: Lily the amazing relactating foster mom!
: Shadowsmom July 11, 2008, 05:05:50 PM
My darling 9 year old Aussie, who we got 2 1/2 years ago, who was bred at some point in her life but never with us, looooooves baby kittens more than anything. When our cat had her first litter, Lily stayed by the box and STARED for hours....days. She only left them to eat or pee.

When the mama cat died suddenly (we live in the country, we think mountain lion  :'( ), we fed the babies formula, but it was Lily who knew to lick them to help them eliminate, thus saving their lives.

And now the two rescue kittens we've adopted had apparently been adopted by Lily. They nuzzled in to her soft fur to try to nurse. She let them. She licked them and nuzzled them back. Then we noticed the kittens started staying longer and longer. Yesterday I noticed each of the kittens, at different times, nursing for a LOOONG time on Lily. I tried to express a little milk from her teat and SURPRISE! she has relactated!

What an amazing girl! We are so proud of her! Maybe she could actually foster another kitty or puppy someday. Here are some pictures of Lily and Booger.

Ahhh what a cute story and pictures.
Is she spayed? I just wondered since I never knew a spayed female could produce milk. If not don't you worry about her getting a pyo at her age and being intact?

She is intact. She only has about one cycle a year or less now. She doesn't wander and has not chance of getting pg here. I have britches for her when we go out. I doubt she would be lactating if she was spayed. I worry less about her now. Lactation helps prevent certain conditions and if she keeps this up, she may not have another cycle because of the hormones she's now producing.
