Look out for some super cool updates to the BPO website over the next few weeks!
Paw Prints, BPO Addict Client (still a secret), and a few other updates are planned. The biggest of them however will be the launch of a new online store - a store where we can all purchase any of our typical large doggy products, but with a very cool twist - we will be able to specify, at the checkout, what animal charity gets 10% of the proceeds! This is where we need everyone’s help.
Lets all post a few animal charities and or trusts that you think best has our gentle giants' welfare at heart. Because we are still small, we’ll first need to drill it down to 5 or so charities through a poll. Once we have all decided on the organizations that deserve our attention, we will go ahead and add them to the shopping cart functionality. Hopefully together, we can make a small difference in the world!
What is your favorite Animal Charity?

My vote goes to Pup Daddy's SPYN as one of the charities
-
Ditto that vote.

Pup Daddy for sure!

Okay I spelled it wrong(SPIN) but it stands for saving Pyrs in need. http://www.geocities.com/savingpyrsinneed/Â Â
If you can't point to this address and click then copy and paste the web address in your address bar or look for one of Pup Daddy's post and he has a link at the bottom of all his posts. He had a thread on Pyrenees Pictures yesterday about how many dogs they have rescued lately and I think he has 3 rescue pups he is fostering right now.

Wow! Thank you all for your support! If you have questions about me, see http://www.bigpawsonly.com/index.php/topic,2384.0.html, or visit our website
(see the links in my signature)
Or better yet, adopt one of our dogs!
-
Our vote goes to SPIN too!!! ;D
-
My vote goes to Bear Inc c/o Jabear.....heh ehehe. Just kidding, I would say Newf Rescue or something like that. ;)
-
I'm a fan of Second Chance League:
http://members.petfinder.org/~AK17/index.php
They rescue sled dogs in Fairbanks. I'm going to look into adopting a dog from them around September probably.
-
We also vote for a Newf rescue organization.. .any suggestions? SPIN also sounds like a good idea! :)
What a great opportunity to help out! Thanks!!! :)
-
I vote for Bear, Inc. LOL!! Nice try there Jaba!
I'm not sure if there is one, but is there a giant breed general rescue? I know most folks around here have Saints, Newfs, Danes, and Pyrs, but maybe there is one that we can give to that will help out not only those precious creatures, but Swissys, Mastiffs, Berners, Dobes and the like as well!! Marit - Do you know of one?
Oh - and I think giving to PupDaddy's rescue is a GREAT idea! As long as we get regular updates PupDaddy!!! ;D
-
What an awesome idea! I would like to vote for Leonberger rescue.
www.leonberger-rescue.org
-
I vote for SPIN, too. Also...the one that Greek's with...Circle Tails.
-
Actually, just to add to that....I kind of like the idea of ANY dog rescue that works with inmates. We've got a program like that here, too. Its Prison Tails.
Also...there is one in Chicago that devotes ALOT of resources into rescuing, rehoming and rehabilitating Pit Bulls, along with educating the public and dispelling myths. I'll post the link in a second. I've gotta find it...
-
I love "Special Friends" in Utah. They take all animals: dogs, cats, horses, mules, etc. and have special compounds for each species on 3000 acres. I've had friends volunteer there and they've come back raving about what an amazing job they do!
-
I vote for Canine Health Foundation: They fund research grants for all sorts of canine health ailments.
More info here: http://www.akcchf.org/research/index.cfm?nav_area=research
-
Ok, here it is. The Furry Friends Foundation.

AGH! That is NOT what I am putting in there! I don't understand. What I see on the screen after I post is different than WHEN I post it.....AGH.

Try that. Dang.
-
WHAT THE? I just typed one thing, and a different thing showed up! WHAT IS GOING ON?!?!?!!?
-
www.gracieland.org, a charity for Deaf Danes.Â
you stole mine.... so they get my vote too.
-
What about CCI? http://www.caninecompanions.org/contributions.html :)
-
i also think this concept has the potential of starting breed wars... If folks could give more info about organizations that would be super. There are a ton of breed specific rescues out there, and unfortunately we can't help them all. I think we should focus on rescues that deal with really special needs dogs, or across large and giant breeds in general.
-
I think that's why I suggested Canine Health Foundation, because it isn't specific. It is associated with the akc somehow, but I don't know how. It looks like some of the breed specific orginazation give to this also.. said in the research section that the bernese mountain dog fanciers contributed $40,000 for cancer research, and the grant total is $200,000
Not trying to push them, have no personal experience, not related, blah blah, just heard about it and it sounds like a good thing.

Im with Ang
But then again I like the idea of helping a foundation that isnt just one breed of dog
-
Ok.. so no Breed Specific charities? That sounds fair enough! Would we all agree on that?
-
Jaime, I completely agree....non-breed specific. As much as I adore Newfs, there are so many Newf people out there ready to take care of our own. What about all the other mixed breeds....smal l and large. Also breeds that are not as well represented need to be taken care of! It's not their fault that they are here...it's irresponsible people that cause them to be here...and we owe 'em!
-

Most certainly!!!...I would even go as far as no species specific! :)
-
Yep! I'd do that too!
Look at www.bestfriend s.org
They really are all heart!!

nite mil

I think Best Friends is a great one. And I want to reiterate my love for any groups that work with inmates. I think that the idea of teaching prisoners empathy by having them train dogs is WONDERFUL. Most of the dogs are mixes, too. And, then the dogs have a better chance of getting adopted because when they're done with the program, they are CGC's.
And, they say that it greatly reduces the recidvism rate. I can see why! Once you love a dog, its hard to go back!
-
Here is a great program.
Project POOCH is a non- profit organization that has been pairing young men incarcerated at the MacLaren Correctional Facility in Woodburn, Oregon with rescued dogs from animal shelters for over a decade. The youths train the dogs, groom them, and find new adoptive homes for them.

Good one, DakotaMom! I just love those groups.
Here's the one that is in my area. In the Westville, Indiana Correctional Center.

Ditto this suggestion ... or how about a Guide Dog for the Blind organization or puppy-raiser group?
-
I love the blind guide dog idea and the inmate one too.
-
I'm all for Guide Dogs or CCI... the ones that work with inmates sounds good too

I like that idea

I think if you are donating money, you should be able to direct it to the dog charity of your choice, after all it is YOUR money. But that might be a pain to have to specify every single donation. My personal choice, because I helped them get started, is the Newfoundland Health and Rescue Society: http://www.ncnc.org/Rescue/rescue.htm
So there's my 2 cents......
-
I still really like www.gracieland .org and their deaf dane rescue. I don't necessarily think that we should shy away from all breed specific organizations, i just think that if we are goign breed specific it should be selective in how we do it. Gracielands Deaf Dane rescue is a great example, working with a particular issue that is unfortunatley quite prominent in the Dane world.
I also think it would be good to rotate the charities every month or so. Like have 3 charities to pick from each month, and then switch so all our worderful organizations can get in on the action.
-
Hey, that's a good idea. I like the rotation thing. Or we could do a charity of the month, and switch every month.
-
I think that switching chairities every month is a good idea too. That way no ones charity is left out. There are so many good ones.
-
Excellent idea with the rotation!!!
-
I like the switching charities.... lets DO IT!!!!!!!!
i think I may have had 1 too may cups of joe this am!!!! But so what
DO IT!!!!!!!!
-
it is always nice when an idea goes over so well!
-
Hey Timmie, any word on the St. Newfards?
-
I think switching each month would be a good idea. Back to my original vote for SPIN - I am a Pyr person but that really isn't why I suggested it. I thought it would be cool to help out one our own BPO people, kind of like keeping it "in the Family"!!
-
I VOTE FOR SPIN... I know I am a little late, but just wanted to throw that in.
-
Ok.. so no Breed Specific charities? That sounds fair enough! Would we all agree on that?
Actually, I don't agree on that.Â
There are so many in need. And each and every one of us feels strongly about a specific organization.
Maybe a list can be made of all the charities on this thread then each month the donation goes to the next on the list. Or perhaps an amount can be agreed upon. When that is met it goes to a charity. Then start working on the next goal, when it is met it goes to the next charity on the list. This way each charity gets the same dollar amount.
Tina
I like this idea. My personal bias is for SPIN. I have 3 wonderful dogs that have been rescued by them - Casper, Bella, & Lucy.
Even though the Humane Society and the ASPCA are big organizations, I think they should be on our list of charities, too.
Peace,
LaurieW
