: Neo in Toronto up for Adoption
: Derek August 09, 2005, 12:04:01 PM
Good Day folks,
I joined BigPaws Only this weekend past in an
effort to locate a loving family in Toronto and surrounding
areas that is in search of a Neo Mastiff.
I am putting mine up for immediate adoption.
Better details are described in the Mastiff Neo Discussion board.

She is so beautiful, I wish I was closer to you so that I could foster for you until you found her a forever home. Unfortunatley, I'm in Halifax. How immediate is her situation?

Its unfortunate but I would like someone to take her
as soon as possible.

So, the only reason that she needs a new home is that your mom doesn't like the drool? Oh my! How sad. I read another member's suggestion to have her spayed first, that is a really good idea. I am 8 hours from Toronto, I could probably foster her for a few weeks, but can't keep her forever because I'm moving soon. However, I'd hate for some unscrupulous breeder to get her and make her into a puppy machine. So, if I can be of any help with a foster situation, let me know. Anyone out there able to help with this? Come on, guys! We can't let some crazy person turn this baby into a puppy factory! I'll drive up and get her, and can keep her for....oh, three weeks? Maybe a bit more? Let's make this work, girls! (and guys!)

Oh, and one other thing...I can have her spayed. A local vet will do it for $25 bucks. So, I'll cough up for that, too.

Trinity of Hope Dog Rescue specializes in giant breed dogs, I know that you said that you don't want to put here in a place like this but if at last resort it could be an option. They are in Manotick Ontario. If we could find a few more people to help in the leg of driving I would definatley help in the foster, it would take someone to get her through Quebec, I could manage the New Brunswick into Halifax.

I will also email a friend of mine is very active in Maritime rescue and see if she has any contacts in Ontario. It's something about her beautiful face that breaks my heart. How is she with other dogs? Does she get along better with males or females. You said that she is good with children? Does she have any special needs concerning any area?

I have no problems placing her with a rescue family.
I can not put her into facility or a family that is going to keep her in a cage all day.  She could not handle that.  We have placed her in kennels before when we had to go away for a few days and she gets depressed and does not eat properly.  She is used to being loose all the time.
The only special need to be considered is companionship - she constantly wants to
be at your feet and rubbed and touched.
Yes, the drooling infuriates my mom.  She tends to pace around a lot even at all hours of the night and this drives my parents up the wall.  They are unreasonable and figures she should "lay down" all darn day..Yeah, I am bitter...lol
The only reason she is not spayed is cause when we first got her we were going to breed her once for puppies for friends but then they backed out when they saw how big she was getting, so we never bred her.
The only problem I can see with her will be the seperation depression if someone takes her.  She is sooo attached to my brother and I that it will be devistating to her and will take some time to bounce back with the new family.  I left her with a potential family in June for a week.  She would not leave their front door for the first couple days but eventually slowly started to warm up to them.  They absolutely loved her but unfortunately chose not to adopt her.

Wish there was some way you could keep her...very sorry

I really wish that I could take her, I even spoke to my fiance about it and he said no, as we have 2 dogs already and our house is too small for 3 dogs.  :(
But it wouldn't be fair to her, especially since we both work full time and she wouldn't have human conpanionship all day. I really wish I could take her though, she is soo beautiful, and I don't mind the drool, my Pyr is a droll machine!  ;D

Hey Saint Girl-
Well...like I said. I can get her from Toronto. The drive is 8 hours each way, but...oh, wait a minute. Is there any kind of restrictions on taking a dog from Canada into the U.S.? Anyone know anything about this?

Hmm.....I'll have to look.
: Re: Neo in Toronto up for Adoption

Do you think that it would be US Customs? They would be the ones, right?

: Nicole August 09, 2005, 02:20:30 PM
Ok, sweet! Where'd you find that, Jenn? I looked all over their website!
: Re: Neo in Toronto up for Adoption
: Nicole August 09, 2005, 02:21:45 PM
Anyway, Saint girl...
I could do some driving, I could go get her...I'm not sure where Halifax is in relation to Toronto. Or, like I said, I could keep her for a few weeks until something else worked out.
: Re: Neo in Toronto up for Adoption
: Nicole August 09, 2005, 02:24:33 PM
Hmm.....Yahoo maps says its 17 hours from Toronto to Halifax! Ack! That's a loooooong drive!
: Re: Neo in Toronto up for Adoption
: Saintgirl August 09, 2005, 02:26:53 PM
I'm late getting back to this. Jenn's right, their is no quarentine, however they do require that you have a vet record with you. This shows the rabies, and all of the other vaccines that the dogs have gotten. If the dog is sickly looking they will not allow it through the boarders, and a vet check must be done to show that the dog does not pose a threat any other animals or people. I'm all for helping this poor little girl. However I am already in Canada, I wouldn't be of much use in helping her get down into the US. But whatever I can do...just let me know.
: Re: Neo in Toronto up for Adoption
: Nicole August 09, 2005, 02:32:22 PM
Yeah...and once I got her here, I'd have to find something else for her in a few weeks. I'm sure that my boyfriend wouldn't be too pleased if I left him with the Neo when I went back to school in a few weeks! Unless I look for a place that allows dogs....hmmm.. ..
: Re: Neo in Toronto up for Adoption
: Saintgirl August 09, 2005, 02:38:53 PM
Toronto to Halifax is 17 hours :o! I know this all too well. That is why I said that the only bit of the drive I could do would be to New Brunswick, the half way point. I knew it would be a long shot, but I had to offer. It kills me when the giants are shuffled around because of no fault of their own. Size, drool...what all of the giants turn into when they are adults. I have emailed Trinity of Hope Dog Rescue in Ontario to see if they know of any loving homes looking for a Neo. Hopefully they will have an idea.

Well, let me know if there is anything that I can do...I mean, if you can come up with some type of foster in a few weeks, I can keep her until then. I don't really know of any rescues around here...maybe a few...I'll check into it.
: Re: Neo in Toronto up for Adoption

I have also emailed the Canadian neapolitan mastiff club. They are familiar with all of the neo rescues that are nation wide. Hopefully they will be able to help as well. Derek, you must email them with all of her information, hopefully one way or another a great home can be found.

Mind if a crosspost? I go on another pet forum and they do a lot of rescue to, maybe someone on there could help?

The more hands involved in trying to save her is all the better!!! I don't think Derek would mind.
: Re: Neo in Toronto up for Adoption

So, as I was driving home this evening, I remembered that my mom has friends with Neos. They may be interested or know others who are. Or rescues, etc. I will call my mom tomorrow and check into it. What is her name, Derek?

Nicole, that would be awesome! I'll keep my fingers crossed!

To quote two line in my email Leah, "I can not thank you enough for what you are doing.  It breaks my heart to part with her and it will break hers too."
I thank everyone that is assisting me in the matter it warms my heart in
such a dis-heartening situation.

Hi Derek,
I just called my mom....got her voicemail. So, as soon as she calls me with more info (her friend's phone number) I'll put in a call and let you know. As another option...I said that I'm moving soon (going back to school) and can't have pets. Well, yesterday, I found a wonderful place. Its on a horse farm with tons of land. And the lady loves animals. So, it may be an option.

So, what is the beautiful girl's name? Do you know how she is with cats?

I bring my dog Lucy, to the states all of the time. All you need to show the customs is a proof of Rabies shot. You would get that from the vet. You do not need to tell the customs that you are fostering the dog, you just need to show that she has her shot, and that it is valid.

We're still working on this...I'm going to speak with my landlady and see what she thinks. If she OK's it, I'm going to Toronto to pick Shamma up. I think. Derek (Shamma's Daddy) is working on getting her rabies shot. That's the first step.

Wow - what a crazy weekend it has
been here for me.
Sorry I have not been able to get on here.
To update you on Shamma and I:
I have been in touch with a family that
lost their Neo two months ago to old age.
Their young girl is heart broken and is very excited to have heard
of my dilemma.  They were referred to me by a very reputable
breeder here in ontario - which makes me feel comfortable.
Not to say that I was/am not listening to all you fine people
and your offers.
I will of course keep you updated.
