: Pyrenees/Wolf mix?
: truckerdave February 11, 2009, 04:10:22 PM
Can anyone point me towards any pictures of Pyr/Wolf hybrids or any information on how they behave? I can't find any pics of similar animals to the one in the picture. His name is Romeo and he's about 14 months old. Have no idea how much he weighs, probably well over a 100. He's about the biggest dog i've seen around here anyway. He simply got too big to hold him and step on the scales. He was supposed to be a free Pyr but we found out later he was part Artic Wolf. The other pups in the litter died from neglect, they had gotten tangled up in a roll of barbed wire(i think) and got infected. I guess we were the only ones who thought to carry thier pup to the vet. :( He's useless as a herd animal, tries to eat them instead. Makes a deep bass howling noise that gets higher pitched to Wolf howl. Sounds like something from a werewolf movie. Doesn't wander like a Great Pyrenees, stays close to the house and people, i suspect because wolves are pack animals. Has strange white eyelashes and webbed feet but has the double dewclaws. Does not appear to shed so far. Other than that he is just a big happy Pyr. He can be quite vicious towards other animals sometimes but so can any regular dog. Any info is appreciated.

I sure would have liked to have seen the other pups grow up. Sometimes mixed dogs inherit more from one parent than the other and it looks like he got more of the pyrenees genes. He could pass for a Pyr at first glance but when you look closer you can tell he's not quite the right shape, longer and leaner and his hair is shorter. That's what got us to checking into the dog's pedigree when he started to look not quite right. We have had 2 other pyrenees that died accidental deaths(ate a cottonmouth/killed by something in woods) and i didn't notice the eyelashes in either, this ones eyes have more of a slitted look. I'd like to know what this type of mix typically looks like. Be interesting to know whether they regularly inherit more pyr than wolf. Then again i didn't see the parents so the "wolf" parent could have been a mix also, which makes romeo a giant mutt. I'll have to take some more pictures.

They have tests you can get done to figure out the actual breeding. Alot of vets and shelters offer them no days. They swab the dogs mouth and then test the dna to see what breeds they are. You could try doing that. Then at least you'd know for sure. Both of my dogs are mixed but I saw their parents so I knew what they were mixed with.

He does actually look all Pyr and actually pretty nice at least from that pic.  The shorter coat is known as the 'working' coat- several of my Pyrs have it- wonderfully easy to care for.

I do appreciate the info. He may just have inherited a few wolf traits and mostly pyr appearance. I suppose from the lack of information no one is trying to breed Wolf and Pyr together. Seems kind of pointless as far as selling them, and this dog was an accident from what we were told. He does act differently from the other 2 Pyrs we have had. Has one blue eye and one brown eye, looks kind of funny.

Would love to see some up close pictures of his face, whatever his mix is he sound devilishly handsome!  :D

I'm not sure about a Pyr/Wolf mix myself, as I have no experience at all with wolf mixes in general, however there is at least one member here who has experience with them.  I'm sure someone will have some advice for you regardless.

But please do give us some more pictures...So that we may help you, and not for our own personal viewing pleasure at all... ;) :D

I do think he's mixed with something, his head looks a bit off from a pyr.

But I will tell you he is not a wolf/pyr mix.  wolves never have odd eyes.  They do not have blue eyes.  That is a man made trait.

Which means either he has a very small percentage of wolf in him, or someone is passing off a husky or mal as a wolf (which happens quite often).

B/c of the eyes, I'm guessing he's got some husky in there.  Blue eyes in malamutes are pretty rare and considered a fault.  And I can see some husky traits in the head shape.

Here's a couple more pics of the dog. I never saw the parents so he could be anything. Just going by what i was told. You are right, he could be part malamute or husky, most people have never seen a real wolf. They are HUGE! So is this dog, he goes through a 40 lb sack of food in a little over a week. Whatever kind of beastie he is, he is a pretty good dog. I just wish he wouldn't do that wolf howl every now and then at night. It makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up.
