: Things your Pup's afraid of?
: Spook October 04, 2005, 10:13:53 AM
Was just wondering the silly things your dogs are afraid of? My Pyrenees Freyr is afraid of Garbage bags, the vaccum, my cat Koby and pumpkins. If he see's a pumpkin he stand about 10 feet from it and barks to try and scare it off. If that doesn't work he then goes and tries to hide under the coffee table that he doesn't fit under anymore and then gets stuck. My Pyrenees Damia is afraid of the dark,  the vaccum,  the squeaky frog doggy toy. Serenity our Fila isn't really afraid of much of anything  once we let her sniff it.. 'cept really loud unexpected noises. If she hears something go bang (dish being dropped for instance) she'll run and try and crawl into your lap. Only she knows that she's not supose to be in your lap so she'll try and do it without putting any paws on you.

How old are your dogs...I feel LGD have more fear periods...The key if they get spooked how fast to they recover...some thing would spook zero or misha within a second they were back to normal...

Zero doest get spooked anymore and Misha very little...

I also do weird things, like feed my dogs on legos or weird surfaces and always try to build up confidence...M y CO though she is already full of confidence that she is border line cocky

I need to work on confidence for Sugar Bear so I let him win a few games of tug-of-war tonight.  He just pranced around like he was "king of the hill".  He played with Dixie a few times but she would not let him win so he would bring the toy back for me to play with him.  Sugar Bear is very scared of fireworks.  Dixie is not scared of anything, which has me worried.  She will hear something and she runs to it like mad.

Yes work on his confidence...t ug is good...OB with big praise...i sit in train stations, elevators, pet stores, hotels, long car rides, loud music, sheetmetal shops, gun clubs, machine shops, bottles 1/4 filled with pebbles to play catch with etc....

Have the dog walk over some funny surfaces like tin foil etc...open umbrellas around them

Another thing is use your female on walks to set the pace and they can pick up from the other dog...

Great ideas, maybe we can come up with some fun games.  I am afraid I made him a little too much of a Mommy's  boy.

Zoey is afraid of all sorts of weird things, especially at night. When we go out for night time potty breaks and she sees lights, big holiday decorations, strollers, etc, they always freak her out at night (but not usually in the day).... She's funny, because she is terrified by the broom, but thinks the vacuum is fun.... Most things she is just kind of afraid of, but she has three huge fears in life: nail clippers, ear cleaning solution, and baby gates. The first two are such a drama because i have tried to train her not to be afraid of them but she isn't budging, so grooming time is stressful for both of us... the last one, well that's a fear I am actually very happy she has. if we don't want her to go somewhere, all we have to do is put a babygate there and she will stay away; we don't even set it up for real, just lean it against the wall and she has total respect for it because she is so terrified of it for some reason. if we pick it up, she scurries across the room.

For ear cleaning...I got much better results by  holding the container of the solution in some warm water and then squirting on to the cottonball instead of directly into the ear...and cleaning the ear with the cottonball soaked into the solution

I think the cold wet squirt is what erks them...zero is much calmer and no longer runs when I am cleaning the ears

Hahahaha...fun ny topic. The only thing Bear is really scared of is things coming at him like something falling on him or things jumping out at him from the bushes or from behind a building. I love to play hide and seek with him and it cracks me up when I can scare him. He is always so relieved when he finds out that it is me and not a scary monster.

Tonka is afraid of garbage bags and the vacuum too.  He is also freaked out by shopping carts (at petsmart) and suitcases  ::) oh and pots and pans.  The best one though.....he is afraid of knocking on the door or the doorbell (the jack russel and the poodle go nuts barking and Tonka is trying to find a place to hide!)  It makes me feel so safe hehe....aww, but its okay, I will protect my giant puppy! :P

LMAO!...On Legos?...That's a great idea except I am sure Sam would eat the Legos too!....My dogs both are afraid of the vaccum & Sam is finally getting over his fear of anything with a long handle & anything with wheels...He ain't crazy about hats either but is getting better.

Kiah used to be afraid of unfamilar noises, but now that she's older she's a lot better. Once she's used to hearing noises then she's okay. If it's nothing she's heard before she'll run and hide. Lately she's been going to investigate instead of running. This makes me happy.

Cowboy is scared of things that make NO sense!  He just freaked out because he knocked a chair over on himself as he was trying to get up.  He got tangled in the legs and acted as if the legs were trying to get him.  He looked so worried!!!  Chester seems pretty calm about everything so far....

Just make it fun...throw some pumpkins in the yard or BIG tree branches...huc k bottles filled a little bit with rocks...open umbrellas

if you seem to be having fun with it, they will too

I also throw treats in the yard and make them use their noses to find them...like  a handful of cookies broken up and just throw them real high in the air LOL

I'm already doing some of that stuff...I open umbrellas close to them...Samson used to try & eat them...Now he hardly reacts at all except to shoot me a look like "is that all you've got"?...lol!...Pumpkins in the yard?...No problem!...This is my FAVORITE time of year...My yard is filled with pumpkins, masks nailed to trees, orange lights, scarecrows, & the like...I love Halloween the best because it is so much fun & you don't have to have family over for dinner or buy anyone presents! :D

: Roxy Poxy October 05, 2005, 12:44:41 AM
Hula Hoops!  We bought Roxy a cool purple hula hoop last year, thinking we could teach her to jump through hoops.  HA Fat Chance!  We started by letting her sniff it on the ground... I don't think you can get a good whiff of anything if you don't get closer than 6 feet to it, but then again maybe Roxy can.  Then we held it up (the bottom of the hoop touching the floor) so Roxy could easily walk through it.  she walked around it.  Hmph, so far we aren't having anyluck.  So I tell my fiancee to get on his hands and knees and for him to crawl through the hoop, then I'll give him a "treat" and hopefully Roxy will follow.  She looked at him like he was crazy.  Ok, this entire time we have been filming. and it's been nothing but sweet words and and fun times... but no Roxy through the hoop.  It's funny to hear myself on the video, but I was getting a wee bit frustruated at this point.  We prop the hoop between the edge of the couch and some chairs.  If she wants to come into the living room with us, she has to go through this hoop; there is no other way around it.  Oh yeah, did I mention we have practically an entire bag of pig ears spread out on the floor (on the other side of the hoop, if she ever crosses over).  Well she starts to whine and whimper and cry and bark these pathetic little barks.  I am usually the first one to stop everything and go to console my little baby, but I had about had it with this circus!

I say to Nick "Well, we can see that YOUR daughter isn't much of a risk taker, is she?"   Then I blurt out "What is her problem?!  It's NOT like I'm asking her to jump through a hoop of flames!"  The one liners get better from there!!  So, Nick and I are still on one side of the hoop and Roxy on the other.  We ask her if she wants to go for a walk.  She goes crazy and really wants to go.  We place the video camera on the table and focus it on the hoop.  We decide to hide from Roxy and say "Bye, we're going for a walk. Come Roxy"  we wait, but we can't see her (cause we are hiding by the door) then we open the door and close it so she thinks we have left.  She starts to bark and whiper abd whine.  It's funny because the camera catches her looking for ways to get around that darn hoop!  She attempts to crawl up and over the couch and it looks like she contemplates a way of getting underneath the diningroom chairs!  The look on her face when she thinks we have left for a walk without her is priceless!!  I guess we're mean, but it sure was funny!  She still isn't a fan of the hula hoop...allthou gh, I must say that it is a fabulous ab workout!

I won't get started about Roxy's fears of the kiddie pool, our regular pool, the shower, candles that smell, cats and little dogs.  Sometimes when she gets up or turns around, she'll knock things over with that big butt of hers, and it scares the crap out of her!

I don't know why I always have to have a long story.  I can never keep it to a one sentence post!  Sorry!

Steph and Roxy!

Lady and Grace hate gun shot sounds from the woods behind us.
Grace hates the Swiffer and niether of them like the vaccuum.
Grace...due to her habit of digging in the garbage...hate s when the trash can tips and rattles.

I wouldn't say that Sanity is scared anymore as much as cautious to an unhealthy extent.  Anything that he avoids I go out of my way to expose him to it, after which he's fine.  Well he's scared of ankle biter dogs, but who can blame him?

Merlin is deathly afraid fo the dog gate. He will not even be in the same room with it volentarily. Strider is terrified of rabbits. Cute little bunnies make him shake so hard it looks like a grande mal seizure. Raven is afraid of any loud noise, fire crackers, thunder or gunshots. But I think her hearing is diminishing, so she sleeps through more now.
