: Has anyone tried DNA testing their dog?

Just curious.
If you have were you surprised or were the breeds in line with your opinion?

I've never tried it.  I have thought about it but I love a good mystery so I just keep Shiner's ancestry a mystery to me.  It makes for a fun guessing game.  Not to mention that the last time I checked on all the lists for the DNA testing they don't have Malinois on them.  That would make it hard to identify Shiner's Malinois half.  I would like to know how well it works though.

Looking at Strider in that profile pic I see possibly some greyhound in him.

Patty; Thank you so much, I think he is a very handsome boy too. He is also a challange--OCD, hyper and just plain old wierd. It's hard to get a pic of him actually being normal.

Now Stella...how can you say that about Strider? He is PERFECTLY normal...hahah ahaha

Totally off topic but I just noticed your new avatar, Patty - love it!

I agree there's really no other use to DNA testing of mutts other than plain old curiosity! But if results aren't even accurate, hmmm what's the point!
Honestly though, if someone wants to spend their money on that , I don't think any less of them. If it were an accurate test I'd probably do it, just to solve the mystery of my mixed doggies! I would love to find out if my guesses were correct! To me, that's sounds really fun. I mean if money were no object.
Mokey was supposed to be part Irish Wolfhound too... ha! :D

Interesting thread..Falkor was DNA tested before I got him because two males were able to get in with his mother and they needed to find out which one was Dad..as it turned out it was not the one they had planned to beed with but since all were registered Collies it wasn't a problem at least not for the people recieving the pups..

I also had him tested for MDR1 which is something Collies as well as some other herding dogs are prone to..he was found to have the mutation..so I know what not to have him take in the way of meds..

As far as testing mix's I have to agree that even in pure bred's  there will be a mix..

Have no idea of how accurate they are..and it really doesn't matter to most of us that have a mix..Emma is a mix and I have no doubts that she is what they said she is..simply because I can see both..Rotti/Peke...

She could have a half dozen others and it wouldn't matter to me..
But then I am not the kind that needs to have an answer to everything..I usually accept what the great wide universe has placed in my path and do the best with what I have..

Happy New Year Everyone
