After all of the stress and drama this week, Her Furry Majesty blew through the test like it was no big deal!

I'm so proud of my big fluffy white girl!!

The doggy daddy had the right idea - we stopped training her 3 days ago and then took her out to the dog park for an hour this morning.  She was sooooo much more relaxed and that made all the difference in the world.  That and my now lucky Pack Leader sweatshirt!

Congratulation s!! All the hard work paid off. You give me hope that we can obtain similar results if we stick with the training. Great job both of you!

Congratulations!! All the hard work paid off. You give me hope that we can obtain similar results if we stick with the training. Great job both of you!

I have to say that we wouldn't have made it without all of the support and encouragement from our fellow BPO'ers!!  Ursa is the first dog that I've taken this far in training and there were times when I had no idea what to do next!   :)  My sincere thanks to everyone here for keeping Ursa and I both moving forward for the last 6 months!

tralfazmom - you can share my new motto:  Anyone can train a Golden Retriever but I trained a Great Pyrenees!!!  ;D

Ruthanna, thanks that's a great motto.(And you can call me Rhonda) Most of the time we are still on track. Gus hasn't hit the terrible pup stage yet and we are trying our best to make it as smooth as possible. Right now we are doing at least two training sessions a day and using treats consistently. I am going to gradually move away from food treats, but my 10 year old son is also learning as we go. He is taking the reins so to speak at puppy classes. Both my young boys are learning together. It is so rewarding watching them grow together, and the bond between them is amazing. I don't think I could stay as focused if it weren't for the wonderful people and stories here at BPO. Every time my energy or enthusiasm wanes, I come here to read and I realize how very lucky I am to share my life with such an remarkable dog. It can be a TON of work and commitment, but knowing there are so many other caring and dedicated folks sharing their lives with these big guys, I don't feel alone during the tough times. Thank you!

Rhonda - that's great that your son is taking an active role in class!  I bet he's loving it.  Take my hard earned advice - don't wait until the last minute to wean off the treats.  We waited a little long and it made Advanced class more difficult than it needed to be.

I appreciate the advice, and I will definitely take it to heart. Gus does well for me without treats, I think I am  calmer and more in control. My son is still working it out with treats, he and Gus do a fabulous job together but I think my human son is not entirely comfortable yet with being the Alpha. Our ultimate goal is to do some therapy work with Gus, I am not sure if we will focus on nursing homes or children with special needs. We are not very far from Victory Junction Camps in N. Carolina, and we have friends in the NASCAR community who would love to see more volunteers. Very important work for both human and canine youngsters. Too many of today's younger members don't know how to give back. A valuable lesson for both of them. I will keep you posted on how we are doing, and will not be shy about asking for advice and suggestions when we hit the inevitable roadblocks.
