: New family members!
: Leah... January 08, 2009, 03:52:33 PM
Yup yup, it's happened again. Expanding beyond the world of dogs and cats... I'm a new mommy to three RATS! Hairless ones, at that.  ;D

Ruby is a ruby eyed white hairless rat, 4 or 5 months old.

May is a black hooded dumbo hairless rat, 3 months old.

Charlotte is a tan-ish gray furry rat, and only about 3 weeks old.

The dogs ADORE them, as do I. Has anyone else here had rats?

Good grief! What do you do in your spare time? hehe

Spare time?! Who needs that?

Haha The reality is, I'm homeschooled so I have plenty of time at home to spend with the animals.

Aww, pretty cute  :)

I'm sure you'll think I'm a huge dork, but last week at the shop I ran away shrieking like a little girl from a huge rat we found. My coworkers now know I'm not 100% ferocious :o  :(

OMG- I love the hairless rat!  I had a beige and white rat when I was in high school.  Her name was Snuggles.  I just loved her.  She was way better than my old hamsters and guinea pigs.  She really lived up to her name!  Most people don't realize what good pets rats make.  They're supper smart and love affection.  Congrat to you on your new little additions!  ;D

CongRATS to your new additions.  ;)

yup, I have rats, 2 of them.  Rex mix brothers Tater and Sunny, only one of them got the kinky rex hair though.  Right now we're keeping an eye on Tater though b/c he has a huge tumor on his left rear leg.  They just turned 2.  :D

My next rats though will be a hairless and a blue.  And I hope one of them is a dumbo.

here's a couple of pix of my two. (sorry for the crotch shot, Tater likes keeping close when outside  :-[  :P )

noooo way! i've always wanted hairless rats. we've had mice, but not rats, but i have handled and cared for some in pet stores i worked at. however having cats who are mouse hunters, is very hard to get something like that.  a HL Rat or skinny pig is definately on my 'wanting to own' list. i prefer things bald...  ;)

Ugh , we have THREE ...... Late last summer my kids' turtle ate their frog , so we headed to the pet store for a new frog , and came home with three rats  ??? One is a black and white named after that Disney rat movie ... how do you spell it ? Ratatooie ? Then there's an albino my daughter named Cinderella , and then my other son picked out a hairless and named her Hunty ..... have no idea how he came up with that name . They are very tame but our's are still growing and keep wondering when they'll stop !
Plus , if one of my birds lands on their cage they try to knaw their feet off ! I had to move them to a seperate room .
They really freak me out .I have extra wiring all over their cage to make sure they don't get loose . haha I'm pathetic !  ;D

PS > When we were first married a house we rented became infested with rats .... so now I have issues !  :P

I like the hairless. :D

My son wanted 2 Rats for christmas. I couldn't find ANY breeders locally. Coming from a breeder I find they are alot friendlier and since they were for a 12 year old I wanted to make sure they were used to being handled. Otherwise if he was ever bitten they would become mine. LOL

I have enough of my own.. lol. Hmm let's see.. My cockatiel, my fish, 4 cats, a ferret and of course Bubba and Lola.

That's....cool...?   ??? hahaha, I had 2 pet rats a few years back, they're really smart! A cream and white hooded, and a black and white hooded- "Disney" and "Arnie" I think they were both girls though. I trained them to stay in my room, and they'd come when I'd call their names.. Mom was NOT happy about that...lol  :-*

Can't wait to see pics!

I had a very large red tailed boa (Ramboa), he was 7 ft long so needless to say we had rats but never got to know them if you know what I mean.

LOL........... yeah I belong to a reptile forum and most of them have rats but not as pets.  ::)

as for the harnesses, they sell them at most pet stores.  I got mine at Petsmart.  But they probably wouldn't fit a female.  Mine are oversized, overstuffed males (think large softballs) and I still had to cut off the extra material on the fasteners.

But they do love going outside, even if it does mess with their allergies a bit (gives them bloody noses if out too long).  I can't really let them out in the house b/c of the dogs and that they get into too much stuff.  I  have the giant plastic balls for them which they go in when I clean the cage but they are lazy and even if they are in the balls for hours they don't move more than an inch.......... ....lol.  ::)  They also have a wheel in their cage but prefer to sleep in it rather than use it.  :P  But I guess the males are more lazy than females.

I can tell you that my next ones if I get hairless it will be females....... ...lol.  I don't need to see all their male parts hanging around.  ::) ::)

But they have it made.  I bought them a huge ferret cage about 6 mo after I got them to replace the 20L tank I had them in.  At least they get some exercise going up and down the multifloors.  :D

and b/c I never get to post pix of my rats (b/c most people think they're icky......lol) I'll post a few more:

OH. MY. GOSH. Your rats are adorable!!! Charlotte looks a lot like your tan one, but she may be more grayish. Having three lean, active females I can definitely tell you my next will be males. They just look so squishable!  :-* The differences in personalities between the genders is so drastic, too! I've seen those ferret harnesses, but I know my little petite girls won't fit. I could probably put all three in one.  :P I took a bunch of pictures of them eating yogurt this morning, and I will TOTALLY post them as soon as I upload.
