: Some Things You CAN Do With Big Dogs...
: GrumpyBunny August 08, 2005, 02:37:35 PM
So, the post about things we CAN'T do with our big dogs got me thinking...  what are some of the most unusual or out-of-the-ordinary places you HAVE been able to take your big dogs?

I think the most unusual place that Ranger and Gwen have been is the Miniature Railroad in Balboa Park here in San Diego (see below)...   ;D  We take the dogs there to walk them around the park pretty often, and one day we were walking them when the train pulled into the station.  The Engineer began talking to us about the dogs and I said, half-jokingly, "They want to go on the train!".  Next thing I know we were cramming two people and two over-100 pound dogs onto the kiddy train!

I was so scared that Ranger was going to jump out, but he didn't and they had a blast!   We looked so ridiculous smooshed into the tiny little cars...  I wish we had gotten some pictures.

Where have your puppies been?

way cool!  You guys must be in the way back...caboose!

We haven't been any where strange.
We took Lady to Chow Hound once...when she was the size of a pea pod...and she didn't want to walk through the store so we put her in the cart and pushed her around the store.

I go into alot of people's yards that I normally wouldn't have without my big dogs....When I am walking my guys so many people who are in their yards want me to bring them over to see them...If I wasn't walking my dogs we would probably just exchange a wave or not even that.

We didn't get any pictures - that is just to give you an idea of what the train looks like...

But, funnily enough, we did sit in the caboose.  I figured that way if Ranger jumped out and I had to jump out after him at least the rest of the train wouldn't run us over!   ;D

(Although, you can see from the size of the train it probably wouldn't have been life-threatening - it would have more like "Ow, my foot!")

at least in that caboose he could blow the horn...or kick off the trouble makers.  :)

Oh my Paw!!!  dogs don't have feet.

Paw is my favorite word.

We've taken Bear to the Arcade after some schmoozing with the owner but most other places he been is a result of seeking out where he is allowed to go. Last weekend however Jaime and I went to a restaurant at our local Mall area and asked if we could eat on the patio with our dog. First the answer was no but then some higher-ups allowed it. Once we were seated however the manager came out and whispered to me that he had pictured a smaller dog and that this wasn't going to work. OK?? Well I promised he would be fine as Jaime and I both pushed on one end and pulled from the other to relocate him under the table and out of sight. Well he wasn't really out of sight and the REAL problem actually were the spectators gathering to meet him.. NOT his behavior. In the end I went back in to thank the manager and he proceeded to tell me how surprised he was that Bear was so quiet and well behaved and then thanked me!

Not surprisingly, the more well behaved big dogs have the bad rap while the obnoxious heel biting little dogs have full access.

Well I don't know if you Boston people know this (I'm about an hour from Boston) but you can take your dogs to Fanueil Hall, and on the Freedom Trail.  I'm planning on taking Sanity soon.  There's some pub that has a place to eat with the dogs too but I forget where.

Anky, where are you from? Did you know you can take dogs on the T too? I don't know if it is technically allowed, but I've met a bunch of dogs on the T.

I can't really think of any crazy places we have taken zoey right now. One thing that is funny though is that when zoey was a baby she used to ride in my lap in the convertable (she couldn't even fit in the back now though  :D )

At the beginning of the summer there was a huge sailing race that came into our harbour, and some of these boats were several million dollar yachts. Well the hubby and I both love to sail so we had to go down and oogle at these boats. We were amoung many spectators and the crew was weary of answering the same questions over and over so many of them sat on the far sides of the boats so they wouldn't be disturbed by all of the questions (sort of sounds like us with our big paws getting weary of answering all of the same questions!) Of course we had Abey and Hutch with us and everytime we came to a new boat the crew would come over to chat with us about the dogs! So we in turn got to ask all we wanted about  the boats. We even got invited onto two of the boats to have a look around! We had to pass, imagine lifting a near 200 lb dog up on to the deck of a boat!

I'm from Nashua NH.  We take the T everywhere.  Good luck finding parking in Boston.   :P  I think I read that's allowed too.  I read this all on MSN'S pet friendly city listing

I took Merlin to a hockey game....As it was over and we were on our way out, one of the rink guards stopped us and started yelling that we couldn't have the dog in there. I gave him an exasperated huff and said "I know, the nerve of some people!!! I was just escorting him out!" I headed for the exit while he was still sputtering. LOL It was great!

We had a small train experiance too........... ...

Some years ago my ex girlfriend, her little girl, Lucy and I went to the Pumpkin Patch near Canby OR. When we pulled in the kids directing traffic all made a big deal about how we should take Lucy inside, so I dropped everyone off and went to park the car. By the time I got to the line for the train tickets Antionette (the X) was fuming, Samantha (the kiddlett) was upset, and Lucy was looking around for me to hide behind. It seems the woman in front of us was terrified of dogs and pitched a fit, insisting her son (who I was assured by all bystanders wanted to pet Lucy) was scared of dogs, how dare we bring a dog in there, how dare we have a big dog in out public, BLAH BLAH BLAH, made a huge scene I'm sure you all know the drill......... ..... When we got to the ticket booth the woman working there apologized, sold us our train tickets, and we qued up for the train. Still right behind this woman that had BIG DOG ISSUES........ ........

Shortly after a fellow walks up and asks me "I understand someone has a problem with your dog?" I try to explain our situation, we're just here to have a nice family day out, and the folks outside told us to bring her in............ .......... The fellow cuts me off an says " I own this farm and I like dogs better than people! And Now we're gonna show them!" The train had just pulled up and he made a point to lead us right under this womans nose to the head of the line and sat Lucy in the front car right behind the engineer. You shouldda seen her face.

After pumpkins were chosen and friends were met up with we went to the picnic area for lunch. Soon the same fella shows up and announces "We give the broken sausages to the pups" and takes some off the grill and hands them to a very grateful Lucy. Then every once in a while he'd come back and break a few so he could give her some more.

All in all that was a red letter day for the big girl

Lucy's dad.. that sure is a refreshing story to hear! I certainly understand real phobias, allergies or any of the several other issues people can have, and I'll go out of my way to make them comfortable. But once they get rude -  The gloves are off - I usually win. :)

Dozer loves to ride. I take him to McDonalds through the drive thru. You stop at the first window to pay, well Dozer was in the back hanging over my shoulder by the window working up a good drooler ( he loves the dollar cheese burgers) The teeny booper in the pay window almost gagged. I had to bite my tongue to stop from laughing. At the next window where you actually get your order the lady just loved him.
When we go through the bank drive thru they give him Milkbones.

The donut places here give ours Donut hoels or whole donuts, depending on who's working the window.

www.dogfriendl y.com is a GREAT resource for places where dogs are allowed!  I've taken the Newfs to just about everywhere I go (except inside restaurants) and they are usually welcomed with treats and hugs.  At our local up-scale department store, all the cosmetic ladies were on the floor hugging the big fella and giving me ALL sorts of samples to make us stay longer.  I probably need them more than most!!  Cowboy is wonderful in hotels....the Cypress Inn in Carmel is owned by Doris Day and you almost HAVE to have a dog to stay there!!!  It is SO much fun!  Dogs sitting with their owners at breakfast, seeing them all on the dog-friendly beach, going in to dog friendly restaurants all over Carmel!  Chester still hasn't had a chance to go, but maybe next spring??!!!!

One thing you can do with big dogs that you can't do with little ones is hug them, wrestle them and love them like a person. You can't do that with a little dog!  ;D

Yeah, well you can't throw a big dog through a tire swing from 30 feet either...LOL! :D

We actually stumbled across an amusing outting for the boys this last weekend. I'm an entertainer at our local Renaissance Faire, and we camp onsite for the weekends, as it's a long day.

We took it into our heads that perhaps the boys would enjoy coming out with us the day before the Faire started, and sniff out the sights and sleep in the trailer with us. They LOVED it! The people were uber-friendly, and we couldn't seem to walk two feet without stopping for some puppy-lovins.  ;D

Apollo was raring to get into the horse arena...he seemed to think that Mom had finally provided toys big enough for him to play with. ::) The owners were laughing to see this enormous mutant moose dragging me around trying to get into the pens, but I preservered and eventually convinced him that No, those were not giant stuffies, and No, they did not want to be drooled on. ;)

All in all, a lovely experience for my boys, and I look forward to taking them again. It was a little rough sleep ing that night; all the new sounds and smells kept them up for most of the night, thereby ensuring that we got no rest either, but it was well worth it.

Let's see....Cabeza always goes to the local pet store with us. I bartend at a yacht club and my boyfriend brought him into the bar the other night. He was a big hit and SO well behaved! Everyone forgot he was even there. There were several places in Chapel Hill that I could bring the dogs. There was a bar called the Cave...they had treats in a jar on the bar! There was always little dogs sitting on the barstools, it was awesome! I could also bring them to the video store there, and several restaurants with outdoor patios.

My Lady used to LOVE to go thru the McDonald's drive thru and the people there usually had her bi-weekly treat of an unwrapped cheese burger ready for her, threw it at her and she caught it in mid-air.  HA!  Memories...you r story brought it back since she had been doing that for several months while she was sick.

My guys almost ALWAYS come with me to the McD's drive thru.  I used to take Keiko to the drive thru at the bank too, they loved her.  Our bank here doesn't have a drive thru.

Besides Petsmart and Petco, I've heard that some Home Depot's let you take your dogs.  I have yet to try it.  Also some Barnes and Nobles.  I've seen some dogs coming out of the local sporting goods store, too.  I guess I feel weird asking........ .I'm not much of a go getter, so I wait until I hear it's okay from someone else before trying it myself.

I would like to know of more places, as I'm trying to train Keiko for therapy work, and would like her to get used to going into strange buildings.  And learning that you can't get biscuits in every store, like she does at Petsmart.

Besides drive-thu's, the Snap-On tool guy in my old neighborhood used to keep treats in the tool truck. Then a couple of the UPS drivers started carrying biscuits. Lucy got the idea that all step-vans had dog treats as standard equiptment. We were doing an off leash lap 'round the 'hood one day, she was about 20 feet in front and there was a delivery truck with the door open and the driver sorting packages in the back. Lucy hopped up and was right behind the guy when he turned around, scared the beejeezus out of him. I explained very quickly, he had a sense of humor, but no treats........ ..

Such lucky dogs!

Back when we had a fullsized van, Blizzard could go anywhere with us and she did! She loved it. We even had room to place another Pyr in there, along with the six kids. Her favorit was a sunday afternoons. We'd all pile in after mass, go back home and pick her up, then head out across the river, drive the riveroad and end up in a small town. They had this great homemade icecream shop! I'd sit out on the porch with her while the kids and my husband went in to order..they'd always bring back two schoops of vanilla for her.

Saddly, we downgraded to a mini-van (stupid oil prices.) and poor Blizzard can only go on walks, trips to the vet...and sometimes to Petsmart if I only take two kids with me,max. Otherwise, there's just no room for her. The kids all get squished in the back seat.

It's actually  making her more depressed, poor baby.

The other day my youngest child asked if we could move to "Birdwell Island"...lol..home of Cliffard the Big Red Dog.

When Dad and I hiked up to Kennecott, we took Sherwen. Dad didn't want to hike all the way down, so we decided to take the bus back to McCarthy. I didn't know if they'd let dogs on, but they said that Sher would be allowed if we bought him a ticket (which was only $1 because he was under 10, lol).

I'll have to try the local Home Depot, and Barnes and Noble, don't know what their policy is, guess I'll find out. Don't want anyone coming off negative to Tulsa, she can get negative too. As long as I can save her she'll do alright.
God bless the Beasts and the Children.

I manage a movie theater and will sometimes bring the kids (two akitas) with me during the day to watch a movie by ourselves. They get to run around the auditorium when the mood strikes them, but mostly they just watch the movie with me.
