A cutie pie, and a total heart break when you know he has only hours to live. But once again, I am on the wrong coast. And unfortunately for him, statistics say that most danes that are mixed with anything, have a harder time being adopted. Guesses are that the ones who want a dane want a dane and not a mix. I hate it though the poor guy did not ask to be mixed with anything. And please dont take this as my personal opinion, that I think that they are less in any way. It is just the sad statistic that breeds like danes, mastiffs, dobies and rotties are for some reason rather hard to adopt out when they are mixes.
I will keep all I have crossed and hopefully a sweet soul from the west coeas will come forward and give him a home.
Have you contacted any dane rescues, some of them do work with mixes too?

Are there any Great Dane rescues anywhere near that area?...He is a good looking dog but they sure don't give alot of info. to go on except for to say he is scared...The poor thing...I will be sending prayers for his rescue.

I hope someone can help Lil Rascal! I called and he is still available (as of 2 pm today). There is a Great Dane rescue in Northern California (http://groups.msn.com/GreatDaneRescueofNorthernCalifornia), but I don't know anything about them. I'm too far away to get there, and I haven't been able to reach the people at the rescue. Anyone else have any luck?

Okay, I finally got a hold of a person at the rescue. They have someone in the area, and will try to rescue him. The only catch is that he has to be enough like a Great Dane that they can place him. Fingers and paws crossed! :)
If anyone hears anything, please let us know!

I'm just hoping that he'll be Dane-like enough that they can help him out! I don't know who else to call since he's listed as a Great Dane mix. Poor guy looks so scared.

Hi everyone !!! I just called up there and they said he is still there!! They say his paperwork says he is a pittbull mix. I know they are located 2 hours from san fran....Its a 100.00 adoption fee...adn they are open untill 4:30 pm... he is sooo cute I cant help ...I have 3 children and my Zima is not good with other dogs!!! I wish I could it is sooo sad!

I would love to help by calling them, but the long distance we had, well it was real good especially since I call sweden at least a couple of times a week, they are apperantly having problems, for about a week now I have gotten the "your number can not be connected, please check the number and try again" Bad thing is that we have all the long distance with them, I have left messages on their machine and they called back, but we have yet to see some improvement. I would hate to change though, they have the best fees overseas.
AND Chris left for the beach with MY cell phone (it wasnt enough with his own >:()
So anyway, all I can call is local, great help, since I hardly ever call local
I will write an email too though, maybe it helps if they recieve more letters.

Tell them, you belong to a group and a lot of people are working on trying to get him into a rescue or foster home. Could they please give him some extra time, so we can at least get answers from the rescues that have been contacted and also see if we have any way of finding a foster home thru the group.
That should be all you have to say, and also ask lots and lots of questions about disposition, previous situation, have they seen any difficulties at all with him, how is he with dogs, cats, kids, well just everything you can think of that will make it easier for people to know if they can foster this dog or not.

Okay geeeeeeeze.... . I think I totally made a booboo here. You are not calling the shelter are you? If you call the shelter, you can use something like what I poste, if you are calling the rescue group well lol...... please dont use that.
If you call the rescue group, say something like BPO has a lot of concerned people, we have and still are trying to find home/foster home for this boy, but also found them on a search on internet, do they have any way of helping this guy out, he is really really going on borrowed time. Could they please call the shelter and maybe arrange something, if they do need any help, maybe we here could help with something even if we cant find a home at least not right now.
I am sorry if I totally messed you up by thinking you were calling the shelter.

OK I just got off the phone with Kristen the kennel manager at the shelter and she said that someone is coming to look at him tomorrow so he is safe until then, she said that she will call me if this person does not show up, and it sound like they won't put him to sleep, if they know we can get him to another place. I also left a message with Pro life so I am just waiting to hear back from them.
Any other help would be great, idea's ect???

You guys are so awesome! I can't begin to tell you how happy I am that you were able to get the dog off of death row. BPO rocks! You girls are the best! No one would ever beleive how wonderful you are and how much you truly care about the health and welfare of animals. You all need some sort of medal!

I just found a shelter in Sacramento that has rescued animals from the shelter in Merced that Lil Rascal is in, I jsut emailed them, so if he doesn't get adopted today hopefully they can take him in!!!

I have sent them a cople of emails, I did a cross from one of the rescues I work for. Sometimes it is easier to get respons when you throw "Case Manager" around lol...... Not always does it have an impact at all, but we have before had situations where it at least dont hurt to use what you have. And when it comes to animals and rescue them, well I have no shame I guess.
I hope they get back to any of us soon.

I got a reply from Second Chance Rescue and the Program Coordinator is a BPO member!! She gave me few other rescue names and is forwarding my email to other prople! There foster homes are full but she said she would see what she could do. Pretty cool huh?

Now BPO should start our own rescue, take up applications for who could possibly foster, who are willing to help with transports, stive to make it a 503 group and do some major rescuing, maybe even spec. in dogs that are on deathrow and has no other place to turn. Well now I am just doing a happy rambling lol

OH and Peggy if you know a no kill sheter in your area that could take him in, then we could see if people can help with the transport to get him there. I am not familiar with California, I've just been looking at a map and internet and emailing all the shelters I can find

I can help transport. I would be happy to foster but we are going on vacation on Aug. 16th and again in October. After our October trip, I will be looking for a pup, maybe rescue. I have the room (acreage) to foster but I am not sure my fencing is good enough for such a large dog. Actually once our vacations are over, I would love to foster. hmmm Let me know what I can do.

Thanks Peggy, that helps out sooo much, now we jsut need to find a place for him to go. I emailed hop a long and CASF and home at last, as well, so they will be getting quite a few emails from us BPO members! The only respose I got back so far is from second chance, and so far it seems that there foster homes are full. But lets keep optimistic, we've saved all the animals that have been posted on here, and I know we can save this one too! ;D

I also found a group called people for pets, I am not familiar with CA but at least they have the same area code. I sent an email and got one of them automated responses, "thank you for your interest in people for pets, we will reply within 48 hours" I sure hope they are faster than 48 hours.

Well, Valley Animal Center does cats only. I told her about the Dane and she referred me to Gentle Giants - OMG - in southern Calif. When I inquired on their reputability she just said, well no charges have been filed yet. The other number is ARF and they state they are full. I have to go to work soon so will check back probably after 5pm.

HMM I think that I may be on to something I found a rescue place called BAD RAP and they rescue pittbulls and mixes ect, and when Nicole called the shelter they said that he is a pitt mix??? So I will email them and see what happens.

Nina, I found a group called Animal Friends Connection, I checked their website out and they suggest a phonecall rather than an email when you have a pet in eager need.

GREAT NEWS EVERYONE!!! our lil rascle is a lil rasclette!! Its a GIRL!! lol She was also mircrochiped.. .... which buys her 6 more days.... Yeahhhh I spoke with sharon shelter coordanator and she said she is very friendly and not dog aggressive! Also she that they do alot of transporting if we can find a foster??? yeah yeah yeah... I gave her the BPO web site and ummmm ummm I think recruieted our first contact for our rescue idea lol!!!! They said they try not put them down and will help out in anyway so they dont have too! SO We might have more puppies headed our way!! She also said she doesnt think she is all pit that she looks like a dane and she will take some more pics of her tomorrow... I am so happy about this! Sharron said she would keep me posted she has my email and my house number and will keep me updated... she was very nice. She really was happy we wanted to help her! She keept talking about how good of a dog she was! I know for a fact that she cannot be adopted out untill the 5 days are up because they have to try to contact her past owners!! They have tried to call and no one has answered soo they are putting a hanger on their dor today... They have 5 days to come and get her! She says she doubts it because she was found in the drug section of town!!

I think you are right Nina, I really like the idea a BPO rescue, a lot of all kinds of red tape we had to go through, but find foster spaces, have a separate site or an addition to this one where you can see the dogs, have a transportation network, well you know...... wouldnt that be great?

LOL Yes SHE is a girl...they said the animal control said he was a she...... sharron said dont count on the owners because of where she was found so I think that is a good idea to keep looking!! I think we should start a rescue...I dont have a clue on how or what to do but tell me and I'll do it!! lol If you hear from any rescue for her let thme know THEY will transport!!

That is soo true, all it takes is using our resourses of emailing rescue sites to get the dogs out of kill shelters to safe ones, foster if we can, like doghealer is doing, the tenesseePyr rescue is paid for him and she is fostering for them. If people can help with transport ect, that would avoid red tape and all that other complicated stuff right?? Basically keep doing what we are doing the BPO rescue help???

Thank you for your email. H.O.P.E. Animal Foundation is an educational foundation that supports local shelters and rescue groups actively involved with spay and neuter programs as well as adoptions. In addition, we provide for an aggressive media campaign through TV, radio, and billboard advertisements in an effort to help educate our community about the life-saving benefits of spaying and neutering. We do not operate a physical shelter and therefore cannot house animals. We are in the middle of construction on a new low-cost, high-volume spay and neuter clinic; we are very excited about this facility and hope to have it open and operating by the end of the year.
Unfortunately, because we are not a shelter, we cannot take in Lil Rascal. Here in California's central valley, we fight tragically high euthanasia rates each and every day. Though great strides are being made to save more and more animal lives, the progress seems slow. The animal shelters and rescue groups here in the Valley all belong to a Coalition of animal groups that network together in an effort to save more lives. I am sure that members of the Coalition have seen Lil Rascal's listing on Petfinder and are weighing the possibility of pulling him into their care. We wish that EVERY animal could have their happy ending, but it just isn't possible in our area yet due to space limitations and, of course, financial limitations as well. But we will get there!
Is your group, Big Paws Only, limited to "big paw-ed" animals only? Do you have specific breed requirements for rescue? Will you travel to pick up animals to re-adopt? If you could send me more information, I would love to pass along your information as a resource for potential animal rescue to the other members of our Coalition. With all of the large breed dogs we see here in our area, we could definitely use another resource such as Big Paws. Thank you.

Zimas.... I agree, we should ask Michael and jaimie what they think, I am totally for the idea with a rescue. work with other rescues, but first and foremost pull dogs from kill shelters.
And sometimes it does happen that rescue groups dont see an animal that is on its last days. We have had more than once that we when very few hours are left, get to know about a cat or dog that needs to be pulled.
About the red tape, I think we should "sit down" and figure out how we want to do the rescue part. BUT if we could wrangle up some foster homes, transport network and even if red tape is a dread, go through it and become a 503(c) rescue. If donations are tax deductable people are more likely to believe in you and also more likely to donate money, which we would need to help the foster homes out with vetting, feeding and such, aslo try and involve the vets we go to ourselves see if they could give us a good price when a foster need vet. care. And well if we are a 503 we could have events to try and get people to donate money, and like I said, always easier to go to both individuals and companies if their donation is deductable. Well this is just me brainstorming now.

Yeah..... saddly enough, there are soooo soooo many big and giant dogs that cant find homes, a lot of them get shorter time at the shelters just because they take up lots of room and their chances are less. Many of them are pure bred too

so true, we should get lists togeather of all the breed rescues, that way it is easier to get them out of kill shelters into safe ones. That is how 2 of the pyrs got rescued.

I was just on the Merced site and they have 10 dogs that are on the list to be put to sleep and most of them are labs. This is so heart breaking!! :'(

I know Nina, when you look at the whole picture it is sooooo overwhelming, when I start doing that, I can sit down and cry for a long time and wonder what in the world I am thinking, working with rescue every single day and knowing that there is never ever enough.
I try to look at one dog at a time, well most days several dogs or cats. but try not to think about the whole horrible situation, I am not sure I could find strength to go on if I did that all the time.
But it makes me want to start a rescue even more :'(

Ok I just sent a bunch of emails trying to save the 4 Labs in danger of being put down. The emails I sent out are to Lab rescue places so hopefully, they will be saved and, hopefully so will Lil Rascal. Well I need to take a break, my fingers are sore from typing and so are my eyes from looking at this screen. If anyone needs anything or has questions about the rescues you can PM me or email me. Okay angel #3 is checking in lol....... when I got off here earlier today I got a couple of phonecalls, then I felt that my cold was going worse again, so I thought id not give it a chance, so well I did the nyquil thing and baaaboooooom Me has been napping almost all eve. I am still having a pretty bad fever, actually worse now than before the nyquil so I got all groggy for no good lol....
Anyway I thouhgt Id check in here and see how things are going. Well we dont seem to have any problems with the transport, but dang.... it sure is hard to wrangle up a foster home.
Ill see if I can find some more rescues to email before I got to bed, rather than napping in the couch.

"95% of the animals in our local area are put down daily to the tune of around 50 a day. That said, if you'll cover the cost of rescuing her (the rescue fee (around $20.00), altering [around $150.00 for a large dog], Frontline ($17.00) and gas for a volunteer to go there IF we can get one (around $30.00, shots (rabies & dhpp) ), we'll take her."
So..... I guess that is an option

I still haven't heard anything on Rascal or the Labs that I am trying to get pulled too. I will email again and asked what is happening. Has Jay contacted you??

OK everyone, I have some news. I was also trying to save 4 Labs from being put down in the Merced shelter I got some news from them.
First I'll put a face to the names ;D

Desi was adopted woohooo ;D, Jonny may have a place in Sacramento. Not sure on Mike, Mel is the one that is in real need, because of his coat color, I think people don't think he is a lab! His coat is beautiful it is brindle( not sure on sp) If I were there I would grab him in a second! I love that type of coat. And I am not sure on Lil Rascal, hopefully one of the other angels will have info on her. So at least I have some good news for you all :)

ANGEL #2 IS CHECKING IN.......lol with great news too might I add!!! Lil rasclette aka lil rascle has been ADOPTED OUT!!!! "dancing" YEAHHHH we did it!!! Thanks for your help BPO and Charlies angels!!!! Thats great news Nina Angel #1 lol But everyone lets see what we can do for these other little angels too.... the labs Nina give me some orders!!lol Im waiting!! lol

Thats great, I was on the site and Rascals pic was still there, so I was worried, 2 Labs picks are gone Mike and Jonny, I just emailed to see if they have been adopted out or in a rescue now Mel the bridle Lab is in danger, we need to help him!!!!

I just got off the phone with Sharron.....me l has a couple more days due to the adoption of some others!! she didnt have info on her right now but she will be calling me this afternoon wuth an Up dated URGENT list of the dogs that will be put down first!!! So we have more work cut out for us angels!!!! Get ready lol!!!!! So I post everything this afternoon!!

Ranger is kind of iffy with other dogs, so I am probably a better transport-er than a foster-er, but keep me in the loop. You never know!

Girls, you are amazing! I haven't been posting on here in awhile, due to some personal issues, and this posting reminded me why I love this board and love the people on here. We are all folks who care about animals and want to help in whatever way we can. You are truly angels!

Oh nooooooooooo BAD NEWS ..........lil rascles potential mommie took a picture of her to her vet and the vet told her that she is a pittbull!!!! She doesnt seem to want her anymore!!!! Sharron just called me on accident while she was trying to call her and let me know she will get back to me to let me know what she says!!!! mmmmmmmmm Im so disappointed ! I dont know why people are so against pittbulls? they are soooo sweet tooo!!!

Grumpy, you are in San Diego and that is about an eight hour drive from Merced. I am in Fresno and several members are in the LA area so if we need to, we can do a relay up the state. Just remember California is so long if we were on the East Coast we would drive through as many as five states to cover the distance. Just a thought, set up a relay.
I have never fostered but would like to, however, we will be going into our vacation period. Maybe after October when I will be home the rest of the year, I could. How does it work. Do they sometimes give you a dog and then forget about you or do they still try to place them? I would like to know and then would consider taking a dog and training him to be more adoptable. Just a thought, can someone give me a clue on how it works.

I just looked on the website and I don't see Lil Rascals pic or Mels pic anymore, so that could only mean that either they have been put down or adopted. I so hope that it means they have adopted.
