: Need Advice... Worried about Riley
: SwissysRock October 17, 2005, 01:08:36 AM
Hey everyone, I need some advice.  Before Riley, I've never owned a dog, so I don't know if this is normal or not.  A couple of weeks ago, we were sitting in the living room and Riley was on the floor next to us.  All of the sudden, we noticed he started licking his nose... excessively and would not stop.  Next thing we know, he is licking the floor/carpet like crazy.  Almost felt like he was trying to swallow or something.  He just kept sticking his tongue out and licking his nose non-stop.  I tried giving him some water, but this didn't really help.  He did this for like 5-10 minutes then stopped.  That was the last of it, so I wasn't worried BUT he did this again a few days ago.  And now its been 3 nights in a row and I'm freaking out.  What could this be?  Should I call a vet???  :'(

OMG!!  Koby's done that too before!  I'm not going to be of any help, but I'm curious to know if this is normal or not too.  I've never really thought about it as being a health issue, I just thought Koby was being a dork.  UH OH now I'm kind of scared! He's only done it a couple of times and I've had him for about a yr, but now I'm curious to know if it's something serious. :-\

Missy was an obessive nose-licker too.  I never had a problem with her because of it.  It just drove me nuts!

Gunther does this as well, and it drives me nuts.  He will stop when I look at him b/c he knows I dont' like it, but as soon as I turn my head, I can hear the slurping noises again.  (sorry slurping noises drive me up the wall).  He started doing this right before he got a cold, and has been doing it off and on ever since.  I've always contributed it to nasal discharge or post nasal drip, but I don't know if that is what it is or not.

Keiko did this too when she first got allergies, which is why I thought the same for Gunther with the post nasal thing.

Pippin licks the  tile floor in the basement like that...The first time he did it he had just come in from outside & I thought he was crazy from thirst...So, I gave him water but he didn't want it...He just wanted to lick the floor.

Harley, doesn't lick her nose she just licks the carpet, and the starts to chew it. Drives me crazy. Not sure why she does it.

I don't know much about swissy's, but I've known of many berners who have what are called Fly-biting Seizures.  I don't want you to worry more, but since they are closely related I figure that its something that you should check out.  Here's a link with a quick video clip of a berner having an episode.

Can he be distracted?  Does he seem confused?  Is after moments of stress or right before sleeping?

Depending on the severity sometimes medication is required.  Tenchi has grand mal seizures, but they seem to come in patterns, once a day for three days then no more for about 6 months.  Since his are so far apart, we have chosen not to medicate him so far.

Like I said, its probably NOT this, but something that you should check into just in case.  Good luck with Riley!   :-[
