind the middle consel. The air conditioning vent was back there. She loved it!

K from oldest to youngest...... .

Blue (Bluetick Coonhound)- Came from a local animal control shelter. We went to an area adoption event (Meet your best friend at the Zoo) to get a cat to add to our Rottweiler and cat we already owned. While I was filling out the paperwork for the cat my husband, son, and nephew went "looking". They came back and asked me to look at the dog they had saw. My husband had always wanted a Bluetick... We went and talked to the AC found out they had picked him up as a stray over 9 months before and this was his last chance at a home. He loved the kids so home he went...12 years later he is a happy 14 year old dog.
Lucci (Vizsla)- I met Lucci at a local pet supply store when she was 6 months old..after researching the breed for over a year, as soon as I saw her I cornered her owner to ask who the breeder was. Being in the time before finding a puppy was as easy as a click of a mouse Vizslas where hard to find. Ended up he was the breeder (not a BYB either imagine that)and he was looking to place her on a co-own. All it took was her getting in my lap and a kiss and the deal was sealed...she is now 9 years old.
May (Vizsla)- I got wind of May being available from a friend. She had been contact by Mays owner in hopes of finding her a home since he was no longer able to care for her and had sold the others. We went "just to look" ...after seeing the conditions she was being kept in she went home that day. She has been here 7 months and is the best looking I have ever done:)
Cruiser- (Rat Terrier... not a big paw but thinks he is)- We were given Cruiser from a local Petstore due to he had severe pneumonia and was almost to the no sell age. He is now 7 years old.

I guess you could call Henry a rescue too. ;) We really wanted a bully, but we couldn't find one... I had done my research extensively and got nowhere. So one day I went to buy some food for my two "mojos" ;) and there he was! The space they had him in was really cramped and I really didn't want to leave him there. So we took him home and he's been a great dog, I still regret where he came from,  but the store assured me over and over that he wasn't from a puppymill... ::)

all our ridgebacks are either our breeding with a good friend who breeds top RR's, and we bought Tsavo to inprove on our line here. top RR,s but differnt backgrounds.ne ed to outcross for strength. our line is getting too tight for my liking, some say it's fine but i will have sounder pups, as i out cross and the match will pull faults,,,,,,,,hopefully.   we chose tsavo over many other breeders, and spent many hours going over all the family tree and other pups in the litter. we had pick # 1,,,,,,,,i think we did a great job, he is very handsome and even temperd dog, with lots of spunk and playfullness.a nd has already learned that a sofa is not only for humans, lol.
he is wonderful and not so little any more. his older brother is 29 in and 125 lbs. finnished ch. as a pup
very nice lines, and our tigre the fila, was a rescue, sort of. the former owner could not controll her, but would only give her up to a good home
so   tigre lives with us and ummmmmmmm multi ridgebacks
we over socialized her, and she is pretty calm for a Fila

Most of mine have either been foundlings, orphans or rescues.  Of the 3 that I have now, 2 are from rescues and 1 showed up on a neighbor's door as a very young puppy (probabaly just weaned).  In order earliest to latest order and with 2 special mentions at the end:

1) Puck - the foundling; he showed up on a neighbor's door not quite 4 yeas ago (can't believe it's been that long).  I had Spot (very dog aggressive) at the time and Carol (the neighbor) thought he might do well with a puppy, since I was considering getting a second dog with Spot aging.  Well, spot did take to him, so Puck stayed.   We think he's a Rott-Chow mix.  Puck is my ADHD dog... completely scatterbrained and bouncing off the wall, though at about 4 he is starting to settle down some (whew! finally).  Loves to swim.  He is very dog agressive and although he likes to dance a round an show off to people, he quickly get over it and moves on to other things.  Knows all the major commands and will do them if he is in the mood -maybe. Puck's pic:

2) Feste - All Dane All Heart.  He came from a rescue in Ft Walton Beach, Fl (about 2 hours east of Mobile).  Is apparently a well -bred boy, as he has a breeder's tatoo in his ear, but I've not been able to learn which breeder the tattoo goes to.   I had just lost my previous G. D. a couple of months before, and I was looking through petfinder.com, not intending to actually get another dog at the time, when I came across him.  He was so goofy looking in the picture that I couldn't resist.  I had to go see him.  He had been through 3 homes in less than a year with 2 trips to the local high-kill shelter in between.  All this and he was less than or right at, 1 year old.  Was scared of his own shadow when I met him but he has a charming personality and sweet disposition that still managed to show through.  I adopted him and brought him home that day (yes, I had gone to 'just look').  Feste's pic:

3) Chance - the foster Great Labra-Dane Retriever.  - I am fostering Chane for the same rescue that Feste came from.   He is a Charmer of the First Order.  Just as sweet as you would imagine a lab-dane mix to be and very playful... also digs lots of holes and chews up stuff left and right (though this seems to be waning (yay!)).  If we find him a good home then I will be happy; but everyone here likes him, so if we don't that is fine too.  Chance's pic:

Special Mention 1: Spot:  My sweet boy.  He was adopted at about 3 years old from a pet adoption at a local grooming/boarding facility.  He was 1/2 Lab and 1/2 Australian Shepherd.  Absolutely adored going to the beach.  Totally devoted and protective of me. The only thing he was afraid of was thunder.  When he passed from cancer at 10, it broke my heart.
Spot's pic:
(http://F:\1 Tom's Filing Cabinet\Photos\Dauphin Island\DI Beach (Spot) 050.jpg)

Special Mention 2: Alexander: My 1st Dane- I got Alex from a vet in Louisiana who had rescued him.  Alex only lived to 3 1/2 years old.  The 1st 2  1/2  years of his life were terrible.  He had been abused (burns and someone tried to yank his tongue out of his head) and neglected and when the people finally took him to a vet, when they were informed that he had stage 3 or 4 heartworms, they advised the vet to euthanise him, as they weren't going to pay to treat him.  The vet refused and got them to sign over custody of him.  She then treated him from her own pocket and when he was strong enough began to look for a home for him.  A mutual friend brought us together.  Alex still had some recuperating to do when I brought him home, but he was so gentle and trusting that he stole my heart and that of anyone else who met him.  He loved to go anywhere where there were people and other dogs.  Because of that he ended up on the TV news and in the paper.  My friends all called him the newshound because of that.  He loved having his picture taken and would search out any camera wherever he was.  Unfortunately, the heartworms had left him with an enlarged heart and in the end, it just couldn't hold out.  He died of heartfailure the day before my birthday this year.  His pic was taken the day before he died:

O.k. for some reason the pics didn't post  the way I inserted them, so here they are in order:

Cody was from some BYB in Indiana (we got 'em when he's 3, and no longer wanted for studding)

Nikki was off www.Craiglist. org

Judge was a late Christmas gift from my Sister in North Carolina. She bought my little sister and I each a puppy. She picked them out and bought them and we made the 24hr trip from Northern Ontario to North Carolina to pick them up. This was in May of 2004. He was the best Christmas present ever!!

I found Tulsa on Petfinders.com .
There's another thread on these forums that will explain her circumstances.
She has become a Major fixture in my life, and a source of wonderful enjoyment.
She would give her life for me, and I am obligated to do the same.
I don't need a wife, I have a Real Dog!

We got Sadie from a breeder about 2 hours from our home.  She puked 3 times on the way home and everytime she's in a car now, she starts foaming at the mouth and drools horribly!

I'm a Pick-Up guy.
So Tulsa rides in back, secured with a tether.
When she see's other dogs, she barks and her tail goes crazy!
People and dogs that get barked at, sometimes smile and wave, sometimes wave the single digit, and curse. I just put my head out the window and shout, "Shut Up", covers most situations!

How funny!  I have a very good friend who has seven Newfoundlands who says the same thing about not needing a husband!  I guess you could take it that it takes seven Newfs to make one man ;)

Taz was rescued from a neglectful family and they were going to put him to sleep. I saw an ad for him, and since I had been looking for a Siberian Husky to foster, I offered to do that. I ended up falling in love with him, which is no surprise, and now he's mine! I have no regrets, he's the greatest dog.

Rocco came from Petfinder.  A rescue in Northern Oh had some Rott puppies.  I went and looked at the pups and had to have the only male.  When I got him he was 7 weeks and 7 lbs of black fur.  He grew quickly.

Maia came from a breeder in Columbus, Ohio.  I had planned to breed her but she didn't make the cut.  I love her the same.

Ok, I'm jealous.
BTW, are there any dog parks here you were/are fond of?

There is one off Mason Montgomery Rd on Old Irwin Simpson I think, across from the new plaza with Abuelo and McAlisters

Another is in Loveland off Columbia rd, right before Union Cemetary.

There is another down by River Bend.
