: California get together
: jabear April 20, 2005, 06:00:05 PM
Calling all California members....I would love to find out who lives in the state so that we could try and get a BBQ or something going this summer so that we can meet and let our dogs play together. I know that finding cool people with large breed dogs is sometimes hard to do (for me anyways). SO, if you live here and would be interested, let me and Bear know!

: mastiffmommy April 20, 2005, 09:59:00 PM
Ohh getting jealous now, CA is a tad bit too far for me, I am in NC. But I agree, it is real hard to meet people that dont think you are a total nut. I used to have Danes and now different breeds, but I think I have heard it all, from people asking me what I was going to do with my danes when I had my first child!!!! (noone asked me what I was going to do with my first human baby when I was expecting the sescone) to people looking at my dogs asking "do they live indoors" and when I say that they do, and mostly hog the bed and pillow too, they just shake their heads and look at me with petty, as if I am probably not totally well "put together up there". I guess we are a special breed :>) But since you are way too far away. I'll go ahead and ask people in NC and SC if they would like to have a get together in the summer.

I live in So.Cal but have a cabin and a daughter in No.Cal. It would be fun to get together.  Name a time and place and I'll try to do it!  Cowboy (newf) loves to play and we are hopefully picking up a Newf puppy (Chester) in a week.  He's had some trouble passing his heart test but the breeder assures me he'll pass at 10 weeks.  Fingers crossed!

We live in No.Cal. the real north near the Oregon border. My youngest son goes to school an lives in Sacramento. Have been planning a visit now that Donner pass should be clearing up although it snowed here yesterday. Would love to know the time and place and meet some of these great puppies and people I've been reading about. We have very few Giant Breeds up here. Mostly herding and hunting dogs. I think Sas and Seamus are 2 of the 4 St.s in Lassen County. Just have to say how much I love your web site. I was a member of a few St. groups but they were so political and got really nasty about breeding. The pictures are the best and the fact that these puppies all seem to be as spoiled as mine. I know about the "not put together to tight" My couch is disgusting with hair and doggie dirt on the arms from Sas's head and the fact that they sleep with me just horrifies some people lol. Oh well, they don't get the love I do from these babies. Thanks for the invite. connolly, (really Marifrances)
We are in Janesville, outside of Susanville about 1 1/2 hrs from Reno.

This could be great fun!  Our cabin is at Lake Almanor...so anyplace around that area this summer would be perfect!  Those of us that love our giants are a different breed (pun intended!) My family has offered to get me fitted with a straight-jacket because I take my Newf EVERYWHERE with me.  We meet the most interesting people that way! ;D

Yeah! Metting you & your dogs would be a real dream come true for all 3 of us (me, Michael & Bear). I also have a few people who would like to join in who are regular friends of us. Now...what summer month should we try for?
: Re: California get together
: Malishiku April 21, 2005, 07:56:01 PM
=(^ - ^ )= I live in Southern California too! Although, I'd love to one day own a Great Dane. This summer, probably in late July, I'm going to be getting my Dobermann puppy (is very excited)!

I think it would be pretty cool to get together. Early August would be best for me. June would be okay but I'll have school and no puppy! July, I'm going to Canada!

I'd love to meet everyone and their dogs!

Angel,
You are a very busy person with a dog and 5 human children. WOW! I'm thinking that because our state is so huge that we might have to split the playdate party into 2- one for S.CA and one for N.CA. What do you think?

: Lucy April 25, 2005, 04:29:32 PM
Hi there,
We're new as of today, but live in the So.Cal  North County area, and think the meeting is a  great idea. Is there a dog park that would accomodate them, allow them to run, and allow everyone to picnic/barbecue around? The Carlsbad area has a tiny plot of dirt that's fenced in, but another idea might be Dog Beach in Oceanside. Barbecue, and frolic for dogs & people? There's one in Del Mar also, but it's a bit more restrictive. The Oceanbeach area is more dog oriented then people oriented, while the Del Mar has specific off leash times...?

: Re: California get together
: ting1sf May 06, 2005, 01:14:41 PM
I am confused. Is it going to be a north Cali event or south Cali or both? Also when you guys say ocean beach is it sunset ocean beach in san francisco?   :)
: Re: California get together
: jabear May 06, 2005, 01:23:11 PM
Since the state is so large it would probably just be easier to have 2 seperate events unless we just want to pick one location and have people drive which is totally possible too. I've never heard of that beach in San Francisco but that sounds great! I've never been that far north with Bear so it's up to the No. Cal people to decide. I've been to several beaches in So. Cal so what ever the majority wants is cool too.
It's whatever and whereever you want to do. I just want to bring my husband and dog and have a blast with fellow members!
: Re: California get together
: newflvr May 06, 2005, 03:21:07 PM
Dog Beach in Huntington Beach is pretty easy to get to... also, Long Beach has a "dog beach" one Saturday a month, I think.  Dockweiller Beach (under the LAX flight path :() is another possibliity since the City Council is thinking of allowing dogs there...

: Newf Lover May 09, 2005, 09:34:00 AM
Ocean Beach in San Francisco is unfortunately not a dog friendly beach.  Right next to it is Fort Funston, which is basically another huge beach and it is where you can take your dog off leash.  It might be an ideal spot for the Nor Cal get together.  Not only could we have a big space for dogs to play, people could spend a day in one of the best cities in the World.  There's Golden Gate Park, Chrissy Field, the Embarcadero and so much more to do with your doggie.  Yes, I'm biased because I live in the Bay Area, but regardless of where the chosen spot is, there's going to be a lot of people who would have to drive several hours to attend.  SO, I'm thinking why not San Francisco?  It is an International destination and there's so much to do.  Imagine walking your Big Dog across the Golden Gate Bridge?  How cool would that be!  The view is going to be obstructed soon by a proposed suicide barrier and the bridge will not be the same, so it might be something people want to do before it changes.  Also, I saw there's a lot of non-Californians who would love to attend.  If it was at San Francisco, they could make a weekend trip out of it, maybe even go up to the Wine Country.  I grew up in Napa and I could be a good winery tour guide.  Just a thought, what do the rest of you think?

i'll have to attend the no cal and so cal events!

Hey Nickerbokker, if you really, really want to come you could rent a truck.  Hertz rents pickups for pretty good prices.  Although, you do live in Burbank so you might want to opt for the So Cal meeting.  The Hwy. 5 drive is nothing for me now, I have done it so many times that driving the 7-8 hoursit takes is nothing.  I'm going to do it in 2 weeks, Novato to Temecula, OUCH!  It's a straight shot for the most part so it's no big dea and I'll have Drake with mel.  We'll eat tons of Beef Jerky and load up on Mt. Dew - well, he won't drink that.  How scary, a Newf jacked up on Caffeine!

Hi, well Ft. Funston beach sounds great.  I would love to get out of the heat of Fresno for a day.  Are there any hotels or motels in the area that don't cost an arm and a paw  ???.

Oh yes, my daughter's fiancee is a captain, not a chief like I originally said and he works at Novato Station #1.  Yes, I bet a Novato fireman has a chusie job, however, he thinks it is like "Ladder 49" so I better not say anything.

I can't believe they are doing that to the bridge.  How stupid.  They will just find someplace else to jump and we will lose a national icon.  ughh

Hey CaliPyr, what dog park are you talking about?  Allston Park in Napa?  I'm not aware of any other parks in Napa.  That's an OK dog park, but it's a mess!  There's no grass so they have to play on dirt and wood chips which usually is no big deal unless you have a long haired dog.
: Re: California get together
: CalistogaPyr June 20, 2005, 12:14:11 PM
Yes, Allston is the park I was referring to. I don't think it's that bad...consider ing that there are few alternatives for contained play in our area.  I think that people have worked hard to make the park nice for everyone, and although Bo does get dirty while she's there, she always ends up having a good time & expending some of her excess puppy energy!  Are you from the area?  If you've got a suggestion for another park, I'd love to hear about it...I'm always up for a new dog park adventure!

I'm in Orange County and would love to participate in a get together.

I noticed that you were suggesting 1:00 PM on July 30th.

Might I make a suggestion:   Our big doggies would have a hard time handling the heat at that time of day.  Plus, if you are wanting to meet at Huntington Beach Dog Beach ... there would be absolutely NO PARKING that time of day.   I would suggest that the meeting be earlier or much later in the day.

Hope to meet you all soon. Barb and Samson

Great suggestion Barb, I think that later would be better since some people (like me) are going to be driving a ways to get there. How is 6-7?

Oh, and I am so glad that you are going to meet us there! Woohoo!!

<how's 6 or 7?>

That time would probably be MUCH better ... MUCH cooler anyway !!!
Provided that it works out for everyone else.

Noticed the San Diego people.  We live in Tierrasanta, anyone close?

We have a larger dog, but with small paws!
Looking for the right Great Dane, we would love to own one.

Northern CA BBQ- August 6, 2005 @ 7:00 p.m.- Fort Funston

Nick, I thought you were a advocate of a PG site!  Your asterix, pound, percent and dollar signs really offend me.  ;D  Look forward to the big meetup at Fort Funston.  The only issue that may arise is, believe it or not, it may be really cold, foggy and windy at 7 PM.  I know it's July and Summertime but this is San Francisco and you know what Mark Twain said about summers here.  Don't mean to throw a monkey wrench into things but I thought we were going to meet earlier in the day?  Just something to think about, I'll be there regardless of the time.

I wish I could go but I am up here in Canada. Although CA isn't that far from where I am. Anyone want to come up to Edmonton? How about a winter get togeather???? yeah don't think that will go over well huh?

Sheesh....I foeget about all of the other factors involved which why I need those of you who live in these meeting places to help! Remember that I live in the valley where my skin is melting off as I write this!  ;D

Okay.....for the Hunington BBQ the time stays at 7 and for the Fort Funston BBQ shall we keep it at 1???

Sorrr-eeey!  I don't mean to mess things up, I just thought it would be good to mention.  If it's foggy there, it's going to be like that all day. Darn Bay Area with all it's Micro-climates!  >:(  But it still might be better to meet a 1 PM, I'm all for that!  Anybody else?  Since I'm back from Fiji, I'll try to get any helpful info on the meeting place to make this as easy as possible for everybody attending.  ;D ;D ;D ;D

No problem at all and no need to apologize. I know it takes a while to get back "reality" after a vacation like you had!  ;D I just wish that I could remember to take all the x-factors into account. I forget!  ;) Whatever time, whatever the weather, however long we have to drive....we'll be there!

Hey I'm in Janesville outside of Susanville and go to Lake Almanor all the time, in fact I rented a cabin there last year so my son could go to work and still have a vacation. Was a little odd having a vacation only 40 minuets from home but I love the lake. Actually I get my hair cut there. It was 100 there today, my best friend works across from the golf course. Hope it cools off for you and the pups. My poor Saints are just dying. When are you coming up??? Connolly
feel free to email me!

We live in Simi Valley (Ventura County) and work in Burbank.
I am originally from the East Bay near SF so are up there alot too...

I would definitely love to meet all the nor-cal BPO'ers @ Fort Funston. I definitely agree that anytime after 5 is going to be a bit cold even for SF. 1:00 pm or earlier would definitely be awesome.
