did they grow on you...I have always loved and admired them and when my husband asked me to marry him, I replied with 'Can I have a big dog?'  Now I have 2 LOL

I've always loved big dogs. When I was little, I was bitten by a mid-size bulldog of some sort (I was 5, so the memory is a little hazy.) and I've been bitten by countless "small-fry" since. I try to be very cautious when dealing with them, as their moods seem to change faster than the wind. Their body launguage is harder to read, so I prefer the bigger guys, who "telegraph" their intentions a little better.

My brother has a demented little Mojo/Boston Terrier cross that is a complete spaz. He'll come over to you and beg for attention, then when you start petting him, he'll lick you for a minute or so, and then bite you....HARD.

Freaking spaz. *lol*

I have always loved big dogs!! We had lots of dogs growing up. Mostly mixes of labs, a shiba inu (fostered for a short time) and pekingeses. My neighbor growing up had a littled terrier thing and it bit me on the ankle. Some of my friends had little dogs that were always hyper and I couldn't stand them. I LOVE big mellow dogs! We had one dog that I was very attached to Samantha Jo. I'll make post for her on the rainbow bridge.

You know I dont' remember when I got attached to big dogs.  My family never had a dog until I was in the seventh grade.  My grandparents had dogs, but they were mid sized collie/shepherd crosses mostly.

My favorite breeds used to be the cocker spaniel (lady and the tramp), the scottish terrier, and the west highland white terrier.  This is of course back when I was like ages 5-10.  I think the giant breed dogs took awhile for me to warm up to simply b/c it was ingrained into me that they were "too big" and would eat too much and take up too much room.

So I would have to say they started really growing on me in the last 5 or so years.  I've always loved all dogs, but simply didn't think I would ever have the resources to handle a big dog.  I know better now, and wouldn't have it any other way.   :D  Now, I don't think I will ever live long enough to get all the breeds I want........lo l

Actually, I was never much of an animal person at all before Bear. I loved real bears and always wanted one though my paretns were very against that.  ;D I grew up with horses and dogs and cats but didn't really care for them. Then one day I spotted a Newf. It was love at first site. Bear was my wedding present from Michael and I can't imagine my life without a big ol' slobbery teddy bear ever again.

I've just always loved dogs!!  My husband was the one that wanted the mastiff and now I can't imagine life without a big dog.  Previously, we had two lab mixes and I grew up with a border collie mix.  Does everyone get tired of the "They must eat a lot!" comment? LOL

Hi all!  I've wanted a big dog since I was little, a cane corso especially. One day when I move to a nice house I plan on adding to my crew (two chis and one English Bulldog) several big dogs. I've looked into everything! Neos, corsos, Berners, great danes....the list goes on! ;D

Definately!! I get asked that all the time. Sometimes it makes me want to scream! Pyrs have a slow metabolism, so they don't eat much. I just remember I'm an ambassador to the breed and want people to realize that big dogs are calm and gentle.

I don't know why people assume that just because a dog is a large breed that it means they eat a bunch!  Our mastiff sometimes skips a meal and it doesn't seem to be a problem.   Our babies are couch potatoes so they shouldn't eat much.  :D  Well...the great dane hasn't reached couch potato status yet, but he will one day!  I HOPE! ;)

I had never had any kind of pet growing up.  My parent's were dead set against having any kind of animal in the house.  I've never had a good experience with bigger dogs when I was younger (got bitten by a lab, and many other numerous experiences with big snarling dogs).  So when I was 18 I moved out and had a few cats. lol  Then when I was 19 my boyfriend decided he needed a Husky.  I wasn't thrilled with the idea but she grew on me then decided to run away.  :'(  I vowed I'd never get a big dog again.(Yeah right!) When my daughter was 2 her great aunt bought her a Maltese, and I thought "Oh how adorable this is gonna be great!" YEAH RIGHT!  That dog bites and snarls and is more vicious than any big dog I've ever encountered!

Well I happend to go into the Animal Shelter one day and I saw the most gorgeous big dog EVER! She was a dane mix, but looked all dane to me!  I wanted her sooooo bad, but I had never done any type of research on the breed.  So I went home that day and started gathering info on the breed and the rest is history.  Since that day I've been infatuated with the giant breed dogs, and the ones I've met since have all be angels!  So I've flipped flopped my thoughts on never wanting a big dog, and now I vow to never ever have another small dog again!  :D

I have always loved big dogs. Growing up we always had 3 to 5 dogs living in the house. They were mostly medium size mutts. My first big dog was a Pyr mix, Then I got a Pyr, that was back in 1981.  Now I have an assortment of dogs. 2 Siberians, 2 Coonhounds, a Pointer X and now a Rottie pup.

I was raised around all types of animals. I learned to ride my pony before I even learned to ride a bike. We had a Newf/ Irish Setter cross up until I was 5. We always had a dog in the house, but never as big as him. After him we rescued an Irish Setter, when she passed we had a lab mix and a cocker spaniel. I always wanted to have another giant in my home, but the timing just wasn't right. When we found Hutch I had to do some serious convincing that we had enough room for a dog of that size. Now I always grin when I hear Derek say 'He's not big, every other dog is just really small!'. We will never again be without a big drooling, shedding monster!

I was raised with a small-medium dog beagle-terrier mix. Yes, only one. By the time she passed away at 19 years old I was married and out of the house. I always wanted a doberman, and once we got our house, I got two...then they weren't big enough and I wanted a change so I branched into danes

I grew up with assorted small dogs. My main preference was long hair! After I married, I was researching "family" dogs, found newfoundlands, and was hooked.  We also have a golden retriever, just over 100 pounds, heart of gold.  (he just isn't a newfie)

It's always been Danes and Irish Wolfhounds.  Later, when I knew a breeder, it was Borzois.
Growing up we had a 35lb terrier mix who got nasty when he got old, and had to be PTS.  Then we were supposed to get a Peke, but that fell through and my mom got a Golden Retriever.  Brandy and I just never bonded, I don't really like insanely "happy" dogs.  Brandy had an undiagnosed heart defect and died after just a few years, then Gigolo came and said he belonged to us. He was a mix- one of those short haired "yellow dogs" with a mole on his muzzle.  He died of kidney failure two years later (another undiagnosed defect).  By then I was 17 and had a good job, I started looking at Dane breeders and my mom bought a Keeshond to keep me from bringing home a Dane.
THAT dog was a disaster from the first, he was a pet store puppy mill dog and was just never "right" in the head.  He got to go live on my aunt's acreage and run wild until he died at a ripe old age.
As soon as I was out of my parent's house I adopted a Dane puppy, and it's been Danes and giant breed mixes ever since.
I had a horse when I was a kid, too.  My mom says the big dogs are just compensating for not being able to afford a horse- if she knew what I spent on the dogs she'd know I could probably afford TWO horses!

Growing up I had a variety of dogs. Beagles, Llhasas, Dobermans, and then my mom raised St Brenards. Living on a farm we also had livestock and of course ponies and then quarter horses. When Randy and I got married we decided to purchase a St Bernard for our son Tyler. "Big Clyde" was great for or toddler to grow up with. They were best buds. Where you saw Ty you saw Clyde laying near by keeping a close eye on him. I have it on video the both of them playing in the sand box making roads for the tonka trucks. And in the hot summer months in the pool together. Nothing like a big drool in the pool. After Clyde passed this summer after 10 years of devotion to our family we decided to get Gretchen out rottie. Gretchen is little sister to Buttons (llhasa) and Macie ( not sure what she is). But I must say I am very partial to my big dogs..

Well....

I've always loved dogs. My mom was one of those psycho NO PETS people. She hates dirt and hair. But, for some reason, she let me get a puppy when I tured 7. So, Millie was my first dog. WAIT NO! My first dog was a German Shepherd Dog that I had when I was a baby. But, someone stole him. I don't remember him at all....anyway. ..hahaha....Mi llie was some sort of beagle mix. She was about 40 pounds. She was always a bit psycho, and when my parents got divorced, she tried to bite my step-mom (I don't blame her at all) and my dad put her down.

Anyway...I can't remember when I fell in love with big dogs. I've wanted a Mastiff ever since I can remember. Its funny, Babs that you said that about asking for a big dog when you got married. That's what I've always told my boyfriend. "I won't marry you until I can get a big dog" Of course, he's always agreed...but not until I graduate college and we buy a house.

I fell in love with Newfs when I read Rhoda Lerman's book, "In the Company of Newfies." My dog is a Newf mix, and he is one in a million, but I just thought that was him. Rhoda's book cemented the fact that its a Newf temperment that makes him so special.

But then I'm drawn to the Newfoundland for these same qualities.
And then the Rottweiller!
And then GSD's.
And then...

I've always been a "Bigger is Better" girl.  When I was 2 I used to run away and play with the Dane next door.   (I used to run away alot when I was little).  However my mom was terrified of Danes and my little sister got knocked on her butt by a Dobe puppy (7 months) when she was little so she was scared of anything bigger than a lint ball.  I always loved the big boys though and was ecstatic when a new riding instructor I started going to bred Danes.  (I now know she was a BYB but it was a happy memory and I choose not to taint it).  Pretty much as soon as I could I got my big dog.  And I never want to be without one again.

please try and stay away from 'teacup breeds'  they aren to standard and very fraglie and loaded with health problems due to their extreme small size...their legs can actually break from walking and their mouths are so small their teeth can grow and develop properly etc..

Always loved animals and BIG DOGS in particular!  My first big dog as a teenager (we'd had a collie and a cairn terrior) was a giant schnauzer - Grady Wayne.  Ha!  My best friend named him that.  He just showed up on our doorstep and noone claimed him after running an add in the paper and at the local vets.  So he was mine and he lived only 4 more years.  He had a heat stroke when he was about 8 years old (vet approximation) when my mom left him out one day instead of letting him back inside.  It wasn't even a HOT day, but he'd drunk his water almost dry by the time I got home.  We took him to the vet, was told he'd had a heat stroke and then as we were getting him treated, he died of a heart attack in my arms.  LOVED HIM and STILL miss him.  He slept on the bed w/me (after mom went to bed that is.)  As soon as he heard her door shut, he'd jump on my bed.

i've always loved big dogs!
I grew up with a Great Pryanese/Springer Spaniel, Princess, (accidental breeding).
And when I was 6, I remember my mom brought home a brindle Dane.

But Sheba (the dane) had some problems, she got very sick when she came into her first heat. So sick that it took both parents to pick her up and put her in our van to take her to the vet. I don't remember what it was from but I know we had to get her fixed right after she was better.

She also had a few screws loose and became a little too over protective of our new home (we moved to oregon when I was almost 8 ). Got in a fight with the dog acrossed the street and didn't make it home from the trip to the vets:(

A couple years later my mom brought home a huge 8 week old Mastiff/golden retriever cross (monstro). He was the best most kind hearted lug ever. All he ever wanted anyone to do was throw his tennis ball (he could fit 3 into his mouth at once and all you'd ever see was the first one.

We had to have Princess put down when I was in the 8th grade about a 1 1/2 yrs after Monstro came along.

We lost him at about 5 yrs, poor fella had an enlarged heart and he was on medication. He also leg problems:(

My dad ended up getting a husky/shepard (Tikaani), when Monstro was just a few years old, and we still have him today...He's a little confused though, he seems to be head over heals for my moms furry leech (wickett, our pug/norwich cross).

Currently there are 5 mutts in the house. Tikaani, Arisha (dog in my avatar, husky/malamute). 3 furry leeches, Wickett, Marty (scottie, westie) and Fizzgig (pug, norwich, scottie, westie, Wickett and Marty's pup). oh and 5 baby leeches. but they'll be gone in a few weeks.

I've also grown up with and currently own 2 horses.

ooh by the way, HI EVERYONE! I'm a newbie.

I plan on getting a Great Dane of my own once I'm moved out and I relocate (hopefully next spring).

I think out of all the sizes, I've fallen in love with the giants dispositions the best.

The only one of our 3 leeches that I like is Fizzgig.

When I was a kid, all we ever had were small to teeny mutt dogs. My family didn’t go for big dogs until one specific, amazing girl named Nicki. By all rights, she should have been one of those nightmare dogs who kill someone, but she was the dearest love of my childhood. Not just mine—every kid in the neighborhood.  This is a long story, but Nicki deserves it.

I grew up in a small town. When I was 9, this guy nobody knew moved into the rabbit hutch house a couple lots down, at the end of our alley. He had what all us kids thought at first was a wolf—she was mostly German shepherd, but there was something else there too, because she was really big—I couldn’t even reach over her at first, her back was taller than my armpit! He kept her on a tractor chain fastened around the big elm tree in the middle of his yard, where her sofa crate doghouse was perched. Every day as we walked to and from school, she would rush out to the end of the chain, bark, snarl, rear up, and just generally raise h*ll. We were TERRIFIED of this thing—it seemed like she was as big as the house!

So a few weeks go by like this, with us avoiding the yard, walking all the way around the block, rather than down the alley to avoid this creature. And one day I’m heading home late because I went to my friend Cindy’s to watch the After School Special, when I come around the corner of my block and run smack into the monster.

She was off the chain.

I didn’t know whether to freeze or pee my pants. Then she started walking toward me. So I started backing up. And I kept backing up, around in a circle in the middle of the street, down the sidewalk to the alley, down the alley and thru the hole in our fence where the board was missing, into my back yard. She followed me the whole way—head not really down, but kind of off sides, tail up but not wagging, very deliberately not walking any faster than I was, but not backing off an inch either, keeping real close eye contact with me. I remember thinking that I knew how rabbits felt. Finally, I’m standing there in my yard with this dog that’s more than twice the size of me when I realize that I can’t get OUT of the yard without turning my back on her to reach the gate latch on the other side of the gate..

So I do what all 9 year old girls should do when they’re in trouble. I start screaming, “Daddy, help!”

Dad came running, and as he came thru the gate, Nicki just fell over on the ground, crying. I’m think Dad suspected then what I found out the hard way a little later.

But he told me to go get the piece of chain we put Katydog on when we took her camping with us and to open a can of dog food. When I came back, he put the chain on her collar, and fastened it around the clothes pole so she couldn’t get out of the yard. She was sniffing at the can of food; but she wasn’t trying to eat it.  It was like she didn’t know what it was.

So I scooped some out with my fingers and let her lick it off them.

I fell in love that instant, with her big hot tongue sliding over my fingers, her bony shoulder knocking me over. I had to sit down right there between her feet to feed her the rest of the can. She was big and solid, and snuggly feeling, even though I could feel her bones a lot more than I could our little Katydog. I thought it was just because she was big that I could feel them. I was heartbroken when Dad took her back. The guy wasn’t there, so Dad just put her back on that chain around the tree and gave her some water from the hose.

A couple of days later, we were all walking home from school, and she was off the chain again. Everyone screamed and ran except me—I just stood there and she came right to me and licked my fingers. Not being stupid, I knew what that meant. So I put my hand thru her collar and took her home, and fed her a couple of cans of food, just like she’d asked. (She loved that—licking canned food off your fingers. She didn’t ever want to take kibble or treats from anyone’s hand, but she loved to lick canned food off fingers. Sometimes, she would have eaten a whole bowlful of kibble, but she’d lick your fingers, asking for canned food. I think it meant trust to her.)

This went on for a couple of weeks or so—she’d meet us at corner, off the chain, and come home to be fed. The other kids got over their nerves pretty quickly when I didn’t get eaten alive. She would come in the yard and we’d take turns feeding her, petting her, playing with her—I even stole one of Mom’s good hairbrushes to brush her with. (Yes, I got my @ss beaten.) Then Dad would get home, and he’d take her home and put her back on that chain. “She’s his dog.” he’d say.

It made me furious. I figured, she gets loose because she wants to be with me, I’m feeding her, she’s MINE. I yelled at Dad a lot in this vein.

Then one day, a group of us were walking home and we heard this horrible thumping sound and a weird screaming sound. It kept getting closer and closer, until we turned the corner, and we saw it.

The guy had a piece of board—I think it must have been 1 x 2, for a fence or a porch railing or something, there was a bunch in the yard—and he was beating Nicki with this thing. She was the one who was screaming.

When I was a kid, I had absolutely NO control over my temper, which was infamously bad—I was constantly getting into fights. I don’t even remember picking it up, just the shock of the impact in my arms and shoulders and the stinging in my hands from whacking him across the back with another of the boards lying around. I do have a very clear memory of standing there, holding it like a baseball bat, getting ready to hit him some more, with him cursing at me and threatening to beat the s*** out of me.

My mom showed up in the middle of this standoff. My little brother had gone running for her when I went after the board. She claims that what she heard me say to him was that if he hit Nicki one more time, I would knock his f***ing brains out his f***ing ears.

Granddad used to say that, so she probably heard right. I just remember the board in my hands, hearing the blood beat in my ears and feeling like I was in an oven I was so hot. I can only think of one time I’ve ever gotten that mad again. That mindless rage is really quite an astonishing experience, and not in a good way.

When Mom came, it was like someone turned a switch, and I could hear kids crying and sirens. Cindy had run home crying too, and somehow her mother got that the guy was beating ME with a board, so she called the cops before she came running, thank god. When they got there a few minutes after Mom, they found both the guy and me with the boards still in hand, all of us screaming at the top of our lungs, Mom with a butcher knife, and Nicki bleeding on the ground. She had some broken teeth, a dislocated shoulder, needed a lot of stitches, and had to be taken to the vet in the ambulance.  It was horrible.

After a LOT of wrangling over the next couple of days, it was finally agreed that nobody (including me, who should have been in juvie!) would be arrested if the vet were paid in full, and Nicki were properly licensed, spayed and given all her shots at her owners expense; but if she got off her chain again, whoever took her in would be responsible for her—I remember sitting in the sheriff’s office with the guy yelling that we were ruining his training , if he couldn’t teach his dog, he wasn’t responsible if she hurt someone and me screaming that the only person she was going to hurt was him because he was an a****le. It wasn’t a pretty scene, and I think the only reason it ended up the way it did was because so many kids had seen the whole thing, and everyone on the block was up in arms.

She ended up being a ‘neighborhood’ dog, because all of us kids wanted her for our own. She rarely slept in the same house two nights running—there was a constant competition to get her to come home with YOU for the night, and I only won about 1 night out of every 3 or 4, probably because my stupid mom wouldn’t let her sleep in the bedroom, and other moms would. Every house for blocks around had extra bowls outside for her—she wouldn’t eat or drink inside a house for some reason, no matter how cold it was. The garage was OK, if there was a door open—if not, she’d do without. She did come to my yard after school pretty exclusively, and I started making kids bring a can of food over if they wanted to come in the yard to play with her, and I saved them in a special cabinet in the garage so they didn’t get mixed up with what Mom bought for the little dogs, next to the kibble that Dad bought for her when Mom wasn’t looking. Every once in a while at first, the guy would catch her and chain her up, but she’d just get loose. Nobody ever figured out her trick, and finally he just gave up and left her alone.

She gained a LOT of weight, and was absolutely the alpha of every dog in every yard on the whole north side of Main Street, and there were only one challenger on the other side of town—a big Malamute named Chuckles that would get ALL upset when we walked past that yard on the way to the pool. I don’t think he could have taken her if he’d ever gotten out, but he certainly thought he could. I think Chuckles was a he. Nicky would just taunt him, because she was loose, with a bunch of kids to play with—and he never had more than a couple of kids in his yard. Also, Nicky got to swim in the real paddling pool.  I’m sure she knew all he had was a plastic one in the yard.

She’d show up at school and lay on the steps until recess or lunch time, and a hundred kids would come piling out to pet her. She wouldn’t let any of us cross any street alone, only in groups—she’d go nuts, barking and howling, and come running to stop you. Once Callie was late for school, and was walking up to the crosswalk where the guard was by herself when Nicki came out of nowhere, put her nose in Callie’s stomach, pushed her down and held her down with her front feet until a some of us left the school, and went over there to walk back to school with her! When the rodeo or the fair came to town, she’d be down at the fairgrounds almost all the time. More than once I saw her herd a kid away from the corrals and chutes or the livestock barns. I can’t imagine where she learned that cows and horses were dangerous, but she didn’t let kids get anywhere near them if she could help it. Maybe she just didn’t trust anything that was bigger than she was.

She adored kids—any kid, from a baby barely crawling on up could do anything with her or to her—but didn’t really trust adults too much. I don’t know if that would have changed as we all grew up. She’d lay down and let parents or one of the teachers pet her back a little or shake her hand, but only if there were kids around. My grandmother was the one exception to that—she would lay across Gran’s lap forever and let her brush her and trim out the foxtails and the teeny knots in her coat with her nail scissors.

She lived for 5 years after that first day she was loose—she just didn’t wake up one winter morning. The first bad crack in my heart happened when Kim came crying to my door to tell me.

She wasn’t anyone’s version conventional, well-trained pet dog, but I don’t think any dog was ever loved more. And none of us who loved her ever talks about their dogs without saying, “Remember the time Nicki…?”

Thank you.  It was hard to write, 'cause I still miss her every day.

Sometime remind me to tell you about her and Jish, the boxer bitch that lived across the alley from me....

I grew up with Airedales but I didn't consider them "big dogs".  My wife grew up with Golden Retrievers and felt the same way too.  So when it came to deciding on what kind of dog to get, we looked in a dog book and discovered Newfs!  I had heard about them before but not much, nor did I ever see one.  They aren't too common here in California, which is weird because it is a great place for them.  Makes Drake that much more special I guess.   But, if we didn't necessarily love Big dogs before, we sure do now! Especially Newfs!

I've always loved big dogs. But growing up we always had cat's, my mom wasn't a dog fan ( she has since changed her mind). My dad always had big dogs growing up and would always tell us stories about them. And same with my husband. So I guess that is where the love of big dogs comes from, and I love them because they are so gentle.
