: Blood in Urine ** Update***
: lins_saving_grace July 19, 2008, 01:17:06 PM
Why would there be blood in a dog's urine??

Grace goes out and "marks her territory" so to speak.  When she relieves herself the first time, things are the right color.  when she goes again, there's blood in the urine.

What is that all about?  this just started today.

she's able to pee and is doing it well.  just that second tinkle is red. it doesn't seem to hurt her to do it. just now it was a little more diluted.  of course this didn't happen till after noon when the vet's office closed.
she doesn't drink much water today, but will drink milk.  I don't think she's been hurt and she has had some UTI's in the past.  i'll watch her tonight and call the vet first thing monday no matter what.  she's in good spirits and bouncy.
she is taking rymidal for the strain on her leg that may be the ACL or not and did get her shots Thursday including a new vacine for a bacteria found in stagnat water.

How would she get kidney stones?

i am coming up with creative ways to make her drink.  i put water in ice cream, gravy, milk and other things just to get water in her.  she's not real interested in regular water.

thanks for the info.  this was a shock to me today.

I haven't.  i have a little bowl pump for when we go for walks.  she thinks that's pretty neat.  Or she likes to drink from the toilet bowl.

still only drinking when enticed.  poor girl.  i can't wait till monday morning.
we just went for a little walk.  she peed a good bit here and there, and only once with a small amount of blood in it.

Penny Lane did the same when she had a UTI. So now if I see a drop of blood I give her a cranberry pill. Just pick it up at and store. I give her one for a few days then it is ok.

that works for dogs too?  I'll have to ask the vet about that.  I would think she needs antibotics at this point to take care of it...but if that's a good preventative that would be nice.  My vet tells me Rotts are prone to GI issues, ear issues, and bladder issues.

I didn't notice blood in urine until I saw a little blood stain on the sofa blanket our Chihuahua sleeps on. Blood in urine for humans is often very serious, but when I took him to vet it was just a UTI cleared up easily with antibiotic. She told me blood in urine in very common in dogs with UTI's and not nearly as serious as in humans. Other than the stain, he was perfectly normal as far as rest of his behavior.

Hopefully this is all that is going on with Grace.

that is comforting to know.  It's been a rough year for Little One.

I'm a cranberry pill believer, too.  I've used them for myself but also for the pups.  If I suspect a UTI, I give them cranberry pills just until I can get them to the vet as soon as they open.  The dr told me that something in the cranberries helps to keep bacteria from sticking to the interior lining of the bladder, so it can help to prevent UTI's, and can be a temporary comfort during a UTI until you can get antibiotics.  Cassie had a UTI a few months ago, so I added Wellness food to her diet b/c it has blueberries in it (similar to cranberries for prevention).  So far, she hasn't had another UTI yet (knock wood!).   ;)

Also, when I've had UTI's & kidney infections, the odd thing is that I just don't feel like drinking anything for some reason.  Of course, that's the worst thing because the fluids are vital.  :-\  Maybe that's just me though.  If Grace likes canned food for a treat, you might have luck making a soup out of it by adding more water or low sodium broth.  That usually works for my pups anyway.  I hope that Grace kicks this quickly, poor girl.   :(

she doesn't feel like drinking, you're right.  I've been making her drink by adding milk or this pork juice to water.  i've been having luck with that.  tomorrow i'll boil some boullion cubes in water, just to add taste.  we'll manage till the vet opens i think.

ok.  i will do that.  She had some already though.  not much.  but the good news is, there's no blood this morning.  i'll run out and get more broth soon.  in the meantime, she will drink with milk or something nummy.

She had her shots Thursday and there's a new vacine they are giving to prevent against a bateria in stagnat water.  this bacteria affects the liver and kidneys and i'm wodering if this is a happy side effect.

no matter what, the vet is getting a call in the morning.

no doubt.  i hate it when my baby has scarey issues. i saw that yesterday and FREEKED!   it happens 3 days before her shots, she was in the stagnat river water playing.  i had no idea there's a new thing dogs can get.

I haven't seen any blood today.  she still won't drink regular water.  that bothers me.  but if pampering is what she wants, then that's what she'll get.  what a diva.

Hope a call to the vet today will answer your concerns. As for drinking, she may have learned she doesn't have to drink plain old water now, mom will give me all kinds of yummy flavored stuff.

Have you tried letting her drink from a running faucet or hose? They seem to love fresh running water.

Isn't their timing great? Wait until a weekend when the vet is closed, make you worry all weekend long. And then hopefully by Monday morning they are fine.

i called the vet and took a pee sample to them.  there's not a bladder infection.  they don't know why she's not drinking.  they want me to measure her water and find out how much she drinks a day.  we'll report back to them in a few days.
the only OTHER place to get water is the toilet bowl and she doesn't drink out of the toilet ever.  and i put milk on her dog food so she is getting liquids...mayb e 1/2 a cup a day.
and she did get into the garbage can and tore off with a maxi pad.  that might explain the blood.

but she is spoiled and i give in.

Lin, why are you still giving her milk? Not a good idea. :-\
: Re: Blood in Urine
: lins_saving_grace July 21, 2008, 10:59:26 AM
i have to put something on her food to make her eat.  i'll stop using the milk.  but she has never drank out of the toilet.  i measured 3 cups into her water dish just now and we'll see how long it takes her to get a drink with no nummies in it.

she doesn't appear to be dehydrated.
: Re: Blood in Urine

typo.  the only other place to get water is the toilet and she doesn't like to drink out of that.

the dog nazi Dr. Drobitch said not to dress up her water with anything (and that's hard to resist).  "she'll drink when she's thirsty."  i'll try something new on the dry food to make it more appealing.  she's never eaten it dry without something on it.  i'll get something lowfat and sodium free.
she has a great appetite.  the eating isn't a problem.

They want me to wait it out for now until they can tell how long she will go without drinking.

I've tried ice cubes and she dunks for them, plays with them and spits them out.  there's not a whole lot of drinking involved with that.

But definiately i'll stop with the milk.

I told the lady at the vet today that not giving her a reason to drink water with whatever in it would make her dehydrated.  they are taking the tough love route.

She's always wanted something on her food.  this thing with her not drinking till there's something in the water just started Saturday.

How embarrassing.  She's still pooping maxi pad from Saturday.  At least it's coming out.  maybe her tummy just feels full and she doesn't feel the need to drink.

she took a little water from a glass and a soup bowl.  and played with some ice cubes.  still not drinking a lot.

Sorry Grace is having health issues again.  Poor girl, she has had a rough year.  Hope she is on the mend very quickly & they get to the bottom of the problem.

thank you.  me too.  i'm real worried.  but, she's had 5 cups of water since dinner.  i can tell she wants to get adrink, but she sniffs her bowl and walks away.  My mom thinks she just doesn't like the taste of water lately.  i'm wondering if it's the rymidal she's on for another few days.  so i added a touch of pork juice to her water and a little hot dog juice and she lapped it up like nobody's business.  i know that's breaking the rule, but it's so hot and i can't let her just melt without water.
: Re: Blood in Urine ** Update*** Can't figure this one out.
: VdogLover July 21, 2008, 10:10:51 PM
5 cups since dinner I would say is plenty. Some of mine don't even drink that in a whole day.

I found on line that an adult dog needs 2ml of water / lb of body weight a day to survive. But that a dog will normally drink more then the needed survival amount.

So a 100lb dog only needs to drink 6.76 oz of water per day to survive. Since a standard US cup measurement is 8oz she drank 40oz since dinner....well over the needed amount.

: GoldenPyrs July 22, 2008, 02:50:07 AM
Lin, I agree that 40 oz is really a lot for Grace.  When Halley was ill the vet told me that she needed to drink (or be given) 500 ml (or about 16 oz.) of fluids per day to survive and she was around 80#.  So I would be careful about encouraging Grace to drink so much as I don't know if consuming too much liquid very quickly is as dangerous to dogs as it is to humans.  I'm sure that she'll be fine tonight though (but she may be wizzing like a racehorse all night  ;) ;D).  If she doesn't have blood in her urine any longer and I read that the vet didn't find a UTI, then unless I didn't read carefully enough (and that is certainly possible, I'm pretty tired), I wouldn't worry much about her fluid intake tomorrow.  She probably won't be very thirsty until later in the day or evening since she's so hydrated right now.  Just a thought...   ;)

She drank...all by herslef.  nothing to sweeten the pot...no coaking.  :)

WELL, Little One is doign good.  she's drinking well and eating and playing.  She's back to drinking about 16 oz a day.  that 5 cups was from not having taken a drink in 24 hours i think.
The blood is gone too...I stopped giving her the rymidal last night since the blood only happened right around the times i was giving her her pill.  So, no blood, but her leg hurts a little.  so, i'm pretty sure the ACL is going to go pretty soon.  She's still walking well and getting around.  I'm not even going to freat about it since i expect this to happen, can't stop it from happening, and will be so relieved when it's done and over with.  Grace will be happy when it's over too.

thanks everyone for your help and ideas.  I about lost it the other day after i assumed the worst with what could be wrong with her.  i'll keep my eye on her just in case there's something more to this blood in the urine thing though.

:)  it's ok.  Everyone was quick to add their input Saturday when i was really upset about it.  So i was pretty thankful since my vet had already closed.

The ACL is such a minor thing to me anymore.  The good news is that this is our last leg.  After Grace's right and both of Lady's ACL's, ACL replacement is an old hat to me.  She'll be fine once it happens.
